I started Essential Oils as a hope that they would help my daughter with her nervousness at night. We were desperate for a change, Kevin and I were out of ideas. She really was struggling to relax enough and being able to calm herself to go to bed. It was hard on her and our entire family. I wished she was a tiny baby and I could rock her to sleep like I once did. Our 10 year old was harder to get to bed than our 2 year old. And she was not always like that. It’s typical that as we get older all the things we have to do and look forward to are hard to shut-off (for some of us). And the things we were doing and tools we were giving her were not working. (ps- I did ask her if I could share he experience).
After seeing an instagram story of my friend with their “nighttime routine” of a roller ball of lavender and a lovely diffuser by her kids bed, I knew I needed to try it. I actually couldn’t stop thinking about it.
Other things about oils kept coming up in my daily life, like our Doctor prescribing Tea Tree Oil for Finn’s water-warts on his tummy (consult your Doctor before). So I decided it was meant to be and I ordered my starter kit. I have been obsessed since. I waited to share it here until I was certain I loved them and until I was using them in my daily life. It has been about three months using oils daily, now I cannot imagine my life without them. Our entire family enjoys them too.
My favorites way to use oils are for our nighttime routine, diffusing them in our home rather than candles (and you know I was OBSESSED with candles, but love that a diffuser is a safer option). I also am OVER THE MOON excited about the blend I have been using on my face as a moisturizer (no more break-outs!!). But there are so many other things I am using oils for too. And I am just starting! I swear everyday I tell Kevin, I just love these!!!
Favorite Things I use Young Living Essential Oils for-
**Make sure to research before using oils. The amount of oil you use depends on your age (especially for babies).
Kids Nighttime Routine-
As I mentioned above we were in need of a better nighttime routine, without resorting to medicine. Now every night we (the girls know what to do) fill up their diffuser and add a about 4 drops of Lavender Oil and and 4 drops Stress Away (smells so dreamy). I also made some roller bottles of just Lavender and one of just Stress Away. I rub them on the girls feet, their wrist and a little on their spine and give them a tiny massage. Kevin likes to tease me “the girls nightly rub-down”. But then he acknowledges how much it has helped. We also love that their diffuser is a little nightlight. Happy to report Ella has not gotten out of her bed ONE TIME since starting this routine. Not once in three months. Compared to when she was coming down every night, 15 minutes after putting her to bed, saying that she couldn’t fall asleep and too much was in her mind. Then crying and us getting frustrated. Not anymore friends. If you struggle with this, I highly recommend trying Lavender and giving your child a little massage. It might be the new routine she loves, but Lavender oil is pretty amazing.
Lavender is a herb that is widely known to help with nervousness, and sleeplessness.
Face Oil/ Moisturizer
Glow Serum, I am obsessed with this! So I make it two ways. One way in a roller bottle so I can just roll it on my cheekbones when I want a little glow after putting my makeup on (all the time). The other way I make it is in a little dropper and drop a few drops into the palm of my hand and rub it all over my face like a moisturizer (after I wash my face). You can literally get rid of ALL of your moisturizers and just use this (plus sunscreen). All you need is Frankincense and Copaiba Essential Oils, both come in your starter kit (see info at the end of this post). And I highly recommend using the Think Dirty App to identify the potential risks associated with the personal care products you use everyday.
Glow Serum Roller Bottle-
Add these into a roller bottle-
- 6 drops Frankincense
- 6 drops Copaiba
- Top off the roller bottle with Jojoba Oil (does not clog pours)
Glow Serum Moisturizer-
Drop all these oils into a 4 oz dropper bottle. You an use different oils based on skin type.
- 20 drops Frankincense (brightens skin, fights blemishes & promotes healthy, glowing skin)
- 20 drops Geranium (supports smooth, healthy skin)
- 20 drops Lavender (great for healthy glowing skin, for all skin types)
- 20 drops Copaiba (helps with inflammation)
- Fill the rest of the bottle with Jojoba Oil (balances the natural oils on your face and doesn’t clog pores)
- Apply to skin after washed
I also have been applying Frankincense directly to a pimple or fine lines! It helps!
