I have a little story for you about little porch update we did.
I can remember right after I had Finn (my parents were in town and listening to this conversation so they can totally vouch for me) I said to Kevin we should paint our cement steps white and add pebble rocks to the walk up! He said “no, that sounds like a bad idea.”
Fast forward to one week after that conversation and we are staring at our newly painted cement steps. A man walks by us and says “WOW! What a difference painting your cement steps made!”
Thank you Sir! Perfect Timing.
All I had to do was look at my husband and he knew to NEVER ever question an idea I had again!
I wanted to follow up from my post on Monday about our summer porch changes and share how we painted cement steps. We painted them one year ago in a bright white. Now one year later they were chipped from all the snow shoveling and the ice-melt that got left on the steps.
We went to Home Depot and asked the specialist there how to make the cement paint last longer and they gave us these tips-
Tips for painting cement-
- Clean the steps really well.
- Make sure the steps are completely dry before painting them.
- Prime the steps before painting them with a cement primer (this will prevent chipping).
- Paint with a cement paint. We had them mix the exact color we wanted, we used Valspars Ultra White. We used less than a gallon of paint for the steps.
- Apply paint with a synthetic roller that has some texture to speed the process up.
- They recommended mixing in a non skid floor additive to prevent the steps from being too slippery after painted (you really couldn’t tell this was added in).
Here are some of my favorite ideas for painting cement from front steps to patios.
