A Colorful Christmas in Our Basement Family Room

Our basement family room has always been a happy spot in our home! Bright walls, a big gold sofa, and pillows in every color of the rainbow. It’s playful, bold, and the kind of space that instantly makes you want to curl up and stay awhile. So when Christmas came around this year, I leaned all the way into that colorful, joy-filled vibe. And it turned out to be my favorite version yet!

Two Trees Are Better Than One

Instead of my usual flocked tree, I surprised myself and went classic green this year… well, actually two classic green trees. One large tree and one small one.

Our big Christmas Tree is the star of the room, dressed in colorful string bulb lights that feel perfectly vintage and festive. Love the extra sparkle the tinsel around the bulbs added! We filled the branches with round ornaments in every color you can imagine.

Three different ribbon colors. Gold gingham ribbon (cut fabric!) that perfectly matches our sofa, a pink ribbon that ties into our walls, and long, skinny purple ribbon that adds just the right amount of whimsy.

The finishing touch? A ruffled gingham tree skirt, same gold gingham as the ribbon, giving the whole tree a sweet homespun look.

Colorful Christmas Links

And our smaller tree, over by our gaming table, turned out to be the sweetest little moment in the room.

We covered it in pink and red ribbons tied all over the branches, plus strands of tiny colorful ball garlands that drape so playfully. I filled it with ornaments in every shade of pink. From soft blush to bright fuchsia, and it gives off the happiest glow.

It’s like a cheerful little sidekick to our big tree, bringing even more color and charm to the space. Similar Room Divider // Feline Art

The Merriest Mantle

The mantle might be my favorite part of the whole room. I draped my go-to cedar garland (it’s a tradition at this point!) and wove in another colorful bulb string lights with tinsel so it mirrors the tree.

The stockings hanging below are all different colors but tied together by a matching gingham pattern. Eclectic but cohesive, which is basically the theme of this room. Chair (similar) // Pillow // Blue Ottoman

Above the mantle hangs one of my most treasured Christmas pieces, our Swan artwork, now framed by a giant gingham bow. It’s dramatic, playful, and such a cheerful anchor for the whole room.

Little Details That Make It Magical

To bring everything together, I added matching gingham bows above both windows, echoing the one around the artwork. It’s amazing how those little repeats of color and pattern make the whole space feel intentional and extra cozy.

Gingham & Garland Above the TV

To keep the room feeling cohesive, I also hung the same cedar garland above the TV, high enough that it doesn’t block the screen. (I already got in trouble for that from Finn, so lesson learned!) And because I’m fully committed to the theme this year, I didn’t hold back on the gingham bows. They’re everywhere in the best way…sweet, oversized, and perfectly matching our stockings. Cozy Nights & Christmas Movies

There’s just something about the glow of the trees, the twinkle of the garlands, and all the colorful decorations that makes our Christmas movie nights feel extra magical. Honestly, it doesn’t feel right to watch a single Christmas movie until everything is decorated and the room is glowing.

Family Christmas Movies to enjoy!

Once the lights are on and the whole space is sparkling, settling onto the big sofa with a favorite holiday movie feels so much more cozy and meaningful. It’s become one of our favorite family traditions…decorations first, then movies.

One funny thing about this room is the boys always end up sitting on the coffee table. I have no idea why, but apparently it’s the perfect spot for a closer look at the trees. It’s sturdy enough to hold a whole handful of boys, and honestly, it works because they pull the ottomans right up to it like a table, instant extra seating. They even do this during video game nights! We’re going to switch things up soon… can’t wait to share what’s coming.
