Classic Plaid & Bold Red: A Teen Boy Bedroom Reveal

There is something so fun about designing a room that feels completely personalized. Before we started this makeover, I asked Hudson what he wanted most in his new room. Without hesitation, he said, “Wallpaper!” He also loves soccer, so we knew we wanted to incorporate that into the design in a way that felt cool and personal without making the room feel too themed.

Bedroom Before

One of the biggest changes we made was removing the window box that came with the house. While I understand the charm, it just wasn’t being used the way it was intended. Instead, it became more of a catch-all for random things and took up valuable floor space.

Bedroom After

The goal was to create a room that felt organized, functional, and fun for a teenage boy. We did keep the existing ceiling fan since it was already new and fit the space perfectly. The first thing we added was wallpaper, of course! We chose a neutral plaid that feels classic and timeless. I love the soft mix of colors, especially the pop of blue. It gives the room personality while still feeling mature enough that he’ll love it for years to come.

A Bold Facebook Marketplace Find

I searched Facebook Marketplace until I found the perfect dresser that fit this space. We painted it a bold red, Rave Red from Sherwin Williams. We love the statement it makes.

We kept the dresser styling simple and personal by layering a bulletin board, a small plant, his trophies, and a few favorite books. Above we hung cafe curtains with this rod and these clips. There were no curtains in his bedroom before. He’s on the 2nd floor, privacy isn’t an issue, and he sleeps fine with the sunlight.

Cozy Layers

For the bed, we chose a beautiful navy upholstered frame with cream pinstripes. I kept the bedding simple and layered, mixing warm earth tones with pillows and fluffy inserts to create that extra cozy feeling. Cozy is always the goal around here!

We started with a cooling mattress pad for extra comfort and protection, then added crisp blue-and-white striped cotton percale sheets for a classic look. The duvet is a warm wheat color with a soft mini waffle texture that adds beautiful dimension while keeping the room feeling relaxed and cozy. We paired it with our favorite extra-fill duvet insert to give the bed that full, fluffy feel.

At the foot of the bed, we layered a cream waffle-weave quilt with subtle diamond stitching for even more texture. Finally, we finished it with oversized cream Euro pillows (inserts), plush sleeping pillows, and one simple accent pillow. Looks so inviting!

Custom Soccer Artwork

Above the bed hangs one of my favorite details in the room, a soccer stadium painting (nesting15 for 15% off) created by my incredibly talented friend, Lindsey. She painted it specifically for this space, that everyone can now order a print or canvas of! It’s the perfect way to celebrate his love of soccer without making the room feel overly themed.

In The Details

On each side of the artwork, we installed masculine wall sconces. I love adding bedside sconces whenever I can. They create the perfect reading light and make the room feel so much cozier than relying on a bright overhead light.

I already had this wicker desk (similar), and it ended up being the perfect fit in his room! I love mixing textures, and the wicker adds just enough warmth to balance all of the darker tones in the room. This green upholstered swivel desk chair is such a fun addition to the room! It’s both stylish and practical. A spot he’ll actually want to sit and do homework, play games, or hang out.

Above it, we hung a uniquely shaped bulletin boards (wood push pins) that’s both practical and fun. It’s the perfect place to pin photos, schedules, game tickets, or favorite memories while adding another layer of personality to the space.

I love the pop of red the Swiss Cross canvas art (nesting15 for 15% off) brings to the room! It adds just the right amount of bold color and ties in beautifully with the red dresser, creating a fun focal point while keeping the space feeling timeless. Green Lamp // Blue Radio // Storage Box

On the other side of the bed, we added this cute blue oval nightstand. I love the soft shape, the drawer for hidden storage, and the little red cubby. On top, we styled it with a tan cordless, waterless diffuser. I love adding a diffuser to every bedroom! Hanging on the wall above is another subtle nod to his love of soccer, a vintage-inspired USA Men’s Soccer pennant.

Across from the bed, we added a cozy brown windowpane fabric storage ottoman for extra seating and hidden storage. Above it, black accordion wall hooks create the perfect landing spot for jackets, backpacks, and hats, while a framed photo of FC Barcelona’s stadium, his favorite soccer team.

To ground the space, we layered in a chunky white wool rug. I love the warmth and texture it adds underfoot, and it softens the room while tying together all of the navy, cream, wheat, and wood tones.

The Finished Room

I absolutely love how this room came together. It’s organized, timeless, and full of thoughtful details that reflect his personality. Most importantly, it feels like a room he can grow into for years to come. It’s comfortable, functional, and, of course, extra cozy!
