Did you catch my last blog post? We have been working on Patricks (a cutie 9 year old boy) bedroom! If you have been following along you know that we recently made-over Lukes bedroom (Patricks brother). Lukes mom had submitted Lukes room for a local makeover Kevin and I were giving-away, we ended up selecting Lukes bedroom, and we couldn’t leave Patricks bedroom alone! We wanted to makeover his bedroom too. Below is where we last left you on the bedroom status-
Kevin and I went away for the weekend to New York (blog post coming on that). But before we left we spent about 4ish hours cleaning out Patricks room, painting and wallpapering. I bring this up to show that just with a few hours and paint you can transform a space!! It does not have to cost a lot of money. The most expensive part was the wallpaper, which really didn’t cost a lot for such a big impact. $40 a roll and we used about 6 rolls. Also you will notice below how adding a rug over the worn carpet really went a long way!!!!
Thank you Walmart for sponsoring this post
Below is the before photo of Patricks bedroom-
Their home is a small cape, similar square footage to ours, about 1100 square feet. Patricks room is in the open loft space at the top of the stairs. His parents room is right outside his room. I thought it would be really nice to have his bed over in the dormer space where all the toys and keyboard were, it was really just a dump-zone for toys, since it was hard to play in that space. Moving his bed over to where the toys were would also created more of a bedroom for him.
Patricks Bedroom After-
First thing we did was clear everything out!! Rachel went thought it all after and donated things they no longer used. Then we painted all the walls in Behr Pure White. Kevin even painted the fronts of the built-in dresser drawers (which are so nice to have!!!). All of his clothes were actually over there- so it will be nice to be able to get to the drawers easier.
Wallpaper and Paint-
Then my mom and I wallpapered the ceiling to look like real wood. It is awesome!!! I highly suggest wallpapering a dormer ceiling, it adds so much charm! We used a peel and stick wallpaper! You can find it on THIS wallpaper post! It has a lot of texture and was easy to work with. The wallpaper is a peel and stick wallpaper. You literally peel the back-off like you do a sticker and then you smooth it on your walls. But the difference from a sticker is that the wallpaper will easily peel off your walls when you are tired of the wallpaper. And it does not leave any damage to your walls! You can read my full blog post on wallpapering HERE and watch a video!
Rug-
The first thing I found to start the room design was the wallpaper and then THIS rug. The rug is from Walmart. It is super affordable and I like that is is a fun pattern without being too dark for the small space. Also looks great for a boys room, it will transition with him as he gets older. As you know, Walmart has been my go-to for rugs lately! They are really easy to order, come fast and if you happen to not like it, it is very easy to send back!
A rug is really a “must-have” in any room. Even if there is carpet in the room. Imagine this room without a rug, it would be missing something for sure.
Lighting-
With a small bedroom we didn’t have a lot of space for nightstands. Instead I did THESE wall sconces that plug-in. I like how the dark pulls in the dark in the rug too! Great contrast. I found them at Walmart.com too! They came in a pair for under $100, they are super stylish too and a look you won’t get tired of!
A simple basket on the floor also hides the plug and is a good spot for him to put the things he sleeps with. The built-in dressers are close-enough to put books on and an alarm clock.
Bamboo Shade-
Last minute I realized I didn’t order a bamboo shade for his little window. It was hard to see it before, so I forgot about it. Luckily the exact bamboo shade I was going to order I already had on one of my windows. So I gave it to them. THESE cordless bamboo shades are my favorite! I love that they had nice texture to the room and are light filtering. They could put a room-darkening roller shade behind it if they decide they want it darker in there. Walmart is the best place to buy them- I have them all over my house from them.
Bedding-
Patricks bedding is my favorite Zip-up Bedding, I have on my girls bed. I like that Patrick can easily make his bed every morning! Plus it is easy to un-zip for his mom to wash. I put THIS gray $20 throw from Walmart.com at the end of the bed to add some “fullness” along with a fur throw. The pillows are just an eclectic mix of things I had.
Rachel sent me the photo the first night after we had painted and wallpapered. We made sure to set-up his bed so it was ready for him to sleep on that night, even tho the room wasn’t complete. He loved sleeping in his new cozy bedding. We know that Patrick has a unique story and was blessed by so many prayers when he was born. And his sweet parents are so patient and loving to him. Happy that we could help created a place for him to grow-up in! Below you can see where his bed was and now his toys are easier to get to and his keyboard!

An awesome job for an awesome family. I know Patrick will like his new room and I love the wallpaper on the ceiling. It adds so much to his room. You and DH are awesome too for doing this for this family. As I said before, you are both angels in disguise doing a little at a time to help others.
I love everything about this!
I have been trying to find a rug that goes over wall-to-wall carpet in our bedroom. The last two rugs I tried wrinkled horribly and it got worse over time. We could never get them to straighten out. It looks like this one lays flat over the carpet. Do you have any advice for buying a rug that will not wrinkle?
If they go over carpet they have to be a heavier rug- or I have nailed the corners down into the floor board 🙂