Wellness-
I started to use a roller ball of Thieves and Frankincense to keep us above the wellness line. We rub the roller bottle on the bottom of their feet or on our spine everyday.. I have read that the main thing with oils is consistency.
- 10 drops thieves
- 10 drops Frankincense
- Fill the rest of the jar with a carrier oil (I use fractionated coconut oil)
- We roll this on bottom of feet or spine to keep us in the wellness zone
Happy Tummy-
(wish I had this when Finn had his tummy issues, now I will!)
- 10 drops Digize
- 10 drops Peppermint
- Fill the rest of the jar with a carrier oil (I use fractionated coconut oil)
- I roll this directly on stomach to help with an upset tummy or to keep things regular.

Detangler-
We use a detangler almost everyday for my girls. I was excited to find a recipe to make my own that is non-toxic and also has health benefits. I Young Living Lavender Mint Conditioner, combined with distilled water and Essential Oils. I have pretty dry hair, but my girls hair is pretty normal. So I did a combo of oils, after doing some research.
- Bring 2 cups Distilled Water to a simmer over medium heat. Take off heat and add the below ingredients-
- 1/2 cup Young Living Lavender Mint Daily Conditioner
- 3 drops Geranium Essential Oil
- 3 drops Tea Tree Essential Oil (and it helps to prevent lice)
- 5 drops Sandalwood Essential Oil
- Add to an amber spray bottle and evenly distribute to the root of your hair (leave-in or you can wash it out. We leave it in)
Cleaning-
I use Thieves concentrate to clean everything! You can read more on what /I clean with here.
Lavender Water for Bedding-
My friend, Leslie actually turned my onto Lavender Water. She would give it as a Christmas gift every year. Now I don’t live by her so I have had to start making my own. Thankfully I can get the Young Living Lavender Oil. I use the Lavender Water spray after I clean my bedding. I always put my bedding on my bed slightly damp, and let it finish air drying, this will decrease the wrinkles. Then I spray it with some lavender water. Doing this, also helps the sheets to fit better too, especially our linen sheets. And my girls now like their pillows to be sprayed with lavender water before bed, helps them go to sleep.
Lavender Water-
- Small jar with tight-fitting lid
- 1 ounce (2 tablespoons) witch hazel or vodka
- 10 drops lavender essential oil
- 3 ounces (6 tablespoons) water
- In the jar, combine the witch hazel or vodka and the lavender essential. Place the lid on tightly and shake well for 15-20 seconds to combine the two.
- Open the lid to the jar and add in the water. Replace the lid and shake again for 15-20 seconds to combine.
Essential Oils for Wool Dryer Balls-
After I did THIS post on the 1o Most Toxic Things in our Homes we quickly got rid of all dryer sheets and fabric softeners. I use THESE Wool Dryer Balls and I add a couple drops of Lavender Essential Oils to each ball. Make sure the oil absorbs in before tossing in with your clothes. (PS- many of you said your clothes are still staticky, that is due to over-drying. So decrease your drying time. And if you still have an issue you attach a safety pin to your dryer balls or some toss in a ball of tinfoil!)
Diffuser and Humidifier Combo-
We have been trying to get away from so many candles. Not only because they can be toxic, they make my kids nervous with fire safety talks we have been having (and actually me too). The problem is that I just LOVE, like really LOVEEEEEEE the hygge feeling candles add. I gave a diffuser a go. I am pretty in love my my diffusers. I put one in every single room in our home. My favorite thing about the diffusers we have is that they have lights inside, like a soft lamp or nightlight! And they smell so clean! You can diffuse whatever you are needing- calm, energy, headache relief, help relive a cough and more. There is even a combo to duplicate my favorite Anthropologie candle- the Volcano. And I made sure to get diffusers for the kids rooms that they are a diffuser and humidifier combo. One of my favorites to diffuse is just Stress Away Essential Oil. It smells so good and it has helped me to relax. I have been diffusing it before the kids get home from school and the homework, craziness starts!
