I can’t believe that we have a master closet!!!! We had a small closet in our “master bedroom” that only my minimal clothes would fit in. And then Kevin had his clothes in his an a small Ikea wardrobe in Finn’s bedroom and his shoes were in Finn’s closet. We made it work for about 4 years. Then we decided to add- onto our kitchen and the entire back of our home about 9 feet back. We made space for a master bathroom and this master closet! Which feels extra fancy to have!!
Below are photos of our separate closets before-
Kevin was actually the one to put together the plan for the Ikea Wardrobe with the PAX Planner. I had an event one night and came home and he had put the plan all together! If you don’t want to try to attempt it on your own (which just TRY it before you give up) you could go into Ikea (when they are open again) and have someone help you put the plan together in the store.
Below is our PAX Plan-
I actually compared a couple different closet organizing systems and the IKEA Pax was by far my favorite. So many great options for storage. I also really like that they have coordinating drawer organizers that fit perfectly in the drawers. The total price for the IKEA PAX system was about $1100. Not bad at all. Very affordable way to go!
I knew I wanted to add some wallpaper, and was thrilled with this black and white simple dot. It will play-off of our master bathroom tile too. The wallpaper is removable wallpaper, it goes up super fast and can easily peel off when you want it down! No damage to the walls.
We ended up adding a washer and dryer to our master closet. We do have a washer and dryer in our basement too. But it will be nice to have two options! The basement laundry I imagine doing bigger loads like bedding, pool towels, sorting large loads etc. Kevin did some research and found that the LG washer and dryer came highly rated. And no, we actually haven’t used it yet. The plumber needs to come and hook everything up. I will give a review once we have had it for awhile.
Finn looking at himself in the mirror while his dad got his shoes on was too cute ♥️
Some of Kevins shoe collection. He is a “shoe horse” as my grandma calls it. He ordered 3 of the KOMPLEMENT pull-out tray for all his shoes (they hold 6 men’s shoes), one drawer holds shoes too- so he could have went with one more of the trays.
You might notice that we didn’t go to the ceiling with the PAX system. We could have added feet and some trim. But decided to use the extra space for baskets, and we are very glad we did. Most of these baskets are filled with my shoes- that are more seasonal. Also the light in this room was more of a splurge, but makes a big statement (Finn said “wow, look at that egg!” haha, find light HERE).
Kevin used the KOMPLEMENT pull-out pants hanger for all his pants and shorts, which works great for his space. I did a drawer for my pants.
I had this mirror in our master bedroom and the scale fit perfect in our new closet! Also love hats as decor too!
This x-base rattan ottoman is just the cutest! I ordered two- one for our bathroom as well. We quickly learned that we wanted a spot to sit to put shoes on or stack clothes as we were putting things away. And I decided to go with this super cozy, soft rug and just the cutest pattern ever! (I will have details on our floors soon in s separate post- it is more extensive).
And I should mention that I do have window shades coming for in here, we aren’t crazy! I did my favorite bamboo white-washed shades and I am going to hang this roller shade (this is a similar roller shade) behind it for extra privacy. *Updated photo with the roller shade below…

House Details- Molding, Shiplap, Paint, Doors, Woven Shades and More!
A room isn’t complete without a plant, am I right??? I have a string of bananas plant here in this macrame hanger.
Kevin ordered clear fronts for 3 of my drawers, which is very cute and a fun way to add some color to your closet! I have all my sweaters in two of the drawers and skirts in another.
We ended up being able to fit two of these baskets on each of the shelves. I have pajamas, comfy pants and shirts mostly in those.
Fun little mini drawer for jewelry and ALL my rings. Ha. I need more rings. (KOMPLEMENT insert pull-out tray)
Most all the drawers we used the KOMPLEMENT gray storage boxes that fit perfectly in the drawers- must have!!!
We use these felt hangers that keep clothes on the hanger, work so well and came highly recommended.
I used two of these taller woven baskets for our laundry soap, dryer ball, linen spray and iron.
One drawer I have socks in this storage container and undergarments, sports bras, swimsuits etc.
In one drawer I didn’t have any storage boxes, and my jeans stand up pretty well. I think if I go back to IKEA I will grab some more KOMPLEMENT storage boxes.
Tips for IKEA PAX Closet System-
- Measure Room then go to ikea.com and create a plan by using the Pax Planner
- Tape off the actual size in the room to get an idea of how it will actually feel
- Try to be really thorough and order everything you need- you can place your order online then you can go pick it all up at once or you can have it delivered for a small fee!
- Don’t forget the cover caps- VARIERA (this is what you can hide all the little holes that are their for shelf and drawer adjustment)
- Also we love the KOMPLEMENT gray storage boxes that fit perfectly in the drawers- must have!!!
- It is much easier to put in than it looks. The PAX Base cabinets took about 2 hours. Then all the drawers too a couple hours too.

This is the post I’ve been waiting for! Thank you for showing so many details! How long did it take to put together and how many swear words did it take?!😉
haha! Like how I left that part off! Ha! Well putting the drawers together were pretty fast and the actual PAX base took about 2 hours. Once you do one it goes in really quick.
This room looks sooo good, Brooke! I love all the details and especially the cool “egg” light! Congrats on the new closet!
LOVE!! I love all of it – the little bench is my favorite! Are you concerned with how much dust the dryer will create? I would love to do a W&D in my master closet one day, curious to know how it goes for you guys.
We did something on a smaller scale in my son’s room when he moved out. We kept a full size bed so we still have two very nice guest rooms. But we ran Ikea furniture around the room, starting with a Pax wardrobe, and filling in the rest with Malm dressers. My sister-in-law (a very “custom” person) actually WRINKLED HER NOSE as she asked me if I liked it. (Her tone of voice suggested we had installed dead rats in the room.) As if I’m going to invest in something I don’t like. And I sure liked the fact that we saved thousands over California Closets, for basically the same storage capability. Some people — am I right?
Love this! Curious if you have an ironing board and if so, where do you store it and when you use it, where do you use it. Enjoy!
Love the closet! Kevin did a great job!
I’ll be interested to hear your washer/dryer review. We had LGs for the past 12 years and I LOATHED them. (I can’t understand all the great reviews. LOL! Maybe we got lemons!) Couldn’t wait to replace them. I hope they’ve improved and you have a great experience with them!
Thanks for all the great information. Do know the dimensions of the space? In the middle of remodeling and working the master bedroom closet.
it is about 7’6″x8’6″! Thanks!!
What is the oil holder on the side of the dryer?

Super cute & efficient space. Well done!
I wanted to makeover our small master closet, so I contacted a custom closet company and was shocked at how much it would cost for a simple install! So we decided to create our own custom built-ins using the PAX system from Ikea!
I love this! what made you choose the drawers for your shoes vs the shoe pull-out tray?
well we weren’t sure exactly how much space we needed for shoes- we could easily switch it up.
