Little tour of our walk-out basement in Utah we built in 2008. I love how light the walk-out made our basement and that we could easily entertain and walk right out to the backyard. One thing I didn’t love was that when you were upstairs we were far away from the backyard to watch the kids play, it is a trade off.
I used a large 8×10 rug in a bright color since my sectional and carpet were neutral to add a pop of color and ground it all. Rugs add so much to a space, and are essential (Yes, even on carpet, I get asked that all the time, especially by men). Make sure to use the right size of rug for your room. You want the legs of your sofa to be on the rug. If you notice in my space the rug is under the sectional and side chairs it doesn’t have to go under the entertainment console, but you want it not too far away. The same goes for your dining table, you want your chairs to be on the rug and ideally even when you pull out your chairs. If you can’t decide on the rug size tape it off with painters tape to get a better feel. Most of the time in a large family room or dining you need an 8×10.
You can find the rug I used HERE from Surya Rugs.

This piano was passed down to me from my Great Great Grandma. It was a worn dark oak finish. I repainted it with Annie Sloan chalk paint. I used Paris Grey. It was so easy to use, I had wanted to paint it for a long time and thought it would be a big project, to my surprise it only took me a couple hours total. I was happy with the results. I did two coats and then applied the clear wax. You can see the brush strokes, I feel like it goes with the style of the old piano.
We used reclaimed wood from the railroad ties from the Great Salt Lake on the ceiling. I wanted to do something to define the kitchen space in my basement. The tea cart and ladder are both vintage finds. Pendant lights are from Ikea, you can find them HERE and they are only around $30!
I used tense rackets, baseballs and books all from antique stores. Some baskets are filled with games and items we play with, I think those make some of the greatest accessories.
Paint is from Benjamin Moore-Limesickle 2145-50
I love what you did to your basement. I like the designs that you used, and the color combinations are great! I'm sure your kids love this too, and I guess they are always having a great time here. After all, who wouldn’t love to spend time in a nice Cadbury basement? Good job, Brooke! 🙂