Volcano Diffuser-
- 5 drops Grapefruit
- 2 drops Orange Essential Oil
- 3 drops Idaho Blue Spruce or Northern Lights Black
- 3 drops Geranium

I love essential oils. I’m just getting onto them so this blog was perfect! Thanks for sharing so many great ideas! I just ordered two photo books from chatbooks app after I watched your story! Thank you so much!
Oh thank you Lori!!! They have been SO much fun for us to play with!!! Learning so much.
Hi Brooke,
Thank you so much for this information! I’m definitely going to try the bedtime oils for myself. Too much on my mind 😩
I did want to mention to you about the kids getting winter colds a lot. I used to clean my bathrooms with vinegar too until our pediatrician told me that vinegar does not kill cold and flu viruses- that we need to use a stronger disinfectant to clean, especially during the winter. Of course, this was our Dr’s opinion, but I have noticed that since I started wiping down surfaces with a disinfectant, we have a lot less colds in the house. Thanks again for the oil recommendation 😊
Great post. I started YL a year ago. I love them. Wish I had them when my children were young. My daughter’s sleep issues back then sounds just like your daughter’s. I have ditched and switched so many toxic items from my home with YL oils and products.
Love love love your blog and stories! You have such good ideas. I ordered some hand towels with your discount code…can’t wait to get them 🙂 I’ve been using the oils for a couple months now, love them!!! My husband is asking for the diffuser to be turned on at night. We use a mix for easy breathing in our bedroom. I have a quick question…where are your cute shoes from, the black ones, might even be house slippers. I think I need a pair of them, lol!
Thank you for sharing your life, and for helping make ours better!
Angie
Thank you so much Angela!! You can find my slippers HERE
I’ve had some negative reactions to YL oil blends but also some super positive ones. Owie and digize are amazing! Love them! Also super helpful to know about the static being from over drying. I haven’t used dryer sheets for years but recently have been tired of all the static and
nothing I’ve been trying has been working (homemade reusable dryer sheets with vinegar and EO, safety pins, aluminum ball) I’ll try drying less time and see if that helps.
I just got my starter kit a few weeks ago, and remembered you had posted the cute, colorful roller bottles a while back. So I just went to your blog today to find them, and there was your new post – just for me :). Thanks for sharing, and I love following you and your family on ig. You’re all the cutest! I’ll be following you on @nestingwell too now.
Oh thank you so much Linda!!
I love YL oils too! I like lavender and cedarwood together for sleep 🙂 Thieves is just a life saver, one sign of sickness, it gets rubbed on the feet, diffused and GONE! You wake up good as new! I also use them to clean, so good! I’ve made my own ‘carpet fresh’ with purification and baking soda too. Works great!
I am so glad you discovered oils. They really are great for so many things. Beeswax candles are a great alternative to toxic candles.
I love my diffuser on my nightstand and use lavender in it every night. Lavender has always had a calming effect on me. When my granddaughter was a tiny baby and have trouble sleeping I always used the lavender baby bath and then gave her a little massage with the lavender bedtime lotion, she always slept so much better. I also love lemon grass in the spring and summer months, the house smells so good and fresh. I love essential oils. Thank you for all of your tips and recipes
I rubbed frankincense oil mixed with coconut oil on my chest at night to reduce my hacking cough at night that I couldn’t get rid of all summer. (Curses compromised immune system)
Just received a starter kit a couple weeks ago and I am using them every day! Love this post and reading your ideas! Thanks
I’m signed up with YL too. Love their oils! Do you have their app? Oh my word. So, so helpful!! It’s called Ref Guide 4 EO. You can look up issues and the oil that helps that issue. It’s greatness.
Thank you so much for the Volcano recipe! I absolutely love that scent!
yay!!!
Brooke, I’ve been using Young Living oils for 15 months now and I absolutely love them! You should try the Thieves household cleaner because all you need is 1-2 caps full in a quart of wster snd can be used throughout your home! The bottle will probably last about 6+ months. I also make my own Thieves foaming hand soap for all my sinks…love the smell! Have fun with your YL oils!
Thank you!!! I have that and have just been using the Thieves and love it!
