I was talking to my friend April, (who is also my neighbor) and she had mentioned that her daughter, Elle, has a hard time getting to sleep and actually wanting to sleep in her room. April said, “maybe if I decorated it, she would like it more.” I totally agree with that, when kids like their bedrooms, they want to spend time in there, and then hopefully makes them feel comfortable enough to sleep in their beds! It is the snowball effect. So I offered to give Elle a bedroom makeover!
Thank you The Company Store for sponsoring this makeover!

Elle’s Drawing of Room-
Bedroom Before-
Elle had recently moved into the basement bedroom, that used to be a guest room. They had plans to decorate it for Elle, but hadn’t implemented the plans yet, they did have a drawing and some ideas!
Bedroom After-
The main thing in their bedroom plan for Elle’s room was a checkered wall! So I ran with checkered wall idea and used Checkered Wallpaper as the backdrop for the room, and my starting off point. The wallpaper is peel & stick, making it really easy to install and affordable. I knew I didn’t want to wallpaper to the ceiling, so we used a piece of trim to create a stopping point for the wallpaper and painted the top portion a blue color (Oval Room Blue from Farrow & Ball, we had color matched at Sherwin Williams with a paint chip we had), which makes the room feel taller (we had the color matched from wallpaper).
Bedroom Desk Before-
Elle also has this great built-in desk nook, that I wanted to do a fun wallpaper in to give her a space to create and add more character to the room.
Bedroom Desk Area After-
April, Elle’s mom, said she keeps coming down to Elle’s room just to look at it, because it just feels so happy! In a basement bedroom, it is important to go with brighter colors when the sun isn’t able to pour into the room as much.
I did a play on pattern in this built-in desk nook with this fun deco shell wallpaper. It is hard to see in the photo but the shell wallpaper has the darker blue around the shell that we painted above the checkered wallpaper.
Elle had a lot of sweet paintings she had created, but said she didn’t like any of them, not a surprise, we are often our biggest critics. April and I said how much we loved them ALL, especially the sweet bunny, so I made sure to frame that! Also included a bulletin board she can pin photos on.
There wasn’t a plug for the lamp, so I just used the magic light trick to bring light to her lamp (I have had that lamp for awhile and it was perfect in her room!).
I found this velvet desk chair, reminds me of my girls Anthropologie desk chairs!
Rug-
This floral rug, from The Company Store website was the perfect way to pull all the colors together! Especially the green velvet bed with the wallpaper and walls.
Curtains-
I have had those pink velvet curtains a ling time! They were just waiting for the right room. We hung this black simple curtain rod about 8″ above the window. I had a few people ask how I decided that height, well, I didn’t want the curtains the same height as the desk nook, and I don’t love when there is a huge blank gap from the top of the window. The curtains feel cozy and eclectic in this room.
Bed and Bedding-
In Elle’s bedroom we went from a king to a queen bed to fit her better and the room. The Company Store now has a mattress, so that is what we got her to go along with all her new bedding. All of us tested it out it is very comfortable!!! The perfect not to firm, and not too soft feel. Also love that the mattress is CertiPUR-US® certified, which means they are made without ozone-depleting chemicals and phthalates regulated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Bonus they offer a 15 year warranty.
I basically follow the same recipe when making any of my beds. This makes for a fluffy, comfortable place to sleep and a really pretty bed to look at too!
- Mattress Pad– I start with this mattress pad. It is cooling and adds extra padding to a mattress…a must!
- Premium Ultra Cozy Sheets– I am a big fan of patterned sheets! I loved the blue and sweet acorn pattern on these for Elle.
- Quilt– I have use this quilt in a lot of bedroom makeovers, and we personally have it on several beds. It is soft, and not too heavy. Comes in a lot of colors.
- Stripe Duvet– this duvet comes in several colors too, I love that it really works with most any room!
- Duvet Insert (in extra) – my go-to! This duvet is cooling in the summer and warming in the winter, it is light and fluffy! This is an investment piece that you will have for well over 20 years!!! Just simply change the duvet cover when you want a new look.
- Euro Shams– I use these, feather and down euro shams for ALL my beds!
- Standard pillow insert (extra firm)– quality inserts make the bed!
I typically like to fold down the quilt, so you can see a peek of the sheets. Sheets, quilt, and duvet!
As for her bed, I tried a lot of different bed colors in the design plan, but went a green velvet bed, it really grounds the space. I LOVE the scallop detail on the bed too, plus it does have hidden storage under the bed if you need it!
I finished off the look with this bench at the end of the bed. It is a boucle material, love the modern, fun design!
We tried all the art I bought over for Elle’s room over the bed! All of the art is just so fun, so it was hard to decide which piece to go front and center….
My daughter Ella, had just taken down the Canter’s Art from her bedroom, because she wanted more navy in her room. And the timing couldn’t have been more perfect because the Canter’s looks SO good in Elle’s room, like I had planned it all along!
We strung this fun star garland over the front to give a causal, playful look.
Nightstands-
My friend Loralee, who is an artist, commented “the yellow nightstands are my favorite part! The yellow is so unexpected and really levels-up the design.” Agree! I found these nightstands, and knew they would be the right contrast for the room.
I went with these lamps on each of the nightstands, love that they have a dimmer switch. Then hung Matisse Poster’s in these white frames on each side of the bed.
Also Elle is in LOVE with her diffuser, the disco ball style is so fun for a teen bedroom. I had Lavender diffusing right away and it just created the perfect vibe in here!
Hung this wavy mirror, was the perfect thing to cover the water shut off valve.
Elle has a large closet, so doesn’t need a dresser in her room. But the nightstands provide enough storage for little things she wants to keep organized in a drawer.
Elle plays the guitar and ukulele, so we got them out of their carrying bag and hung them on the wall, with a hook to double as decor! Adding personal touches that reflect the person who lives here is always a good idea!
Elle is a happy girl in her new room and actually has slept in here three nights! Success!
