Family Room Makeover at my Sisters- Bye White Walls

My sister Brittany works with us, she helps do projects, amongst countless other things! While she helped add wallpaper to most of the walls in our home she noticed more and more how white her walls were, and how she really wanted to add color to her home! She had been talking about wanting to fix up her basement, so Kevin and I offered to give hit a makeover. From white walls to dark, you won’t believe the transformation! Also by changing the furniture placement how much extra seating she got by utilizing the full room!

Family Room Before-

The family room before was all pretty much the same color and furniture layout wasn’t flowing to welcome you in. Check out the after….

Family Room After-

Isn’t it such a cozy space?! Inspiration for the room started with this wallpaper and then the paint (Rock Garden by Sherwin Williams). People often think dark wall color will make the room seem small. But now the room looks large with lots of character at the same time! And having the sectional on the opposite wall makes the flow of the room better and allows more seating.

Box trim Molding-

Kevin has installed box trim molding before in my friend April’s dining room. This time we were only doing a portion of the wall. First Kevin measured and hung trim around the room 6 feet high. This look is so simple and elegant. Though installing is not simple, the main thing is you have to do is measure walls and try to space all the boxes out the same. we painted the entire room Rock Garden from Sherwin Williams, in matte sheen. The ceiling is painted All White by Farrow and Ball.

Light Fixtures-

There are pops of black throughout the house. I liked the simplicity and size of these back lights.

Window Treatment-

Went with a gingham pattern for the windows. These green gingham curtain panels are such nice quality, love the larger gingham squares on the edge of the panels. The lighter green color pulls out the lighter greens in the wallpaper. Not light blocking, which we like for a family room.
I doubled up the curtain panels on both sides of the window making them look extra full. We hung this black curtain rod 8″ from the window. If possible, I hang the rod anywhere from 6-8″ above the window and about 6-8″ on the outside of window so the panels don’t block the window at all making it appear larger.

Seating and Pillows-

We found her new sectional on Facebook marketplace. Always check there first! This is the Ivory Basketweave Sectional normally sold from pottery barn. She moved her other sectional upstairs or could sell. Light furniture in a dark painted room can also make the room appear larger.

This round coffee table softens up the space, perfect for a small family room. Easy to move around. I like how this velvet woven pillow adds a fun pattern mixed in.
Because we were able to move the new sectional to the opposite wall could pull back the sectional a couple feet to open room and add more seating. Plus the sectional itself seats more people.
We were able to add these Blue Swivel Chairs in front of the fireplace. They are super comfy! We love a swivel chair.
Her boys love that they can swivel around to the tv so they can play their video games. They were already pulling their ottoman over to sit. Now no furniture needs to move!
This large rattan ottoman has cute scalloped detail and nice to have in front of the swivel chairs to put up feet!
She already had the cream high back chairs (similar). I added these cute green and cream linen pillows I had from my house.

Bookcases-

I knew I wanted larger bookcases than they had before, to fill up and utilize the space more. I stopped at a local thrift store looking for a sectional but found a couple different bookcase options.
I landed on these wood and glass cabinets (similar) and love how they pull the browns out of the wallpaper.
Filled the cabinets with books, baskets and accessories I’ve collected. I like to repeat patterns, colors and textures. See how each shelf has a pop of blue?
My sister found this swan thrifting. Cute cordless brass lamp.

Art-

I grouped art over the sectional. Love this Earthy Palette art matching all the colors in the room. Park City train station art my sister had thrifted. And
They all love it so much! Don’t you want to pull out a book and read here too?!
