We were overdue for some new bedding. I had a white linen duvet on our bed that Kevin had given to me as a Birthday gift 8 years ago! He knew I really wanted it and that I was nervous about spending a lot of money on bedding. He surprised me with it along with a little scavenger hunt he set up because he was out of town for work. I learned a good lesson from that bedding…and that Kevin is a keeper:)! If you spend the money on quality and timeless bedding you will love it for years and it will last for years. Linen bedding is actually TWICE as durable as cotton bedding! I have had a couple other cotton duvet covers and none of them I loved as much as the linen. I kept putting it back on! Our duvet recently started to rip, after 8 years by the buttons and most of the buttons were off. When Serena & Lily reached out to me to see if I wanted to partner again I knew I wanted to feature their gorgeous bedding. And it gave me the perfect chance to show you how to make your bedding look extra fluffy and don’t miss the video at the end!
First highly recommend starting with a Design Board before you start any design project including a plan for bedding! We have had THIS Upholstered Bed the bedding needed to coordinate with the warmer tones and also the gray tones on our dark walls. Creating the design board I could layer the bedding with the bed and visualize what it would look like! This really helped so much and keeps you from wasting time and making a choice you don’t love. (See how to make a design board via your phone HERE).

Bedding Reveal-
What do you think?! Looks like the Design Plan doesn’t it? I can’t even tell you how much I love this look. I feel like it is me and that is what you want your home to be- you. I kept in mind the color of the bed and I went with a THIS White Quilt because I knew it would be right up against the tan bed. Also a white quilt is a staple that you won’t get tired of. THIS White Quilt is so light weight and soft. We had a white quilt before and it was so heavy, Kevin said he was glad to get it off the bed (funny he didn’t mention this before).
Let’s break down the tips and tricks I have for you!
The #1 Trick to Fluffy Bedding- INSERTS
Duvet Insert- First let’s talk about the Duvet Insert. I actually have a Queen bed and THIS Queen Gray Duvet Cover with a king insert, that I have had for years and years. THIS Duvet Insert is what I have. If you have a queen bed and don’t want to spend a lot you could size up and do an affordable king insert, but it still might not be the same as a nice quality thick insert!
With a king bed you will have to invest in a fuller duvet insert like THIS. Or you could do TWO inexpensive duvet inserts. I did this on my daughters beds. Our new Serena & Lily Linen Gray Duvet has ties in each corner to keep the duvet in place. If your duvet does not have that you could sew in ties or purchase THESE Duvet Clips that I use to keep daughters twin duvet inserts in place (see what I use on Twin Beds HERE). SO important to make sure to keep the duvet insert in place or it will all end up at the end of the duvet.
Pillow Insert- We don’t sleep with down pillows but I love them inside all of my accent pillows. With pillow inserts for bedding I stick with the standard sham inserts for the standard and king shams. Euro fills I found THESE Synthetic 28×28 Inserts They fit my 26″ Blush Euro Shams perfectly. Another hack that you could do is using two standard inserts! This hack only works on a thick Euro Sham, just like THESE Quilted Shams(example shown in video).
As far as pillow sizes go they are pretty standard for beds. But I will give the this tip for a accent pillows- I wouldn’t go with anything smaller than a 22″ on a bed, you could get away with 20″ on a queen bed, but really bigger is better! I have THIS Gray Fringe Pillow in the front, it is 24″ and oh it is so good!
Sheets- As mentioned I LOVE the look of linen and that Linen bedding can last the decades (an investment) we decided to go with THESE White Linen Sheets. Linen is a great summer and spring bedding because it is breathable. Linen is even better than cotton at pulling moisture off the skin and allowing it to evaporate, which is why linen helps you stay cool in muggy, hot weather!
I also like to fold the duvet 1/4 of the way down then again half way down. I like to expose the bottom of the quilt by tucking the duvet under to add some fullness to the bottom of the duvet. Layering a throw at the end of the bed also adds to that fluffy…make you want to jump in the bed look! We have THIS Knitted Throw.
Below are some more pictures of our Master Bedroom to give you a feel for our small bedroom. It is 10×11 and have a two tall dressers along with a chair. The chair is where all the pillows get stacked at night. And yes- we make the bed every morning. It is part of my routine and helps me get the day started. Not to mention in a small room a bunch of pillows on a chair would just make it feel smaller and messy!
We have had that reading chair for years it is one of my favorite spots to read. The door to the left is our tiny closet- I will share inside that next week for our Small House Living Series!
This is the view from the entrance to the bedroom. We have two large windows that help to make the bedroom feel bright even with dark gray walls. (Walls are painted in GRAY 2121-10 from Benjamin Moore in a Flat Finish). Just added THIS Large Hamper with a lid for our dirty clothes.
Because I know I will get asked….”What stays on the bed when you sleep?” We actually sleep with it as is! Well minus all the pillows but 4. We both use one behind our regular sleeping pillow. The duvet stays folded up at the end of the bed and sometimes Kevin takes the throw off. I love the weight of the duvet on our feet- it is odd because it actually stays cooler under there! We don’t pull it up, just really leave as is!
UPDATE- Below is a photo of what our bedding looks like for Fall (read that post HERE) I love that I have basics that can mix well with other seasons.

Video- How to Make your Bedding Fluffy!
So I want to tell you that I couldn’t answer your instagram question last night about bed size-because we have a FULL! I know, right??? 🙂 But we have such a tiny bedroom. I really want mine to feel as big and comfy as yours does. Your bedroom is so beautiful. I love the pink flowers against the gray walls.
Hi Brooke! I love your bedding, it looks so cozy. I saw a big black and white check wallpaper and I thought that would look so cute in your girls room on the headboard wall. Just an idea next time you feel like changing it. Bring the black and white into their room. I also love your videos! You are so real and warm hearted just like your home.
I LOVE this whole bedding and thank you for the video to help! Question on the white euro pillows – the link shows the Sutter pillow – but it looks like a plain linen – is it the Cavallo?
hey girl- love the bedding! great video to!
Thanks, Brooke, the video was great! Your tricks will be very helpful for making a beautiful bed! Thanks for showing the two different ways to arrange the pillows.
Where do you find 27 or 28 inch down inserts? We have a king-size bed, and the king shams are never full when I use regular inserts marked king-size.
What about people who cannot spend $1,000 plus on their bedding?
That is why I do the video and share basic ideas that anyone can apply! A white quilt you can find at Target, Ikea, Home Goods etc. Same with the pillows. Not all of my readers buy exactly what I have. Many have bought a thing or two here and there. I am sharing ideas for all my readers- I try to share a variety. And blog different ideas 4-5 times a week.
HI! Love your master bedroom. Can I ask what size basket you got for your laundry? Thanks!
