A Colorful Vintage-Inspired Bedroom Makeover for Kenzie

I know I say I love a lot of the rooms we make over, but this one might actually be my favorite. This room belongs to Kenzie, one of Lola’s best friends. She’s been around our family so much that we really do love her like one of our own, which made getting to do this room for her extra special. And her reaction? THE BEST. She walked in and said, “It doesn’t even feel like I’m in the same room.” She was so happy, so grateful, and genuinely excited about every little thing. We had so much fun doing this one, but watching her take it all in at the end made it even better.

The Before

We were starting with a pretty blank slate. There had previously been bunk beds in the room, but those had been taken out, leaving just one girl in the room and space to work with.

The room already had white beadboard around the bottom half of the walls, neutral walls above and carpet. And that meant we could have some fun.

Kenzies Bedroom After

We added soft patterned wallpaper and painted the bead board and trim Hay by Farrow & Ball, the prettiest buttery yellow. From there, we layered in color and pattern through the bedding and furniture.

I wanted to maximize the space and give Kenzie plenty of spots for friends to hang out. These pink striped curtains (white rod) are a favorite, hung to the ceiling, they draw the eye up and make the room feel so much bigger!

The Bed + All Those Layers

A white metal bed was actually something Kenzie’s family had just found on Facebook Marketplace, and it couldn’t have been more perfect. It has that sweet vintage feel we wanted and gave us such a pretty starting point for all the bedding.

We started with a mattress pad to make it extra comfortable and then added the cutest white sheets with yellow polka dots. And they are SO buttery soft. Seriously, the kind of sheets that make you want to climb right in.

Then came all the layers. We added the pink gingham duvet, green checkered shams, white euro shams with blush pink embroidered edge and more of those fun yellow polka dots. At the foot of the bed, we layered a soft light pink quilt for another cozy texture and a little break from all the pattern.

Bedding Basics

And green striped ottomans for storage and the extra seating we wanted for Kenzie and all her friends! LOVE the bold stripe against all of the gingham, florals and polka dots.

The Art + Those Pink Bedside Lights

The walls around the bed ended up being one of my favorite parts of the entire room. We hung the large dark green floral artwork above the bed with plug-in sconces! That deeper green gave us some contrast against all of the softer colors and helped tie in the green throughout the room.

Then we added the fun Vogue and La Mode posters alongside it. I love that they add a little personality and make the room feel more like a teenage girl’s room. And then there are those lights! They have a little vintage feel, bring another shade of pink onto the walls and give her cozy bedside lighting without needing nightstands.

The Rug

The rug pulled the room together. The yellow connects with the sheets and wallpaper, the green ties into the bedding and other accents, and the floral pattern adds another vintage-inspired layer.

A Facebook Marketplace Find Gets a New Life

One of the biggest pieces in the room actually came from our own house! We had found this beautiful cabinet on Facebook Marketplace a while ago and had loved it in our home, but I kept thinking it would be so good in Kenzie’s room.

We transformed it with Bottle of Bordeaux by Benjamin Moore, this gorgeous deep berry/burgundy that was exactly what the room needed. I love it paired with the softer pinks and yellows like this Daffodils art and the green striped ottoman next to it looks so flattering against the deep color!

We filled the shelves with books, plants, a vintage-inspired radio, keepsakes and lots of colorful paper goods from Rifle Paper Co. It all helped the cabinet feel collected, colorful and full of personality.

The Vanity

We tucked a white vanity into the corner and paired it with a simple curved chair (similar).

I love giving teenagers a designated spot where they can sit and get ready, keep their everyday things and have a little area that’s completely their own. I love the detail of the rounded mirror, and of course we couldn’t resist adding another pink lamp. Lots of cozy light options.

The Ceiling Light

We replaced her ceiling light with a beautiful oversized fixture with a pleated shade, delicate pink detailing and brass trim.

The Dresser + The Sweetest Bulletin Board Surprise

On the other side of the room, we kept her existing dresser but gave it a quick little upgrade with pretty gold pulls. Such a simple change, but it made such a difference! Lamp // Yellow Tray // Art // Trinket Dish

Above, we hung a beautiful scalloped green bulletin board. I loved it immediately, but after the reveal Kenzie told me something that completely made my day.
She had been wanting a bulletin board and had actually been saving things to put on one! She already had photos, ribbons, notes and little memories ready to go.

That’s what I love about a memo board in a teenager’s room. It’s decor, but it’s also something that will keep changing and becoming more her as she adds to it.

And Of Course…A Diffuser

You know we weren’t finishing a bedroom makeover without a diffuser!

We added one to her dresser, and Kenzie was so excited, she and her sister had just been talking about how much they both wanted one. Another little wish-list item we had no idea about!

The Best Part of the Entire Makeover

There’s something really special about creating a space for someone you love and then watching them realize that all of those little details were chosen just for them.
This room feels like Kenzie now…happy, colorful, cozy and full of personality.
