I think this might be one of my favorite bedroom makeovers ever! And for one of my favorite people ever…my sister! We made over her master bedroom for her birthday. I know, we set the bar high for birthday gifts now! Sorry about that. She was proud of herself for getting the laundry cleaned up off her bed and floor, can anyone relate?? We had to help her and make sure it didn’t continue to be a dumping zone. If you love your bed and bedding doesn’t it make you want to make your bed everyday? Are you ready to see the new bed?

Master Bedroom Before and After

What do you think?? The first thing I picked for the bedroom was the bed! I had envisioned a canopy bed because of their pitched ceilings. This was actually my first time ever using a canopy bed!

My sister said when she was younger she had always wanted a canopy bed! I had no idea! It really is so pretty. I love the details of the bed, it looks wood but is actually metal. It will hold up nicely!

I knew I wanted to make a big statement with the walls. I also knew I wanted them to be dark. I love this paint color Intrigue from Benjamin Moore (I had it matched at The Home Depot and used my favorite BEHR Marquee in a flat finish). It’s so moody! Complimented with the right bedding and accessory colors makes for a cozy and sophisticated room. Let’s chat wall details.

First, we added board and batten to the wall with just 2 inch trim pieces from The Home Depot (we got 8 and 10 foot options). We applied the wood pieces directly to her wall, since it wasn’t textured at all. Just used a nail gun, no glue. (THIS nail gun worked great).

With the pitch in the ceiling, we wanted continual trim along the top and sides. The angels were a little tricky. They did 2 inch molding all around the top of the walls butting up to the ceiling. And in the corners of the two pitched walls. The boards are spaced about 17 inches apart. I DID NOT want a wood piece going right up the center in the tallest point. It helps to use painters tape to quickly measure and adjust.

After all the 2 inch boards were hung (all pieces hung with 2 inch brads using a nail gun), they caulked around each piece and filled in any gaps and imperfections. Then, the walls and ceiling were ready to paint! The ceiling needed to be brightened up with a fresh coat, I like Pure White.

Finally the walls were painted! We also painted all the outlet and light switch covers the same as the wall color to blend in. I am in love with the transformation!

I wanted the room to have a more vintage look so we shopped a local thrift store. We found so many treasures! Both nightstands are thrifted and the art.

This dresser had such fun detail knew I wanted it for a side table because there was a lot of space on either side of the bed. I also liked how the wood balanced out the white bed and dark walls.

The smaller nightstand was also thrifted, the wood tone matched the one on the opposite side. Although this nightstand is smaller, it was the right height. I did matching smaller scale lamps that would fit both nightstands. In the empty space next to the nightstand, I filled it with a plant. Obviously:) For the photos I used a fiddle leaf fig (we already had) but plan on getting a snake plant that will do better with low light.

PS- Find all the bedding details on this blog post.

We used this same black curtain rod she had, but raised it about 6″ to add height to the room. See the difference?!

I have used this rug before and knew it would be perfect in their master bedroom! I love that is looks like a vintage rug, lots of pretty muted colors depending on the lighting.

Isn’t this view so pretty?? I am so happy we had enough time (and help) to do the board and batten all around the room!

My sister and brother-in-law are so happy with it! They said they don’t want to move anymore. Funny how making the most of what we do have, makes us love it for what it is!
