From Bunk Beds to Dream Beds: A Shared Sister Bedroom Makeover

My friend Sophia’s girls share a bedroom, and before the makeover it was filled with bunk beds, concert posters, stickers, and years of fun memories. Our goal was to maximize the space, give each girl her own cozy bed, and create a colorful room that felt personal to both of them (with a few fun nods to Taylor Swift) while still leaving plenty of room to grow. I think we nailed it!

So cute! This room turned out to be the sweetest space for two teen girls. The first thing we tackled was the wallpaper! We covered the entire room in this beautiful light blue rickrack pattern.

Vanity wall, I ended up ordering two of these vanity units and just using one dresser. It worked out perfectly for both girls to have a spot to sit and get ready at the same time or do homework.

Layering the Foundation

Next came one of my favorite parts, layering in the rug. This stand out blue floral rug adds so much depth and helps pull all of the colors together. It creates the perfect foundation for the entire room.

Cozy Daybeds for Each Girl

Instead of bunk beds, we gave each girl her own daybed on opposite walls. Kevin built these, and they were surprisingly simple to put together!
I absolutely love the black check detail. They’re charming, timeless, and such a great price. To make each bed feel even cozier, we hung these beautiful blue plug-in wall sconces above each one. I love that they add soft lighting for reading or winding down at night without having to hardwire anything. They’re such a simple addition, but they make each side feel warm, inviting, and like its own little retreat.
The girls immediately picked which side they wanted, and underneath each bed will be used for extra storage (although you could easily add a trundle if needed).

Making the Coziest Beds

You all know this is my favorite part! We started with a cozy mattress pad for extra comfort and protection before layering on beautiful blue floral sheets. I skipped the top sheet and used an extra fluffy duvet insert with this gorgeous white cover trimmed in blue scallops.
Instead of making the bed traditionally, I folded the duvet into thirds and then in half at the foot of the bed. It keeps those beautiful scalloped edges visible and makes the bed so much easier for teenagers to make every morning.
Each bed was finished with sleeping pillows, a pink scalloped trim euro pillow (insert), and a pink and green accent pillow (inserts) for the perfect pop of color.

Meaningful Artwork

One of my favorite parts of decorating is choosing artwork that reflects the people who live there.

The Dresser Corner

Between the beds, we found just enough room for a vintage dresser. It simply needed a fresh coat of Sulking Room Pink by Farrow & Ball, leftover paint from another project. And it completely came to life. I added these swan knobs to complete the look! The cream curtains with the green wavy trim were absolutely perfect and tied everything together beautifully. (favorite curtain rods)
We topped it with a rubber tree from my own house (pot), a tall scalloped lamp, a favorite family photo, our must-have diffuser (made extra fun with a disco ball!), and one of my favorite colorful trays for layering.

A Double Vanity for Two

One of the biggest improvements in this room was replacing their tiny vanity with a full double vanity. Now both girls have their own place to get ready at the same time, and it doubles as a homework desk. Vanity // Vanity Stools // Memo Boards // Lamps // Vanity Mirrors // Wall Shelf // Wall Pocket

Displaying Their Memories

Instead of covering the walls with posters and tape, we created intentional places for all of their favorite things. Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me // Notebooks // Books
A large wall pocket organizer holds notebooks and school supplies, while a floating shelf displays special keepsakes.
Above each workspace hangs a bulletin board where they can pin artwork, saved concert tickets, photos, and important notes.
I love that all of their memories still have a place. They’re just displayed in a more organized way.

The Finishing Touch

The very last thing we added was this oversized cream paper lantern light. Honestly, I wasn’t sure we even needed it. But the moment we held it up, the entire room changed. It softened the space, added warmth, and made everything feel even cozier. Sometimes it’s those final little touches that make a room feel complete.

I absolutely love how this shared bedroom turned out. It feels colorful, cheerful, and cozy while giving each girl her own special space. It proves that a shared room can still feel personal, functional, and beautiful. If you’ve followed along for a while, you know my goal is always to make a space better than before. And for me, “better” almost always means cozier! I hope these sweet sisters love this room for years to come.

    What did you do with the other dresser piece from the vanity? Or were you able to just order one dresser and an additional desk piece?
    Looking at something like this for my two girls!
    Love the room, so much inspiration and storage!
