Wanted to share a simple Summer tour of our home and 15 Things to get your home Summer ready! From washing windows to creating a summer playlist (which we made for you). We do actually keep a really tidy home. Does not mean it doesn’t get messy, we just tidy up before starting a new project and everything has a place! That is the key to a successful summer, not waisting time cleaning inside or organizing! Just like we have a huge list before Christmas. I think mid-year is a great time to reevaluate what we have going on in our homes. Take a look at what you have, did you use it the first half of the year? If you haven’t, and it isn’t a summer item, I would donate it! And obviously there are fun things to do to maximize summer!
15 Things To Get Your Home Summer Ready!
-
Something FRESH and new on front door
-
Wash outside windows
-
Put away heavy blankets and pillows (if you are low on storage, under beds are a great spot for this!)
-
Lighten up the decor- leave space to breath!
-
Simplify Bedding- it is warmer, we need less bedding
-
Get back yard set up for kids to play outside (see our backyard HERE)
-
Clean-out the fridge and freezer! Make space for food to host summer gatherings
-
Make a Summer Play List (we made a Summer Play List for you below for you!)
-
Summer Bucket List (ours has things like kayak out to the lighthouse, go to a new beach, try a cronut in New York, visit Maine, read a new book etc.)
-
Get Summer Diffuser Blends Going! (I love oils instead of candles, I shared a summer diffuser blend below)
-
Summer Daily To-Do List for you and or kids (see ours below)
-
Go through clothes that you have not worn the first part of the year and donate
-
Change heavy curtains to light
-
Switch out wardrobes in closets (personally we only keep what can fit in our small closets, not clothes are kept anywhere else)
-
Pool bags and towels ready (we keep our ready in my car, ready for the beach!)
Summer Decor Changes-
I took some quick photos of the rooms in our home and wrote what we just did this past week to get ready for summer!
Living Room– switched up the pillows. So easy to find affordable pillow covers and just swap out the covers. I like to find pillow covers at Woven Nook HERE (nestingwithgrace10 10% off) and even just H&M! I did take away one pillow from the sofa. Try it! Make life easy if your kids toss pillows on the floor, get rid of one or two. I started to take things out of the bookcase and move things around, but decided I liked how it was. So I just took things out and gave it all a really good cleaning then put it back. I even simplified my already simple coffee table and just left a plant. We also added a basket to the floor full of books to encourage reading!
Master Bedroom– Changing up the center pillow to a pink one I already had (from IKEA). And I took off the extra throw. I do still like the duvet at the end of the bed. We sleep with it. I like the weight. And a good duvet insert will be cool in the summer and warm in the winter (we have THIS one).
Finns Room– We went through a donated any toys he has grown out of. We have five storage bins and sort through them when they get too full. Easy way to monitor it.
Girls Room– we went through their clothes quickly and donated any that didn’t fit or wear. Also sorted their books that they had read or outgrown. Cleaned up really well (went through junk drawers too!).
I cleared off the top of the girls dresser. There were some baskets on top and they were basically empty. So I declutter and made a bag of toys they no longer use to donate. Now that the dresser is a clear, flat surface, things could accumulate there. BUT it also makes it really easy to say “put away everything on that dresser at the end of the day, it should remain empty.”
Family Room/Guest Room– I want to just point out the fuzzy throw pillow on this sofa and the throw. Even though I said on my top 15 things to do for summer was to put away throws and wool pillows, it is not a rule. Just a guideline. I personally really like texture. So I left them! Do what works for you!
The tea cart and desk are basically clear flat surfaces. With an exception to a plant. This works without feeling unfinished because the plants are large statement pieces! And we do have a lot of guests coming in the summer. So a simple space is important.
Kitchen– We have our bucket list ready for summer and a list for the kids to check-off for their summer to-do list. They aren’t “chores” they get paid for. These are things that they need to get done to be productive little humans. Just like parents have things to do before we can take off to there beach, our kids have things to do. Our summers are typically task driven in the morning and Finn gets a nap then we play in the later afternoon. Do what works best for you is my suggestion. And stick to it. (You can print our Summer-to-do list HERE and find our Dry Erase Calendar HERE and must-have THESE thin dry erase markers)

Ok a couple of things, I’m so excited you shared a playlist! Always looking for some good new ones. And two, I’m so happy you shared that comment this morning about less is more! I was really disappointed when we weren’t able to move into a bigger house (for about 4 more years actually) , but you’ve really pushed me to work with what I have and to make everything have a purpose!! ♥️♥️ Thank you so much for sharing & all your wonderful ideas! Hands down, fave blogger!
Thank you so much Jamie!!
And hopefully the playlist worked for you?? Some said they had issues
Trying to freshen up for summer and love the ideas and reminders to change out pillow covers…I still have some furry ones out! eeek!
Can you give some information on Finns bedroom ceiling design? Is it wall paper? How hard was that? I’m trying to do a boys room but want to leave the walls the light gray that they are and add something to the ceiling or a stripe. ..also To The Moon and Back sign..too cute! Do I have to make one or do you know where you purchased it at? Etsy maybe?
My playlist worked! Yay! Thank you!
Hi. Do you have a blog post on your breakfast nook/dining space? I searched, but only found you original reno post, before the bench seating was installed. Did your hubby build it? Thank you!
