A common question I am always being asked is, “How do I mix metals in the kitchen?” We partnered with Delta Faucet to switch out our old kitchen faucet for one with a lifetime guarantee. While I was selecting the finish for our new faucet I began to think about why I chose our original faucet metal finish in the first place. There is a simple formula I follow and I am sharing it today! How I go about mixing metals.
I typically like to mix two to three different metals in my kitchen. There is always a main metal that you have to factor in- the large appliances, meaning the fridge, dishwasher, stove and a microwave (if you have one). We have white appliances, which I selected because our kitchen is only 10×13 and all white makes our kitchen appear larger. The accent metal on the appliances is a brushed chrome with some black rubbed in, so I wanted to make sure to repeat that finish somewhere else.
A great place to repeat the metal on the appliances is with your sink faucet. The kitchen sink faucet is typically in the center of the kitchen so repeating that metal will balance out all the metals in the kitchen. I went with the Delta Trinsic® Pro Single Handle Pull-Down Spring Spout Kitchen Faucet with Touch2O® Technology. I love how the Black Stainless finish complimented the other metals in our kitchen, plus the faucet added height and drama to the space. My other accent metal is gold. I used that metal on the door handles and repeated it in the pendant light. Our countertops are a butcher block they also have that warm gold tone also.
How to Mix Metals in the Kitchen-
-
Select appliances- that metal finish or metal accent on the handles will be one of your main metals.
-
Your kitchen sink faucet is a great way to incorporate the same metal that is in your appliances. Delta Faucet has a great search option HERE. You can search specifically for the metal finish you are looking to match. I highly recommend searching for the metal finish rather than the faucet, that will lead you down a potential spot of picking the wrong metal finish for your kitchen.
-
Choose an accent metal- this will be what you use on your pendant lights and your kitchen hardware.
-
If you have a chandelier in the same room over your kitchen table you could repeat either accent color. The most important thing when choosing a chandelier is that it is different than your pendant. For instance if you have glass pendants you would want to avoid a glass chandelier. Similarly you have all metal pendants you would want to avoid an all metal chandelier. You could do a glass pendant with some metal and an all-metal chandelier.
Below are some examples of ways you can mix metals in your kitchen-
#1- Gold Brass Pendant /// #2- Black Stainless Delta Faucet /// #3- Honey Comb Chandelier /// #4- Gold Handles /// #5- GE Fridge
(Notice how the appliance matches the faucet and the cabinet hardware matches the light fixtures)
#6- Black Lantern Chandelier #7- School House Pendant /// #8- Arctic Stainless Delta Faucet ///#9- Black Latch /// #10- Stainless Fridge
#1- Champaign Bronze Delta Faucet /// #2- Glass and Gold Accent Pendant /// #3- Brass Pulls /// #4- Light Fixture with Shades /// #5- Mint Big Chill Fridge
(Notice how the appliance matches the faucet and the cabinet hardware matches the light fixtures)
#6- Cement and Wood Pendant /// #7- Wood Globe Chandelier /// #8- SMEG Black Fridge /// #9- Bin Pull /// #10-Matte Black Delta Faucet
Hopefully this gave you some easy guidelines to refer to when selecting metals. Remember that is just a guide to get you started. There are always instances where these guidelines are broken and still look great. But 80% or 90% of the time this is what you will see works!
The Trinsic Pro Kitchen Faucet has all the bells and whistles. I highly recommend a Delta, not only because they have gorgeous metal finishes and styles but because of the Lifetime Warranty. This faucet will be one you love forever. I cheeped-out on our first faucet and wish I would have gotten what I wanted in the first place. I always wanted one that was tall and dramatic. But I never new I would want one with a touch sensor! We love the Touch2O® Technology on our Delta Faucet. I can’t believe how I often I go to use the sink and think how happy I am for the touch sensor- when I am on the opposite side of the sink and have messy hands it is great to be able to touch the top of the faucet to turn it on!
Not to mention it is way easier for kids to turn on the water. Lola is just recently tall enough to reach the handle to turn on the water. It was a little frustrating for her to not be able to get her own water unless she pulled up a stool.
I also love the spray shower feature and the pull down- I would never buy a kitchen faucet without those features.
The TempSense™ LED light shows water temperature changing from blue to magenta to red as temperature increases – there are also color coded symbols on the top of the faucet.
I personally would have loved, LOVED THIS Delta Faucet but the Champaign metal finish would have clashed with the butcher blocks gold tones. Next house!
You can find all the great Delta Faucets HERE. They also have everything for a bathroom too. When mixing metals in a bathroom typically your sink and shower fixtures are the main metal.
This post came right on time for me! I have been agonizing over what metal to use for our faucets. I was going to get the gold color delta trinsic faucet to coordinate with the gold hardware I want but didn’t want to go overboard with gold. My appliances are stainless steel and the pendants over the island are glass globes with gold accents. Do you think if I have both sinks in the stainless with stainless appliances and gold accent pendants with gold hardware that would look ok? The table has the same ikea pendant you have but in the black color to match our black cabinets.
Oh yes, that works since your sinks are the stainless! That is a way to bring in the finish of your appliances and to break up the golds! I like that you have mixed up your light fixtures too!! Good work!
Love you kitchen so much and I want those floors! I just read your mixing metals post. Am I to understand I can mix brass and gold? I thought you had to pick one or the other. If you say I can do it, that would be great news because sometimes I can’t tell them apart!🤭
I think you can! I do….but more of the accents. Does that help?
Do you have a source for the brass bin pulls? Thanks so much!
