Family Room- New Bigger Rug and Chair Swap

Sometimes you get the room exactly right from the start, and other times it takes living in the space to realize how you really use it. For our family room it was the second one, it took about a year and a half to realize we could make a few changes to work better for our family. The first change was getting a larger rug and the second change was swapping the chairs to swivel chairs we already had. Those two changes made a big difference in how the room feels and functions. Ready to see our new and improved family room?

This photo was taken basically right after we moved in, November 2021. I was in LOVE with this room and this photo, felt I nailed it. Now looking at it the rug could have been sized up and turned to run the opposite way.

But we were worried about cutting into the walkway and the french doors to the backyard. After living in the space, we realized there was plenty of room to push the sofa back a little and get a larger rug!

Family Room New Rug-

Here it is! With the sofa pushed back (we did swap the green velvet sofa against the windows, and got a new slipcover Plum Sofa, it has a taller back than the light one we had before). We even added a wood bench to the back of the sofa, that faces the kitchen, we probably sit on that bench more than the sofa’s!

We went from an 8×10 rug to a 9×12. I love this set-up much better! I did love the light rug we had, we kept it and moved it downstairs to our game table area. Decided I wanted to try a darker rug in here. I kept going back to this rug from Rifle Paper Co. Finally pulled the trigger and so happy I did!!! It is gorgeous and grounds the space.

Still playing around with the accessories and pillows, but quickly snapped some photos before we left on our trip to Italy. I did move that large vintage lamp to the Marble Side Table and love the size of it with the Audrey Ficus and rest of the room.
Also if you go back up to the the before photo, notice how much bigger our Audrey Ficus is from November 2021! I just put it in that new large pot this week (I found the pot locally at Cactus and Tropicals).
Another change was swapping the sherpa chairs to these Swivel Chairs that were in our basement. A swivel chair just works so much better with the space. Easier to get in and out of the room and turn towards the kitchen for conversation or to the TV that is over the console. Plus they are slightly smaller, better size for here.
Found those plaid throws in December and thought they would just be seasonal, but I like how they pull in the rug colors up to the Swivel Chairs.
I thought about doing a larger coffee table in here, but prefer a little more open space. A round coffee table works great with the swivel chairs too. I also prefer the wood to an ottoman, a spot to put a drink, plant, games and books!
