A Cozy Fall Dining Room- Fall Cake Recipe

There’s something about fall that makes me want to cozy up our home a little more. I didn’t completely change our dining room for the season, but a few new pieces, some pretty fall details, and a cozy family night made me fall in love with this space all over again.

Mixing Up the Seating

One of the biggest changes was actually taking a few chairs away from our extra-long dining table and mixing up the seating. We added a brown buffalo check bench with a tall back and pleated skirt, which instantly made the room feel warmer and cozier.

I also added two floral chairs with a white background, and then added ruffled striped seat cushions to all of our existing wood dining chairs. I also have burgundy ruffled slipcovers on a couple of the dining chairs, which brought in the prettiest deep fall color.

I love having all the different patterns together. The buffalo check, stripes, florals rich burgundy and all those little ruffled details. They aren’t perfectly matched, but they all work together and give the room that layered, collected feeling I love. The ruffles add another little bit of softness too, which makes the whole dining area feel extra cozy for fall.

Making the Table Feel Cozy

Since our table is so long, I used two lazy Susans (similar) to break up the space and create little groupings down the center. I added potted herbs and a candelabra to each one. But my favorite addition might be the little blue portable lamps.

I also pulled out our fall dessert plates and napkins. Nothing fancy, just those little seasonal touches that make an ordinary night at home feel special.

A Few Fall Touches Around the Room

I added a few new things to our mantel and shelves too. The dark artwork with sunflowers feels perfect for this time of year, and I filled a tall purple radish vase with clippings from a tree in our backyard.

I also have new green and pink buffalo-check mixing bowls and regular bowls out in the room. I love bringing in fall colors without feeling like everything has to be orange or covered in pumpkins. The deeper greens, pinks, purples, browns and blues still feel like fall, just in a way that works with our home.

Fall Cake + A Movie

And obviously, a cozy fall night needed dessert.

We made the prettiest spice cake, but here’s the secret…it starts with a doctored-up cake mix, so it’s actually really simple to make. Paired with the fluffy almond frosting, it is SO yummy. We topped it with fresh blackberries, figs and a little sage for color, and it turned into the prettiest fall cake. It was almost too pretty to cut into… almost.

While we ate, we projected a movie right onto our white limewash wall. The lamps were glowing, the candles were lit, there was cake on the table and we were all together.

Sometimes making home feel special isn’t about a big makeover or planning something extravagant. Just setting the stage for a fun, cozy family night at home and exactly what I want our house to feel like this fall.
