Alright. Alright, I did it. I totally changed the rug in our living room. If you follow me on Instagram there were signs it was coming. I saw a picture from our family room last year and I just loved it. I love a neutral rug in our living room. I just DO!!!! It is calming to me. Calm in the busy that our front room can be. We have amazing built-in bookcases, that I adore and really sold me on this little cape. But like any bookcase they can feel busy.
So having something simple to ground it all just feels so right to me. I did love the rug we had in here. But the pink was starting to feel… like too much pink. I always intended the pink to be an accent color, the is why I painted our piano pink. So I seized the opportunity when I found I rug I loved. And once I decided the rug it did snowball, in a good way to replacing the bamboo shades in our living room. The bamboo shades we had were here when we moved in. They were starting to fray on the edges and the cords drove me nuts and scared me with Finn.
Thank you Walmart for sponsoring this post.
New Natural Light Rug in our Living Room-
Here she is!!! I was debating between a couple of rugs actually. They all were on Walmart.com. The way I shop for rugs is typically by brand. I find a brand I love then I search for all that brand offers. If you like one rug style, you are going to like more! I love the Safavieh Natural Rugs on Walmart.com. A lot! They are mostly all natural fibers, which I am drawn to. You can shop them HERE and find my exact new rug HERE color Ivory. Not only are they stylish, but very affordable for an 8×10 rug like I bought!
Living Room BEFORE-
Living Room with New Jute Rug After-
The new Jute Rug is very soft for a jute, since it is- 50% Jute, 50% New Zealand Wool. If you want the look of jute I recommend looking for a combo of the wool and jute. It had not shed (only really on black pants). I do recommend getting a rug pad. I still need to. I like going to a local carpet company and having them cut me a thick pad that they use under carpet (have them cut it slightly smaller so it fits nicely).
Natural Bamboo Shades in our Living Room-
You know I am in-love with this light natural bamboo shades from Walmart. We now have them in every room in our home (except the kitchen). I had even bought new bamboo shades for the bathrooms, that I just changed to THESE cordless bamboo shades. I love, love that they are cordless. AND they are so affordable. I did just add some to Finn’s room too, so now all the shades on the front of the house are the same (something I have been wanting to change). PS- the bamboo shades go up to 45″ wide- you need to click “See more” and keep scrolling by the sizes AND they come in different colors!!! Click HERE to shop them all).

I personally like inside-mount. So measure in three spots inside your window to find the size that will fit the window all over. And if they only come in a size that is LONGER, meaning you will have extra on the bottom that is ok. It will look totally fine. You do not need to cut the length. The ones I have in the bathroom are actually longer. And if you have a really wide window I recommend doing two INSIDE (I will do a follow-up post on this). Find more window tips HERE. See below how longer bamboo shades are ok-
Built-in Bookcase
I didn’t change a lot it in our bookcases. I did add in THESE battery operated candles from Walmart.com. I love the little glow they offer, while causing no fire-risk with a candle! Any chance to add a hygge feeling I do it!
I added THESE same battery operated candles (that come with a remote) inside my glass jar too.
I also found a really similar coffee table to ours- a budget version to our splurge. They are both a cement top, which I love the durability and different texture it offers. Check-out THIS Better Homes and Garden coffee table (affordable and stylish for under $140!!! What?!!). PS- you can shop everything in my home HERE.
Affordable Art in the Living Room- Update Family Photos-
I did update some of the frames going up our stairs with pictures from our vacation in Hawaii. I found great app that turns your image into a watercolor! Makes your photos look like a custom water-color. The app is Waterlogue. Easy way to update your home in a really affordable way. I linked some affordable frames at the end of this post!
I kept our piano pretty simple. I did find THIS set of baskets that I used one for on the piano with my fiddle leaf fig. Also did you know you can find real, live plants on walmart.com too? I love finding sources for great plants, like THIS Z-plant.

I love it all!!!! And you know how much I love your gallery wall, so thank you so much for sharing it today. Everything is just so beautiful! 😍
Where is the splurge coffee table from?? I want it! 🙂
How do you plants get enough sunlight on the bookcases? Some of those varieties you have seem like they need direct sun?
Yes! I have that LARGE window above the sofa that they get good sun from. They are thriving here. I have had them both there for over a year.

So pretty!! Where did you get the wool bin on the built in??
Beautiful! Thanks so much for sharing! I have bamboo blinds currently but they have a string and it too makes me nervous with my little children. I love the look of these blinds but am bummed they don’t come in a size that is wider than 24″. My windows are 27″ 🙁
you need to hit “see more” and scroll down!! They go unto 45″ wide!!! https://rstyle.me/n/dezfx9b5qwf
The rug looks so nice! What a good choice. Also, I absolutely love these bamboo shades, and actually purchased some for our home. They are perfect! I have a window that I think they would look great in, but unfortunately the window is bigger than 45” wide. Do you have any suggestions?
So I would suggest doing two if you can divide it evenly??
Oh, good suggestion! Let me see if that is a possibility.
Where did you get those frames with the glass and gold knobs?
Thanks Shannon
On this post I shared them and a coupon code- https://nestingwithgrace.com/presets-family-pictures-and-printing-photos/
LOVE the new rug!! It just makes the room feel so cozy and complete. Everything looks beautiful.
Walmart has become such a great option for home decor! I love that rug in your room! Do you have the shiplap wall paper in the back of your built in bookcases? I tried to “shop your home” but I couldn’t find it. I have similar bookcases and I’m trying to find something to put in the back of the shelves! Thx!!
I agree! So that wallpaper was leftover from our master bedroom makeover. It is MK Wallpaper. Similar to the target one. But the MK is not peel and stick (and more expensive)

Thank you!!!!
Beautiful transformation! I honestly cannot get enough of your talent and blog showcasing it. Thank you for sharing your love of design with us. I’ve been considering getting those blinds for my boys room for awhile now because of your recommendation…and today’s blog was affirmation for me to go buy them!
Thank you! For Finn we do have the blackout curtain panels with them. For the girls room we don’t, since their room is more private and they are older and don’t take naps.
Just FYI
Hi, do you have a link to for the blackout shades? Also can I add bamboo shades to French doors? Thanks in advance:)

Looks nice. Where did the other rug go?
Everything looks so pretty. Love your art using the Waterlogue app!!!
What bamboo shades do you personally like better? The Walmart or Overstock?
They should be the same…
But I have only bought the Walmart
hey girl- love the rug and the shades! so cool!
Love it all so much! I live in a 40’s cape cod style home in Canada. Every time I feel like my rooms are too small I come to your blog and always feel so inspired!! Just an fyi all your shop links take me to the Walmart website. Not sure if it’s just my computer?
yes! Canada does that 🙁
…Just read that it’s for similar styles. Sorry haven’t had my coffee yet!
I’m with you and so I love with the bamboo shades. I just haven’t finalized the deal because I’m worried. Our upstairs has painted white trim on our windows and lighter colored wood floorsand the downstairs has the original 1906 dark wood trim and dark floors. Can I ask your opinion? Do you think that the wood color should influence my shade color choice? I want to stay with the lighter color like you have in Finns room.
I would go with if you get a lot of light or not….
We had a little darker ones in the family room and I LOVE the lighter so much more. We already had good light, but it really makes the space feel bigger.
Hope that helps!
Do you have recommendations for bamboo shades that are wider than 45″?
Thanks!
