Teen Girl Bedroom Essentials + Lola’s New Bedding

We gave Lola’s room a little refresh with new bedding, and it reminded me how much I love creating bedrooms for my girls that feel like them. And if her new duvet looks familiar…it is! We used the same duvet in Ella’s college room, and I love how completely different it looks in each space. While we were freshening up Lola’s room, I thought I’d share some of my favorite teen bedroom essentials. The things my girls actually use and love in their rooms.

1. Bedding They LOVE

I think this has to be number one. A teen’s bed is so much more than where they sleep. It’s where they read, watch shows, FaceTime friends, do homework and recharge after a long day.

For Lola’s refresh, we used the Cotton Striped Ruffled-Edge Duvet, and I love what it did for the entire room. The stripe is subtle enough to mix with other patterns, and the ruffled edge adds the sweetest little detail.

I’m a big believer in mixing bedding rather than buying one matching set. Layer stripes with florals, checks and smaller prints. Repeat a few colors throughout and it will all come together. We used my Nesting With Grace yellow floral sheet set, and these yellow floral shams for more pattern, and these blue linen euros shams. The goal is a bed they cannot wait to crawl into at the end of the day!

2. A Get-Ready Spot

We originally designed the built-ins in our girls’ rooms thinking they would be desks for homework and projects.Turns out, they’ve become their favorite get-ready stations! A vanity mirror, a chair (similar here) and a little storage for hair and makeup make mornings easier and give them their own place to get ready.

I actually love when a space evolves into what your kids really need instead of what you originally planned for it.

3. A Full-Length Mirror

If you have a teen, you know. A full-length mirror is definitely an essential for outfit checks before school, games and going out with friends. It can also help bounce light around and make a bedroom feel larger and brighter.

4. A Place for All Their Collections

This is a BIG one in Lola’s room. he is my little collector girl and loves her Sonny Angels, Calico Critters and all her little treasures.

Instead of fighting the collections, give them somewhere to live! A wall shelf, glass house cabinet, bookcase or ledge lets them display the things they love without having them scattered everywhere. I think collections are one of the things that make a teen bedroom feel the most personal.

5. Plants

She LOVES having plants in her room. They instantly make a bedroom feel fresh and alive and add so much warmth.Even one small plant on a nightstand or desk can make a difference. Plus, taking care of plants gives them a little responsibility, definitely easier than a fish! All our favorite plants here.

6. One-of-a-Kind Decor

Some of my favorite things in my girls’ rooms are thrifted finds, handmade pieces, art they love, photos and quirky things they’ve collected. We just got this beautiful sunflower art and it tied the colors in the room together perfectly!

Let them mix colors, patterns and styles. Their bedroom is such a fun place for them to figure out what they actually like. A room that feels collected is always more interesting to me than one where everything perfectly matches.

7. Hooks Everywhere

This might not be the prettiest teen bedroom essential, but hooks may be one of the most useful. Backpacks, hoodies, purses, hats… give all of it somewhere to go besides the floor!

8. Somewhere for Friends to Hang Out

Our girls’ window seats have ended up being one of our favorite parts of their rooms. They use them to read and relax, and they’re perfect when friends are over. Yellow Ruffle Pillows // Inserts // Curtain Panels // Window Seat Info

9. A Diffuser

We have diffusers throughout our home, including in the bedrooms. My girls love having their rooms smell good, but we don’t do candles in bedrooms. A diffuser is such an easy way for them to make their space smell cozy and choose a scent depending on their mood or the season. Disco Ball Diffuser

10. A Memo or Inspiration Board

Give them somewhere to put all the things! Photos with friends, concert tickets, artwork, schedules, little notes and random things they want to save.

11. Mood Lighting

The right lighting can completely change how a bedroom feels. I love giving my girls a few different lighting options besides the overhead light.We just added this new lampshade to Lola’s room and it’s such a simple detail, but it makes the whole space feel extra cozy and collected.

12. Room for Their Personality

Maybe this is the most important essential of all. A teen bedroom doesn’t have to be perfect. It just needs to feel personal, cozy and like the person who lives there. Lola’s new bedding was such a simple change, but it made her whole room feel fresh again. And yes, I would absolutely buy that duvet a third time!
