I have a friend, Stacy, who has loads of personality and is so much fun! Unfortunately her home wasn’t reflecting her and she was ready for a change. Back in March, she was over at my house and mentioned she wanted a new sofa and rug for her family room. I like to start with a rug, and I was happy to find one that coordinated with the wallpaper we just added to her kitchen. And our go-to for decor, Target has a new Opalhouse collection, designed with Jungalow, that looks like it was curated specifically for this family room! Ready to see the before and after of her family room??
Thank you Target for sponsoring this post

The family room before was all pretty much the same color. Basically lacking their personality, interests, and style. Over the course of about 6 months we slowly gathered vintage and thrifted pieces. And ordered a few key things. Check out the after….
Colorful Family Room After-

Here she is, the after! Isn’t it such a happy space?! We found both the sofa’s and the coffee table at a local furniture shop. The rug was the first thing we picked for the room, you can find her rug HERE. (similar marble top table from Target HERE).

Lastly, we brought in the decor, which is the icing on the cake! I found the perfect colorful and unique pieces at Target from the Opalhouse designed with Jungalow Collection! I ordered it all online, and it all really was a perfect match. Great quality and such fun style.
Window Treatments

Went with a statement pattern for the windows. These jacquard curtain panels are such nice quality at a great price, another piece from the new Opalhouse designed with Jungalow Collection. I love how the jacquard feels vintage with the velvet sofa.

I doubled up the curtain panels on both sides of each window, they look extra full, and are a good balance to the scale of the room.

Sofa and Pillows

The gold sofa is quite a bit taller than the gray sofa, it actually made Stacy panic that they didn’t look good together. I told her not to worry, we would pull it all together with the magic of pillows!!

Instead of using these large square pillows as floor pillows I used them on the gray sofa to add height. Love how it instantly made the scale of the two sofa’s look balanced. Also this knit throw was the perfect way to pull the colors of the rug up to the sofa too.

I like how this gold pillow adds some pattern with the velvet pillows on the simple gray sofa. Easy way to add a pop of color and even change it out for the seasons!

Can you handle how perfect this embroidered needlepoint pillow is here?? Target does it again!!!!
Picture Ledge

They had made a picture ledge from our tutorial here. Turned out so great! It was slightly too high when they originally hung it, so we moved it down and a little to the right, grouped with the sofa.

Stacy’s parents are from Scotland, so she was thrilled to find the Scotland flag while we were out thrift shopping! I picked up that gold frame too. Perfect way to mix styles, layered with the simple print. “There’s mae place like hame” Stacy said is what her mom sounds like when she says “There’s no place like home” in her lovely Scottish accent.

Accessories and Decor

Plants and good lighting are a must! Found this gold simple lamp at Target, it adds just the right amount of glow.

This cute gold hand was probably one of my favorite pieces from the new Target collection, stacked on top of photo books.

A simple book and a few accessories complete her coffee table. I like to make sure that whatever I put on a coffee table looks good from all angles, and this stripe vase and planter with a Pilea, look good no matter where you sit in the room.

Stacy said she struggled deciding what to do in this look bump out. We tried this sherpa chair, small plant stand, and mirror, and they were the perfect fit! I like how adding another chair actually made the room feel bigger!

Added this console table as a way to define the two spaces, kitchen and family room. Kept the decor really simple with a large plant in this basket, a book with a plant, and a simple wood bowl. These felt baskets will be great storage for blankets and games.

You can see above how she styled her console, she told me she needed help! Biggest advice when styling is less is more and bigger is better!
TV Console

Their tv console felt too rustic with everything else we had in the room and was clashing with the wood floor. I suggested we paint it! At first she was against the idea, thinking she could sell it and buy something different. She was willing to just try it and now she loves how it turned out, and the cost! Looks brand new for only the price of a can of paint.

We went with Dead Salmon from Farrow and Ball (we had it color matched at a local paint shop). I really like how it is a subtle pink and how it pulls in the pink from the lemon wallpaper in the kitchen.

Stacy and her family now have a space that makes them smile because it is SO them! Full of color, fun and life!

So so cute!! Did you do a stick on wood wall behind the tv or is that shiplap?
that is real shiplap!
Love this!
Beautiful space -so fun and colorful! When using paint to cover a piece, do you recommend sanding and sealing? I’d love to use the dead salmon color on my wood dresser.
Is that gorgeous fiddle real or faux? I love how this room turned out so much! I need your help with my living room!
I love this room!!! Sometimes it’s difficult to find inspiration for colorful rooms that still have good design or a certain style. Is the rug not available online? I didn’t see a link in the post.
Can you share a link for that beautiful rug?
Yes, would love to know where the rug came from! I really love it! Everything looks beautiful 😍
