Fireplace Remodel- Modern to Cozy Cottage with Story Tiles

When we remodeled our 1950’s home 5 years ago, there were a lot of decisions to make and I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to do with the fireplace in our family room and bedroom. Inspiration hadn’t come and I didn’t focus on it. So we just had our gas insert framed in. We ended up having leftover tile from our bathroom floor, we had it added to the fireplace surround. It was fine. I never loved it. I wanted more shape to the framing and just let it be. Fast forward to a couple months ago I verbalized to Kevin that I didn’t love the fireplaces and wanted to change them up. He was onboard and helped me get it started.

With the family room and dining room change I noticed it even more. It felt dark, and I didn’t love how the fireplace was so high off the floor.

So in love with the fireplace after!! I never felt that way about the previous fireplace. It makes me think, how many things do we keep as is, because it’s fine, and it works, but we don’t love it. Obviously it is rare to be able to do everything on our wishlist at once, but creating a dream list and looking for inspiration is a great place to start!

Family Room Sources-

My starting off point was the Dutch Story Tiles I found locally at Heirloom Art Company. I knew they would be perfect for our fireplace! We painted the mantel and wall blue to match the rest of the blue we had in the room, Kittiwake from Farrow & Ball. The hearth we went with a matte porcelain slab, 12 mm thick so it sat flush with the wood floor. The gas fireplace insert looks much better on the floor, more like a real fireplace and less modern.
We worked with our friend Marshall Bowcutt to do this project. They demoed the gray tile that was on the fireplace, took out the ledge, lowered the fireplace, and added surrounding wood trim. Nick Sommer built the most gorgeous mantle, I couldn’t love it more!!! (Art over fireplace- Rothenburg ob der Tauber)

We have been loving the family room swap! If you missed it, we used to have our dining room in here. Now it feels so cozy and our dining room is perfect right by the kitchen.
We did get this new sofa (in amethyst) and LOVE it!!! The size is perfect in this spot. We have these sofa toppers to protect the cushions from the dogs, plus I love the added pattern.