Ah!!! I’ve been waiting for this blog post! We just started our oil journey with YL before Christmas and I am obsessed!!! Love seeing different combos and what other have tried! So happy you shared your fav oil “accessories” too. I love me a pretty roller ball 😍
Sending IG love from London, On 🇨🇦
Hello!! Thank you in London!!
I just ordered my starter kit this week from a friend. Your post is such an amazing blessing with just the info I need to get started ❤️❤️❤️
Girl, only you could make me want to drop a paycheck on essential oils! Hahahaha Love your blog, your IG posts and your stories! So inspirational and fun! Thank you for your time, thoughtfulness and creativity!
Ha! I love you!!! Thank you!!
How long do you keep the diffuser on at night for your daughter.? I’m going to try this with my girls. I love your blog and Instagram content. You’re a huge blessing.
Thanks Susie!! I leave them on for about 30 minutes before they go to bed! Then on for about an hour after they go to bed. The one in Finn’s room it has a timer for 60 minutes or more!
I use YL oils regularly and love them. We have the lamp diffuser because it has so many options. I really like that it doesn’t look like a diffuser and most important, will diffuse all night, up to 10 hours. I love Frankincense, just wish it was one of the more economical oils! We use Ninxgia Red every day.
I love your blog but was surprised you hadn’t mentioned essential oils until now…
I just love your blog! I never read any blogs but yours I do. Thanks for all the info. This is the first time I’ve actually felt like I’d be interested in essential oils!
Thank you so much Jamie!!!
I’m a trail runner and due to plantar fasciitis I had to stop running for several years. I tried absolutely every single remedy, exercise, orthotic…(stopping short of a gigantic collagen needle injection), to fix it but nothing worked…until a friend suggested Frankinsence. Every night I put several drops directly on my heel, massaged it in (I used a lavendar salve to massage it around) and I swear, with in 3-4 months it was gone. I haven’t had any problems since and happily running trails again.
That is amazing!!! Frankincense is one of my favorites!!!
I love this so much! I have been using YL products for the last few months and am completely hooked! It changed my families life for the better. Also thank you for the de-tangle mixture! I needed this for my tiny humans and their crazy bed head.
oh good!!!
Thank you for posting this! I have been using oils for a few years and often forget about them! I have been trying to use them more so thank you for the tips. My daughter has recently been having a lot of anxiety at night and I feel horrible that I didn’t even think of using lavender for her! Thank you for the reminder and I am going to use it tonight! Love your blog!
Nancy
So much wonderful info! The link to your “living room diffuser” didn’t seem to work, so was wondering if I could get that link?
Thank you!!!
That young living one is the only one that takes you back to my original post-(You can get it when you get a starter kit (best value)- ORDER HERE and make sure the number 17476869 appears in both the “Enroller” and “Sponsor ID” fields- that is under my umbrella. You do not have to sell the oils- you can just get a starter kit).
Welcome to the YL family!! Our family has been using them for 6 years and they have completely changed our life!! We have switched pretty much every product we use over to Young Living and have never felt better!!! Congrats on making the switch!!!
Thank you!! I am in love!
Why do suggest the Dewdrop diffuser vs the desert mist for the starter kit?? Can’t decide between the two 🙂
I have the desert mist and love it! It has a pretty flicker setting!
For the happy tummy, do you put that into a roller? Roll onto belly?
Yes! I like a roller just because it is easiest to use. And yes- onto the belly
Hi, Brooke, is there a reason your glow moisturizer has geranium but not the roller?
Thanks!
just because the roller was created for “starter oils” you can totally add geranium!!
Hi Brooke. Any secret to get the roller ball to roll🤔. I ordered the gold top ones you suggested.
Living my Young Living!
Lisa
Maybe you filled it too full?? Leave a little air on the top!
Thank you for this awesome post! Myself and two of my children have a ton of allergies. So, we have gone the natural route – one step at a time. I love essential oils! And when I saw your post on essential oils and all the ways you use them, I clicked and found this wonderful post!!! Thank you for the insight – so helpful!!! Today, I received the wool balls for my dryer. I can’t wait to use them!!!
Xoxo,
Yamile Navarro
