My sister-in-law just moved into a new home about a month ago. She reached out to me asking what wallpaper I would choose for her family room and how to make her new house feel like a home. Because it can be hard to get a new house to feel like you and a place you like to be! I am sure a lot of you can relate. I offered to help her when we came in Utah for Christmas. I decided to partner with The Home Depot to help her and her family love their family room, the area they spend the most time. Little changes go a long way. And it was NOT bad before, just not cozy like she was hoping. But wallpaper, the right window treatments, plants, new lighting and adding some life and art around her TV made it feel like a new space! Let’s look at the before…
Family Room BEFORE-
Family Room After-
Family Room Wallpaper-
I will break down all the details on this family room makeover. But first was THIS temporary wallpaper. If it looks familiar it is the same wallpaper we have in our home. She loved it so much that she wanted to do it in her home. So we are wallpaper sisters too! I love this wallpaper because not only is it a fun pattern it is also a pretty timeless pattern and color! Find HERE. You can also see how to measure for wallpaper HERE.
Along with the new temporary wallpaper I added some art to either side of the TV. Kept is pretty symmetrical with THESE white frames that she can easily switch up with new family prints. And of course we did the Magic Light Trick, if you are new to me it is a way to add lights to a sconce without doing any electrical work! The trick worked perfectly with THESE black sconces that are super affordable. (You can read more about the Magic Light Trick HERE).
You might notice some LIFE in the room with plants. I think plants are one of the number one things every room needs. This family room would not look like it does without the plants. All of them are from The Home Depot! I personally frequent Home Depot for affordable house plants. (Find my ultimate guide to Houseplants HERE).
THIS blue modern wing-back chair was one piece of furniture we added. She was actually considering getting rid of the stripe chair that she has and putting the blue chair there. But I like how the blue chair next to the tv console creates more of a space for conversation rather then just focus on TV viewing. The door that the chair is next to is to their unfinished basement, that they rarely open.
Family Room Ceiling Fan-
The light fixture they had before was just too small for the large family room. We added THIS Hunter Ceiling Fan. It is just gorgeous in the room! Never thought I would say that about a ceiling fan!
Rug Before-
A simple change of turning the rug horizontal with the TV console rather than vertical fits the space better. And having the rug run horizontal keeps the run from feeling so long. I also personally prefer the TV console to NOT be in the rug, giving the room some room to breath.
Family Room Window Treatments Before-
Before she had small curtain rods on either side of her windows. I suggested two options. We could do a drapery rod that went all the way across each window and do two curtain panels PER window. OR we could frame out the windows and do inside mount bamboo shades, which would look very custom.
You can see what option we went with! Her brother (my brother in-law) is very handy. I suggested that we could just add some wood trim around each window and Kevin and I could help her do that. But their brother took it to the next level! He completely framed the inside of each window and added trim all the way around. I was going to do a blog post on how he did it, but really that would have been an entire separate post! We were so impressed with what he did. I will say he spent 8 hours on the four windows and it cost about $225.
The bamboo shades were also a solution to the sliding glass door too!
The Home Depot carries thousands of on-trend products to fit your style and complete your project! Or looking for a project to start after Christmas! I love that their return policy is so easy. For online orders you can return for FREE to one of their +2,200 stores. No worrying that you are stuck if you want to try something new in your home.

Looks SO great! Any chance you know what paint color her walls are? I’ve been thinking about adding this wallpaper, but my walls are BM Revere Pewter, which is a browner shade of grey. Wondering how the different shades will look together!
McKenzie says
Was wondering the samething. I have BM grant beige and was wondering if it would work with that wallpaper.

Another stunning makeover! Keep doing these please as I find them majorly inspiring! I just love your eclectic style and each room has your “signature” but is really different based on what the homeowner or room’s occupant needs. Every room you’ve done lately is just spot on gorgeous. Thank you for sharing!

Can I be your sister-in-law too???!!! 😉 What an incredible job! The room was nice before but your work made it so much more than “nice”. I love to see what you come up with and so enjoy how unique and different each room can be even when you use your same tips and tricks!!! It’s beautiful.

It’s inspiring and lovely! I really like all the different textures and how it looks cohesively together. I’ve read your post about the magic light trick. But I’ve never figured out yet, where you put the cord from the fixture? Do you cut it off? Or are all the fixtures you use ones w/out a cord?
[email protected] says
Yes, we cut the cord in the back if needed. But actually all of mine never had to be cut! I shared a video on the magic light post on how we do it!

It is comfortable for a tight back chair!!

And it depends on where you are going to use it- not be most comfy to watch a movie but great for reading or chatting!

Love this; would the wallpaper be too bold as an accent wall in a guest bedroom? Any suggestions for a complimentary wall color
Kathy Likens says
This is such a wonderful transformation. Do you think this wallpaper is to bold for a guest room accent wall? What complimentary wall color would you use>?
Courtney says
Absolutely beautiful! I am loving the wallpaper accent walls, I am just not brave enough to do it yet. Either that, or I haven’t found the right spot. 🙂
XO,
Courtney

I think it would be great!! I have cloud cover from Benjamin Moore on my walls with it. Or simply white from Benjamin Moore would be nice!
