It was sister makeover month! My Irish twin Brittany (born the same year and we are the same age for two weeks! Bless my moms heart) was in desperate need of a home office, she works from home and is my right-hand girl in my business! She even had an empty bedroom ready to transform. It just felt too overwhelming to find a place to start. Can you relate? Oh where oh where to start in a project?? Ask your sister for help 🙂 Ok, not everyone can do that….so I say, start with a design plan!
Thank you The Home Depot for sponsoring this post
Home Office Design Plan-
First, I like to start with the main pieces in a plan, or it could even be an inspiration item. Maybe you found wallpaper, a pillow or a rug that you want to have in the room. Design around that item. I knew we needed storage in the room, so the gold bookcases were my starting off point! Then I found the green velvet desk chair and the plan took off!
Home Office Before and After-
What do you think of the change?? When we do a before and after photo it looks like we just waved a wand! Not the case. Projects take time, even when I do them. First thing we did in the room (after we had a plan) was remove the old carpet and lay down wood floor. They had already started replacing the carpet with wood throughout their home, this room was next on the list.
They already had a wood plank wall, we just painted it a brighter white. Pure White from Sherwin Williams. Then wallpapered the remaining walls in Ditsy Black from my wallpaper collection.
This writing desk is so cool!! Can you believe I found it on thehomdepot.com?? I was debating between a white desk or this darker desk and went with the dark to contrast the walls. The white desk had gold legs and it felt too “matchy” with the bookcase. I wanted her home office to feel boho vintage.
The rug looks very vintage too. I went with a flat weave, which is important to consider with a desk chair. (Find the rug here).
The desk legs are really neat, it is a great quality desk! Love the simple details of the rounded corners too.
The Gold Bookcases were such a great price (under $300!) for such a big statement piece. I did two, side by side, to fill up the wall. Home Office Tip- whatever is behind the desk should be larger in scale. Plus she needed storage!
To make the bookcases feel taller I hung these Gold Frames and put a Digital download inside (info on art here). Very affordable way to add art!
Baskets are your best friend when styling an open bookcase. They offer storage and can make the bookcase look cohesive when you repeat the baskets in several spots. That is really my best shelf styling tip- repeat texture, color and items in several spots.
This chair is so comfortable!!! If you don’t have the right desk chair you aren’t going to want to sit and do any work! Love that it adjusts and the arms aren’t in the way at all. The green velvet just adds the right amount of fun!
No office is complete without a calendar and plants. I used the last gold frame (they come in a set of three) and printed out a beautiful prayer art. (My 9 yr old nephew loved the space and started playing ” work office” filling out his “schedule”).
We added these ottomans to create a cozy spot to sit and I like how it repeats the velvet texture. You know, for all the interviews she will be holding with her kids 😊 She practiced on Finn….
Went over well. He agreed to work in exchange for toys.
A basket for a snake plant (ps- I get most all my plants from The Home Depot, best selection and price) and a basket for trash. Thrift stores are always a good place to check for glass and containers…the filler pieces for bookcases you don’t want, or need, to spend a lot on.
We did the hack on the window with electrical tape, and painted around the frame to make it look like a black metal window. It looks really great in person too! We did two curtain panels on either side of the window, they are a deep navy velvet (find details on curtains here).
My sister absolutely loves it! And it has already made her way more productive! She told me while she works her boys pull up an ottoman to color, do homework or help with projects. I’m so happy it’s a functional space they can share!

Could you please talk about how you did the electrical tape around the window? I definitely want to do that. This room is amazing!!

I just basically put the electrical tape over the white panes and painted the sides with paint that works on vinyl and wood! I got the idea from someone else, https://www.instagram.com/mallorynikolaushome/

This looks great! A couple questions: Where did you get the macrame plant hanger? And any tips on the curtain panels from IKEA (RITVA) they usually come in super long sizes so how do you get the bottoms to not looked bunched at the bottom (besides getting them hemmed)?
[email protected] says
I just kind of tuck them under and bunch them… we could hem but probably won’t since it looks fine.
the macrame hanger is from here- https://shop.magnolia.com/products/flora-macrame-hanger?variant=30350205321267¤cy=USD&utm_medium=product_sync&utm_source=google&utm_content=sag_organic&utm_campaign=sag_organic&gclid=CjwKCAiA57D_BRAZEiwAZcfCxRxunkMB9Ik959nBMPJ96BWaxdA4kEO0c0rdig1cLKrGX6bcmPiBABoCBe0QAvD_BwE
