My parents had a room that was not used to its full potential. Can you relate? The bedroom was basically a storage room. Since moving back to Utah I was excited to take over this room and give them an office. Both of them do a lot of work from home and it all ends up on top of the kitchen table (same story at our house) then it needs to be cleared before dinner each night. Needless to say, they needed a home office! I asked them if we could make it over and my Dad had the room cleared out the next day!
Thank you The Home Depot for sponsoring this post
First things first I put together a quick design plan. I wanted to get them a bookcase, two comfy chairs and a round table instead of a desk so more than two could work at once. Wallpaper accent wall was a must to add a pop of character to the room with beadboard on the adjoining wall.
Storage Room Before
My mom said “this room would give me anxiety, and I didn’t know where to start with it”. I think a lot of people can relate. I always say to start with a plan like I did above and as the budget allows, start with walls and floor first then move onto the items that will make the biggest impact.
Home Office After
Now my mom says “she has nothing but joy and peace…thanks to you and Kevin!” Makes us so happy! I know she was excited because she immediately started organizing the baskets we got them in the bookcase. Let’s break-down all the changes….
Laminate Flooring-
The first thing my Dad did after clearing the room out was remove the carpet and lay down laminate flooring. Find the exact floor and rug here, I also found similar flooring here at The Home Depot. My dad really liked the laminate flooring that already had the padding attached to the back. So you could easily install the floor. Total cost for the floor was $350! You can
He said it is “so easy to install!” They actually have this wood throughout their entire main floor now.
You can see the same floor in their bedroom, that is right next to their new home office.
Removable Wallpaper-
We decided to do one of my favorite wallpaper patterns . It is peel and stick removable wallpaper. Very easy to install and also to take down when you get sick of it (which will never be in their case:)).
Even the littlest of helpers can jump in and smooth the wallpaper down.
We installed the wallpaper on two walls in their office, it felt too busy to have it all over. (On this wall we are waiting for more wallpaper to finish the wall and want to do a vintage dresser there and a frame tv with a gallery wall).
Beadboard- Painted Black Magic
Adding this beadboard paneling is a pretty simple project, as long as you have the right tools. It really adds so much to the room.
Kevin used this cordless nail gun to attach the beadboard paneling to the wall, no glue.
My dad did add the wood trim around the windows that really framed out the window nicely and was a nice finishing touch to the bead board.
You can get the beadboard panels in different sizes. We did have to cut ours down. He just cut it with this Corded Circular Saw, we use this for smaller quick cuts.
I took a sample of the wallpaper to The Home Depot and picked my paint color for the beadboard. We went with Black Magic in a flat finish. I liked how it pulled out the darker parts of the wallpaper.
I hung this thrift-store artwork right on the bead board, love the pop and the contrasting color it adds.
Bamboo Roman Shades
My parents office window is 57″ wide, making it hard to find ready-made bamboo shades or roman shades that will fit their window. So we went with two of bamboo shades. I think it looks great and is a budget friendly option! (Find bamboo shades here).
Bookcase
Very happy with this bookcase!!! The ladder is such a fun detail. The bookcase is such a quality piece, for a great price from The Home Depot too! If you didn’t know The Home Depot has a lot of furniture, and decor online that you won’t see in their store.
Filled it with baskets to have more space for storage. Plus the baskets look so good without making the bookcase look too cluttered. (Find baskets and canisters here).
One shelf I added some accessories, a plant, jars for pens and small office items, a vintage spool of twine, vintage art, diffuser and layers books for height.
Plants
I got all the plants at The Home Depot, that is where I get most of my plants for my house too! I loved that cactus for the middle of their round desk and I put it in this resin planter (great idea for the center of a dining table too).
That fiddle leaf fig will be happy by the window! I also found the fiddle leaf fig, sold with that basket at The Home Depot too (found one similar online here).
My mom has had that Dragon Tree for awhile, she said it is one of her favorites and it is very easy to take care of.
And that plant is called a Nerve Plant, found it at The Home Depot also! I left it in the plastic container it came in and just put it on a cake stand for some height.
Desk Table and Chairs
My parents work from home often or they are studying their scriptures or teaching a class via zoom. I knew I wanted to get them a round table rather than a traditional desk. My sisters and I will pop over and work together with them too, so now there are chairs for everyone! And I love that you can leave out a project rather than having to clean it all up before dinner.
And this table is such a quality piece I also found online on Home Depot’s website. It would make a great dining table too!
Don’t you love these rattan chairs?? I do! And my parents thought they were very comfy. Win, win.
They do have a cordless printer we put in the closet and they both work off of laptops.
We need to finish organizing the closet, then I will have to show you it. But we did add these nice closet doors with these handles. They didn’t have closet doors here, so it was a big improvement! (Painted them in Pure White).
Lighting- Lantern Light Fixture
I originally had ordered a much smaller light (my mistake and didn’t check the size). Decided to take the smaller light down and ran to The Home Depot in hopes of finding a new light fixture. Luckily they had this lantern light fixture, perfect scale, but they only had it in black. I love the black, but it felt like too much black in the room. Nothing some pure gold spray paint can’t fix!
My dad hung the light fixture from a tree and I sprayed it down. I then went over it with some Rub in Buff in antique gold to give it some dimension.
Turned out perfect! Also love the round bulbs for a fun, casual look.
Cutie mom and dad enjoying their new home office! We joked that they could serve the “nicer steak dinner” in this back room to their favorite kids while everyone else eats hotdogs at the kitchen table.
