Hello from Utah! We are here enjoying summer with the kids and family. Lots of things to do and see. My kids keep me super busy and I don’t have my handsome, helpful Kevin around, so I slow down on the blog. But today I have a really fun Grandkid Bunk Room Makeover that I helped my Mother-in-law do. She actually did most of the labor. I created a design plan for her a couple months ago and she implemented it. So it is kind-of fun to see how it can successfully be done with a design plan and some Marco Polo videos! Let’s look at the before of the bedroom-

Grandkid Bunk Bed Room AFTER-
My kids are thrilled with the after! They can’t wait to spend the night. One of the biggest changes was painting the walls a brighter white. The room does have a window but it always felt a little dark, not a lot of light comes in. That is really important to consider when painting a room, where the sun rises and sets. I had her paint the room in one of my favorite whites, Simply White from Benjamin Moore. It is a soft white, great for large rooms.
Walls- Simply White Benjamin Moore
Wallpaper- My MIL totally installed THIS wallpaper all on her own! First time for her. She did awesome. And it was the kind you have to use wallpaper paste with. THIS wallpaper is very similar and is the peel and stick kind, no paste required and can easily be pulled off the wall without damage to your wall.
Grand Kid Bunk Bed Room Plan-
Always start with a design plan is my biggest tip. If you are like my MIL and like to shop, you still need a plan. She was anxious to get it done and just started to buy random things. I put the breaks on her and had her wait for my plan. In the end it was worth it! No running back returning things or ending up with a room that you don’t really love because you didn’t have an end goal. (read how to create a design board HERE).
I went with a black and white color scheme that both boys and girls would like. Plus black and white is so timeless. After the room was almost done it felt like the room needed some contrast. I added some gold that also pulled in the bamboo shades, THIS gold poof, THIS gold throw blanket and THIS floor lamp all add the right amount of interest and depth.
The chair and 1/2 is awesome for having out and reading. Bonus it doubles as a pull-out bed! There are spots for 6 kids to sleep! You can find the chair and 1/2 HERE and one similar HERE.
She already had the bookcase, but it was white and felt too washed out. So I had her paint it black to pull in the black in the rugs. Also doing all baskets that can hold chalk for the chalkboard, coloring supplies etc. She does have a large walk-in closet that has all the toys for the younger kids. And the chalkboard she has had a long time- I wanted to leave the gold, so that was another reason for adding the gold accent colors.
Another BEFORE of the Bunk Bed Room-
Rug- Changing the rug to the right size and one that had some lighter accent colors made a huge difference! Find the Rug HERE. The rug is from Walmart.com and that is actually where I find a lot of my rugs! They are so affordable and they have such a great variety. I had ordered two for my home and it was really easy to send one back that didn’t end up working out. Love that they make it easy to shop online.
All of the beds now have Beddy’s Bedding (you can find on my Shop my Home Page and a discount code HERE). I added in a mix of pillows, love THESE $11 black kidney pillows with wood buttons.
I also added THIS floor mirror to balance off some light and height. And the kids like to dance in front of the mirror too (totally normal!).
Plants always breath life into a room, plus they purify the air! Just make sure if they are in a room out of sight that you pick one day a week to remember to water them, like Water Wednesday! We found some of her plants locally, but did you know that you can buy houseplants on Walmart.com?! Find some houseplants HERE from Walmart.
My kids are sleeping over on Thursday and it can’t come soon enough!!! Hope you enjoyed the tour. And big pat on the back to my MIL, Karen who followed the plan perfectly!!!

No link for those gorgeous leather ottomans?
Sorry! HERE
LOVE it!!
It looks amazing!! I want that room!! love it!
I purchased this rug after seeing your MIL room……. gorgeous! I love my new rug! What I don’t understand is the nuloom rug with the exact same print that you just posted from Amazon at a MUCH less price, saying you got the rug from there. Even without the Amazon sale it was much less. I purchased from Walmart because that’s where you said you got it from. How can these 2 different companies have the same print?
yes! Most companies sell the same products. I bought mine from Walmart. But it was not made by walmart- by nuloom. Nuloom sells to stores all over. Sometimes stores offer discounts and I can not control when that will happen- nor do I ever know.
