Have you started adding some fall decor to your home? My favorite place to decorate for fall is our front porch. I have slowly been gathering ideas and thinking what I want to do. And Lola, my mini me keeps asking me when we are going to do it. Maybe this weekend we will start. For Friday Favorite today it is about porches and doormats- because let’s be honest those are a BIG part of the front porch. Agree?
We just got THIS black awning below for our back porch and love it! I always thought we were going to have to build something and was planning on it. Until I saw Young House Love post about this new awning they were installing and where they got it. I swiped up on Instagram and bought it. It took a couple weeks to get in.
When Kevin saw it sitting on our porch he got right to it that night. I don’t even have to ask that guy. He did have some issues with the screws they sent that are supposed to attach to the house and hook the awning on. They were too small and slipped right through the hole. Odd. Thankfully we had screws with a really large head to keep them in. So keep that in mind if you order this too.
Also saw it HERE for cheaper! After the fact. But now I can share it with you I guess!
- I am still looking for a keyless door knob. I found THIS one on Amazon I liked but I got some feedback from some of you that said that the type I picked out could show finger prints and patterns over time since it was a flat key pad. That was such great feedback. I found one that is modern that I like HERE but now I am wondering about getting a keyless lock system with our security system. We do have a security system that is ok, but I would like it to do more. I have heard a lot about Vivint. Any feedback?
- Also trying to decide if we would rather have a screen door rather than the glass storm door. I found some wood screen doors HERE. What do you have? Do you prefer one over the other?
You avid readers (who I love) might notice I moved the rugs from our front porch to our back door! We didn’t have a very nice one back here and I want to switch out the rugs on our front porch. I have been searching for something fun for the front and thought I would share some favorite outdoor rug and doormats with you for fall! Figured you might be on the hunt too!
Fall Outdoor Rugs and Doormats-
Shoes Off Witches paired with – Black 3×5 Rug
Black Jute paired with- Animal Print 3×5 Rug
Black Crow paired with- Buffalo Check 3×5 Rug
Hello Fall paired with- Black and White Stripe 3×5 Rug
Woven Rope paired with Navy 3×5 Rug
Thankful paired with Neutral Diamond 3×5 Rug
I do want to say that investing in a nice base for your front porch is KEY! I love a nice 3×5 rug that if I feel like switching up the top doormat another time in the year it works! Below I have the Black 3×5 Rug with THIS 2×3 Hello doormat.
And I have also had THIS smaller 1’5″x2.5″ doormat and it didn’t bother me because the rug underneath was the right size.
Above is one that a reader shared that I inspired her to try (posted it HERE) and below also!
And I shared the below photo on THIS blog post when talking about making sure to get the right size rug! On that situation I would so something similar to the above door and even a bigger doormat.
I just encourage you to wait and save to get the right thing! I get asked often well where should I start? If your front door needs to be painted then do that first! And I would personally choose getting the right size rug over a seasonal wreath or any seasonal decor. Invest in timeless pieces first.
Hope that helps!
Quick Friday Favorites today. I am working on a bedroom makeover that I am giving to a friend that I will be sharing next week! I hope you have a great weekend.
Ok, I feel like such a stalker cause I noticed the rug switch right away. đ€Ł But I love that combo and even saved for months so I could duplicate it on my porch. The awning is amazing! How cute is it on your door??? đ
That is why I love you!
Looks great!! I want one for my house!
Love the awning! I just got the phantom screen door installed and love it!! I love that it just rolls away when I donât need t!
ok I need that!!
I have a storm door that has a pull-down screen (and the glass disappears), so itâs both!! I love it. đ
Yes, that is exactly what I was going to suggest! We have one by Anderson. Best of both worlds! And I love that if you want, you can keep it locked and feel safe answering the door to a stranger. You can pull down the screen a little bit to have a conversation with a salesperson but you donât have to open your home up and be vulnerable. Close up the glass for warmth, pull down the screen for a breeze. Itâs the best :). Moving soon and weâll be installing another one for sure
We live in the Midwest, have a glass door in the late fall/winter, but swap it out for a screen that fits in the door opening for spring summer! Love it! And many tines, since our front door faces south, I can keep my door open in the winter and let all that beautiful sun light in!!
I was thinking that same thing- we will want it glass in the winter! We could switch it out!
We LOVE our screen door! We recently bought a new house, and within 2 weeks, I was asking my hubs to put up a screen door because I missed ours so much. We live in Texas so it keeps out the bugs, but I can hear the kids playing outside, along with the breeze and the birds. The 2 year old can open it herself and it closes behind her. And it reminds of my grandmaâs house which I love. Loweâs and Home Depot allow you buy a plain wood one and you can choose an insert to buy for the bottom half to give it character. Then you can stain or paint it how you like.
I actually had the same dilemma with my back porch door. I had a dutch door (original from 1941) but we were getting so much cold air in the house. I opted for a door that was completely glass so I can get the full light and still be energy efficient. Best decision we made in the kitchen! Hope this helps and let me know if you need a pic.
We have a screen-away door that I love. Full glass in the winter but when itâs nice, you just slide down the top and itâs a screen. đ Love, love the new awning!
You can have a Vivint install smart home items but you can also control your own system with Samsung SmartThings, etc. There are a few compatible door locks to pick from. I use both Vivint and SmartThings. Vivint items coordinate with their monitored alarm system. Amazon for SmartThings.
We have a 1920’s bungalow that has a really old-fashioned wood screen door, the kind that you close with a “bang.” We LOOOOVE it, because it’s so easy to open and close, and it totally suits the house. It’s also awesome when we have furniture or something big to get into the house, because we can disconnect the screen door’s chain, and then flatten the screen door against the exterior wall, making plenty of room to carry the big item through the porch and front door.
That being said, our front door faces onto a porch, and so we have no need for rain protection. If you’re worried about rain protection, you’d need an actual storm door.
And speaking of porches/awnings… do you think of your new awning could protect a door somewhat? Our back door takes the brunt of all the storms at our house, and we’ve been wanting to build an awning for (ahem) seven years and never got around to it. Also, what did you think of the installation process? I saw some bad reviews for that awning and am worried. But, gosh, it’s cute!
Love all your rug ideas. I use to buy a small rug and never thought twice about layering rugs. This is a game changer! As for the door thing. I have a glasss door on the front of my house and a screen door at the back porch. I do love my screen door and having it open and my pups love it too!! Thank you for always posting handy ideas. Love, love ,love your blogâ€ïž
I have the August lock and loooove it. Itâs not a keypad, it works with your existing hardware and a Bluetooth connection. You can email people virtual one time use or limited use keys they can use to get in. You can assign people their own access, like a cleaner or a kid. It keeps a log of when the door is locked/unlocked and whoâs digital key was used.
It automatically unlocks when you get close to the house. It automatically locks when you leave and when youâre in the house. You can check to see if it is locked from anywhere. You can unlock it from anywhere (incase youâre away and you get a delivery or youâre in the back yard and someone is on their way over.) You donât have to worry about finger prints or areas on the keypad wearing down because you donât have to enter a code. You can set it to alert you when the door is unlocked and so much more!
It takes maybe 2 minutes to install. I got mine on Mercari for a lot cheaper. With a bridge, you can connect to Alexa which I was excited about, but I havenât ever used it and donât know why I would. Hereâs a link. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0752V8D8D/ref=s9_dcacsd_dcoop_bw_c_x_1_w
