We are SO excited to finally be doing something we have had on our wish list for awhile now! Kevin is actually the one who pushed for this project. New Siding in Cedar Impressions! Our home is a 1950’s cape in Connecticut and 1100 square feet. The vinyl siding was fine, but it had some areas that were damaged. One damaged spot by the deck that the BBQ had melted! We came from Utah with a stucco home and never had to think twice about the siding melting! It melted the first time we used the BBQ. Not good! Our neighbors updated their wood shake shingles to Cedar Impressions last year. They didn’t want to pay to have the wood painted anymore. We couldn’t believe how they looked EXACTLY like the wood they previously had! We kept saying to each other “why are they replacing it with the same thing?” Little did we know.
Kevin called and had a company come out to give us a bid. That first bid was close to $25k!
I reached out to our neighbor for the company who they used. We called that company to come out for a bid. That bid came back at $14k! (the company was Homa Siding).
Much more in the range we were willing to spend.
I do want to say that we have saved up for this. We wanted to do this when we moved in. But wanted to build back up our savings after paying for the bathroom remodels and kitchen. Then save up for this project. Do what YOU can do as family. I just want to share our experience and share pricing and information AS information that’s all. In hopes it will help someone else.
Cedar Impressions-
The Cedar Impressions come in 5″ or 7″. We decided to go with the 5″ size. Our neighbors have the Cedar Impressions in 7″. I bet you can guess what color we went with too!
Below is our neighbors home with the 7″ Cedar Impressions in the dark gray-
Below is day one of our new exterior update with the Cedar Impressions-
They came in with three guys and took everything off the deck and got right to work! Photo below is about half-way thru day one.
Below is what it looks like at the end of day one! And we are thrilled with what it looks like so far…
White Shake Shingles Inspiration-
I snapped some pictures around our area in Connecticut of some homes that are major inspiration for the white shake shingle look we were going for. I have to admit I was a little nervous thinking I made the wrong choice….but just driving around seeing these homes made me excited!
We will share the full reveal next week! Also ideas that I have for what to do instead of the lattice under the deck tomorrow (See our deck HERE)
Question though…how do you think the front steps will look with the new white shake shingles? (New roof is on the list next!)
Watch the quick video tour as we walk all around the house and show where we want to add a fence too!

Oh I cant wait to see the front! Love Love the white shake!!

OMG, I hear Russian music on the background. Are the contractors Russians? I am from Ukraine and speak Russian…. 🙂 Tell those guys that Nataliya is asking them to do a fine job on your house LOL

yes!! Ha! So cute!

I think the stairs will look amazing with the new siding! Maybe add something with a fun color though? Like a newly painted front door?
Kelly says
LOVE! Cannot wait to see the big reveal 🙂 Cedar shake is so pretty, and perfect for your cute cape!

We had siding done a few years ago when we had a bathroom added upstairs to our little cape. I love the cedar look and had the cedar shingle style done on the front and ordinary siding on the side and back of the house-trained a considerable amount on the cost-

Yes- we did look into that too! It was like $1200 savings to just do the regular white siding on the back.

Love the cedar shakes. I also have a similar cape and have wanted those for a while. Thanks for the Indy, I’m enjoying your blog.

Worth every penny!! Looks fantastic!!! Definitely with these big projects, it’s worth saving up and getting the best materials that will stand the test of time, (in my opinion).

LOoks Fabulous 😍💖 I need new siding. I have an old farm house. What is the name of the maker of the siding?? Love it!!
Cindy says
What a difference in price estimates. Pays to shop around. Do you mind sharing your contractor?
Lindsey says
Looks awesome!! Can’t wait to see how it all comes together 🙂

Hi – also interested to see if you can share your contractor?

We used Homa Siding!

I loved the neighborhood homes you shared…so lovely. Your house will look really nice, too. The front step paint treatment is the neatest thing I’ve ever seen. After watching that video and seeing your black chairs I went on the Way Day sale and ordered two in white. That’s something I’ve always wanted. Thanks for all the inspiration. Love how everything is done in realistic time and with sensible spending. So lad we all can share!

oh yay!!! I am happy you got the chairs on the sale! And thank you!

I have the same siding, for over 3 years, still looks perfect! We live over by the water in Fairfield, and so many people stop to ask the color of our cedar shakes. I love their reaction when I tell them it’s “plastic”.

oh yay!! That makes me so happy!
Beth says
Wow! I love the look of these!! Have you seen any homes that have had these for several years? I’m wondering if they stain like siding does and need to be powered washed.
[email protected] says
I am not sure! But I would think that they would…
Mari says
Love the way it’s turning out! Super exciting,! We did the same shaker style in an olive-y grey on our upper exterior and plain siding on our lower exterior for our Craftsman style. 🤗

Oh I LOVE that!! I sure do love Craftsman style~
Wendy says
I think the stairs will be perfect with the white shakes.

The overall look of building can be improved by selecting appropriate colors for your stairs and siding. You already did that great and new siding has made it wonderful.
