Friends of ours, Joel and Sue recently moved into a new home, after living in the same home for over 20+ years. Joel was a manager of a large estate in Fairfield, and lived on the property with his family in a separate home. Unfortunately he lost that job and the place they called home for so many years. They had to move to a new place. It is the cutest older home with a lot of charm. I met Joel and Sue when I moved to Connecticut 5 years ago, they own a CrossFit in my area. I was planning on trying all the CrossFit’s then deciding what one to go to, but they were both so nice and I ended up joining their gym, no regrets! Kevin and I wanted to give them a house warming gift and for being so great to me all these years. We decided to finish their master dormer bedroom for them.
This is their bedroom “before”. Not a bad before at all. I really like their Iron Bed and the bedding she already had (I linked it all at the end). I actually think it looks like a lot of master bedrooms! A bed, bedding, nightstands, lamps, but no extra finishing details. Sue asked me what rug would look good, since the rug they had from their previous home was too big. So I asked her if we could just do it for them! So here is our “just doing it”….
New rug, curtains, new light above the bed and three new pillows on their bed! Done! It took Kevin and I about an hour and a half to do it all and take pictures (not including the time to shop for a few finishing pieces). And it really doesn’t cost a lot to finish a room! The most expensive part wasn’t even “expensive” it was the $150 rug!
The curtain panels were mine, that I have had for a couple years from West Elm (I don’t see online). We used our favorite Amazon Curtain Rod HERE. We hung it about 6″ above the molding. It really breaks up that harsh line of the dark wood window frame.
We made simple changes to the bedding- folded the gray quilt down (I did put this fluffy duvet insert under it, but not necessary). I put their sleeping pillows flat in the back and put these two euro shams in front with this amazing gray oversized kidney pillow in front (on clearance for $11 HERE!! RUN!!!- PS- I just put 3 20×20 down pillow inserts inside).
ALL rooms need a real plant. They just do. I put a ZZ plant on both nightstands and hung the map of New York (I found it at GoodWill, but from Ikea) on the wall. Very simple and all it needs.
The light above the bed is this solar powered outdoor light. We just cut the cord and glued a magic light inside! Fun little addition to the space. And we used a ceiling hook to hang it!
And we did try this darker rug as an option! It is a gorgeous rug, but it just felt too dark in this bedroom. Even the photos make it appear darker than it is. But it is fun to see two options of rugs! PS- you can use code NESTING60 for 60% off all Boutique Rugs! Very affordable and really nice quality.
We ended up giving them both rugs, I noticed their new living room didn’t have a rug and this one was just to gorgeous to not try there! Love it with her newly painted bookcase (you know I want to get my hands on that entire space!! It is so charming!)
We kept THIS 7×10 lighter rug in here, it really brightens up the dormer master bedroom, cost around $150!!! (use the same code NESTING60 HERE )
We hope they enjoy their new space and now it feel more like home!
All the sources-
- Dark Gray Rug
- Light Rug
- Iron Bed
- Gray Quilt
- Duvet Insert (I put this under the gray quilt)
- Black and White Quilt
- White Euro Sham
- Oversized Kidney Pillow 30×35
- Overhead Light (this is an outdoor solar light, we cut it so we could do the magic light trick)
Beautiful! I love the table lamps! Do you have a link to them?
Home Goods find! Thanks!
Ohh! I love this!! The room is adorable!
Thank you!!
Looks fabulous. I went to the Boutique Rugs website to get the rug but for this makeover did you purchase the Newville light/medium gray rug or the Everett Dark Blue/Denim/Light Gray/White? The link pulls up the Newville light/medium gray but it sure looks a lot lighter than your photos.
So many choices 🙂 I get so many great ideas from your site.
The lighting was really hard in this bedroom- so I did have to brighten it and the rug still looks darker than it is in person. We did the light gray white one!
Do the white shams have zippers? Is the insert included?
They have an opening in the back- and the inserts are separate- I can’t find the exact ones I used available anymore
Looks amazing! How did you secure/hang the overhead light? Would love to do the same but not sure on how to anchor it on the plant hook.
we used wire to keep the cord in place!
