I held off on ordering cushions for our banquette. Now that we have them I think… WHY?! I should have ordered the cushions as soon as we started building the banquette! Now that we have the cushions it is basically like we have another sofa in our home. Honestly in a small house we maximize every square inch and another place to hang out is gold to us! I shared some other options for cushions for banquettes and window seats below! Because every home needs more cozy spots to curl up!
I shared all my tips on building our banquette on THIS post. If you are building a banquette and know you want to do cushions then make sure to add in the cushion height. Compare the banquette height with the added cushion height to your dining chairs. That will give you a good idea on how tall to build the banquette.
I personally love the French mattress cushion look. Don’t you? I get asked all the time how we keep them clean. Honestly my kids are really respectful of our home and perfect angels. HA! Just kidding. But they are really good with not sitting on the cushions when they eat. The two chairs are where the girls sit most nights and Finn still sits in his highchair. Kevin and I sit on the “throne” obviously:) Just how we have sat, and I would’t mind and don’t mind when they eat on the banquette cushions, we can always have them cleaned. But you could have them sprayed with a Scotch Guard. The cushion for our window seat has gotten dirty and I just spot clean it.
I shared where I had our cushions made at the end of the post. I went with a linen fabric. Having a custom cushion can be pricey, but I felt it was worth the money for how often we sit here. I can’t remember the exact price (I did get a designer discount) but the initial quote was between $500-$600. It is 2.5″ heigh. They said that they don’t recommend having a wool filled cushions less than 2.5″ high, just because wool does compress a little bit in the firsts months with regular use.
One or all of my kids are typically snuggled here reading or doing homework while we are working on dinner.
We used THIS cushion in our window seat upstairs. We made sure to build it around that cushion measurement, especially since it was close in size.
The cushion I found for our window seat was actually off of an ottoman I had. Lucky fit! But it is similar to the one above.
I get asked all of the time where we had our custom cushions made, I know it is not as easy as it should be to find bench cushions. I did some research and shared some great, affordable online sources for you…

Hope that helps with your bench cushion needs! And you can find the post about how we built our banquette HERE.
This was a great post. I have one bench in my kitchen I’d love to have a cushion for but they are SO expensive. And some you have to order from another country and that makes me nervous. I’m totally looking into the options you suggested. Thank you!
oh good! Hope it helps and you find one!!
We just built a banquette in our kitchen and it desperately needs cushions. I am just terrified of having to spend SO MUCH because they are a little off from the standard sizes. Go figure!
oh fun! Yes, I hope that helps!
I absolutely love your banquette! Been meaning to have one made for years but obviously lack the motivation. Do you have any photos of the banquette without the cushions please? I like the simple back which makes the whole thing look more finished. I live in Greece and banquettes aren’t generally a thing here.
thanks! You can find the details on the banquette Here- http://nestingwithgrace.com/built-in-banquette-in-our-kitchen/
Where is that kitchen table from? Must have!
The marble is an antique find. But the table base (that is actually a table) here- http://nestingwithgrace.com/shop-our-home/
