We shared our back yard deck reveal last week HERE we partnered with Raymour and Flanigan on the project. We are absolutely loving this new space. I am actually sitting on our new sectional writing this post and taking in some vitamin D. I promised to share how we painted the deck, and by we I mean my sweet hubby. It was a real labor of love, a lot of spindles needed to be painted. He actually started to paint it with some paint that he picked up at Home Depot that was on sale. I was away for the summer visiting family in Utah and he sent me a picture, and I told him “ya, that does not look good.” So I sent him the colors I wanted and he made the change and got right to the hours of work!
The entire deck is painted in Cape Cod Gray from Behr at Home Depot. It is just a can of paint you can pick up already mixed. Now keep in mind, we painted our deck a year ago, so there has been some fading and the color is not exact shown in the picture. Next he painted the stripes in Porch and Patio Floor Paint from Behr. This is something that you have to pick the color you want mixed in the paint. We did Hale Navy from Benjamin Moore for the blue and Mountain Peak White from Benjamin Moore for the white strips.
Here is a picture of the deck from looking up at it from our grass. You can see the difference painting the deck made and the new furniture from Raymour & Flanigan.
The painted rug is 160″x 72″. The reason for the weird length is we did 20″ strips, we didn’t want to cut any of them short. It looks best and more like a rug to leave a boarder of the deck color around the perimeter. We did a foot for the border and that equaled exactly two wood boards. The best way to paint the rug is to tape it off, measure first then paint. Make sure that where you tape the inside of the tape is the size you want the stripe to be.
Another thing I added to the decor was our blue antique door that I had previously inside our home, it is painted in Hale Navy as well. I also added the Chowder House sign that I have had for a long time. To protect the wood from warping and chipping I applied a clear coat of Minwax Helsman protective coating. It was really simple, but keep in mind this clear coat sticks to paint brushes and you will have to toss it out after using it, or clean with paint thinner. I just did one coat over the top of all the pieces, it leaves a very faint shine, but on the door I already painted it in a high gloss paint so you cant even tell a difference. I love using this product, it makes it so you can really put anything outside you want to use for your patio decor. The custom 4’x4′ BEACH sign was made by Queen B Home and she applied a protective polyurethane coat over the top.
We had gotten our new patio table from Raymour & Flanigan that we love but we really wanted to be able to put an umbrella in it. We don’t have any overhead shade, we didn’t want to block any light coming into our house. So the umbrella is a priority to be able to enjoy eating outside. I wanted to share this step to show to not be afraid to alter new pieces to work for you. We couldn’t drill a hole right in the center of the table it would have went through two slats and the wood would have split. We drilled the hole in the center of a slat and it is off center from the rest of the table but it doesn’t bother us at all.
You can see how I adjusted the decor around the umbrella. It totally works great and we love having the shade.
I love mixing new and old pieces to create a unique, one-of-a-king look. This tea cart is an awesome piece that I found on Close5 App. I have shared about this app before, and have bought other pieces on this site. We actually sold our old patio set on this site, great way to buy new pieces! I was going to leave the tea cart as is in the washed gray. But when I had it on the deck with everything else it just looked washed out and I didn’t love it. So I pulled out a can of my favorite gold spray paint that I keep stock of and got to work. It took a full can to get it covered. I really love it now and mixing vintage finds with new pieces. It pops off of the gray and blue and ties in the gold tone on my favorite red and white chairs.
I was excited to find this Croquet set on Close5 App as well! The kids have loved playing with it and I love the color it adds to the deck. If you are on your phone you can download The Buy and Sell App for iPhones HERE and for Androids HERE.

I have partnered with Raymour & Flanigan and received product that I hand picked in exchange for this post. All expressed opinions are 100% my own.
We have a small front porch that needs painting every year. I don’t think we let it cure long enough but I’m not sure. This year I am going to sand the deck off and repaint it with Behr. The porch looks terrible and makes the house look terrible. I also live in CT – Fairfield and the winters do not help. Any suggestions?
We didn’t sand it before. But it could be different types of wood. We might have to re-paint next year, it is holding up really well actually. best of luck!
hey girl love your porch! So pretty!
Thanks so much Shawna!
How fun are those stripes? And I love the furniture you chose and how you styled your deck – it looks like such a great place to hang out as a family and entertain!!
Thank you Lisa! We have loved spending time on it on these spring days.
Beautiful deck! I love having an umbrella in the back but the sun fades the color. Do you spray something on yours to protect it?
It has faded a little from last year, I do close it daily. They should already be treated for the sun. But I am sure there is something out there! I will have to look in to it also!
This looks great! We are going to do my mother in law’s patio area for her as a gift. Love the two color paints to match the umbrella
What a nice and thoughtful gift! Best of luck and thank you for your comment!
I love how the painted floor turned out! I painted a rug for our deck, because I would be scared i would mess up the floor if I tried to paint it! Your deck looks so inviting and relaxing with the blues and whites.
Thank you so much Mary!
as soon as steve finishes power washing the front of the house (only taken him over a year to get to it)… i’m stealing your faux rug idea. i showed the kids a few weeks ago & they LOOOOVED it! For the umbrella hole in the table, what size bit for the drill? I have a friend who didn’t have a table on her deck but wanted an umbrella. They drilled the hole into the “wall top” of the deck. I thought it was a pretty awesome idea! Extra shade without having to take up room on the deck!
Your deck is so fantastic! I am swooning over that painted rug!! Thanks for sharing it with us at the Outdoor Extravaganza Party -I’m featuring this for sure!!
Thank you Krista!! I am flattered!
