Parents Kitchen Remodel Reveal of Open Shelves

For my parents kitchen, we had originally planned closed cabinets all around the kitchen. But, the cabinet piece next to the sink was too big. So open shelving it is! My mom later told me that she secretly wanted open shelving somewhere but didn’t want to ruin my “creative design”. Happy accident! I am all about decorating with things that are functional. So I like to buy the cutest item of what I need. I’ll show you what I mean, and how I styled her open kitchen shelving.

Let’s chat about the open shelves! We used these brackets, and shelving we had from our house we didn’t need. We screwed the brackets in with toggle bolts and applied construction adhesive to the back part of the brackets, the part that goes against the wall.

Electric Tea Kettle and Toaster Set– We use our electric kettle all the time! Heats up super quick and love the matching toaster. Very vintage looking.
Round Charcuterie Board– I think charcuterie boards a kitchen must, adds texture to a kitchen and can be used to serve food off of.
Square Charcuterie Board– Have a couple different shaped charcuteries makes for cute decor when not in use!
Glass Ice Bucket with Tongs– How cute is this ice bucket?! So classic and will be so nice when entertaining. I like that it comes with tongs for the ice.
Grey Dinnerware Set– I picked this color because if we want to use these in my moms kitchen on open shelves they will match the flooring so cute, and stand out against the green tiles.
Rattan Caddy-I love to buy things that are functional and that we can also display. And this is one of those things!
Wicker Tea Cart– I love a tea cart, I’ve always had one in or at my house. Cute statement piece that is great for entertaining but used for extra storage in the meantime.
Black Matte Flatware Set– A set for 4 people, love the matte look and durable set!
Expandable Silverware Organizer– These organizers are so nice because they fit in most standard drawers but then you can also expand! Love the bamboo look too.

Then we measured and cut the wood for the shelves to fit the space how we wanted. The first shelf is 25 1/2 inches from the counters. In-between the shelves there is a 12 inch space. You want to make sure you have plenty of space for items under and above each shelf.

I started decorating the shelves by placing items that are similar and would be used as height and layers, this was the cutting boards for me. This tall cutting board to fill in the space above, and the round cutting board for a different shape below. They will be so cute for charcuterie boards or just to use for cutting their fresh garden vegetables.

Then, the dinnerware.I chose the grey color because it brings out the color of the flooring. The plates on the shelf make it easy to grab for use too. I have these cute cups, they are a recycled glass cup and I love them.

I love adding art to a shelf! Adds a lot of color and layers, breaks up the background/tile behind the shelf. I found both art pieces vintage shopping, always keep a look out!

I like to stick to colors that are similar and play well off each other. This cake stand on the counter pulls in color and texture with the cutting boards. On the cake stand I placed items that she will use often. A cute ceramic pitcher (vintage shopping) and oil jars. All using similar colors. Love how this green oil jar pulls in the tile behind.

Always adding in plants! I like to use plants that have leaves hanging down, having leaves reach the next shelf really connects them. This plant is called a lipstick plant.

Lastly, we hung these cute pear mugs. We could use on the shelves too. Because our shelf started a little higher than the cupboard next to it, the mugs are perfect to fill in the space. And by hanging them, it creates more space for other items on the shelf. Using screw hooks (mug hooks) we screwed them under the shelf, we measured the distance of the mugs and what we wanted the space to be. We just placed tape where the hook would go.

Under the cute new shelves, in the drawer, I added this expandable silverware organizer. Love the bamboo matches perfect and you can adjust to fit the space. Filled it with this set of flatware. Wanted to keep in our color scheme so chose the matte black to match the other black accents.
