We decided to giveaway one last makeover before we drive away from Connecticut. I took to Instagram and asked you to submit a bedroom you needed help making over, one requirement was you had to be local. We had over 200 submissions! We narrowed it down to 4 bedrooms and had you help us decide. We really wanted to do ALL of them!!! Unfortunately we are limited on time, we had to pick just one. The bedroom of a lovely single mom was our winner, she also has her small home office in the same space. Let’s take a look at the bedroom before and after!
Thank you to The Company Store for sponsoring this post
Bedroom with Office Before-

This was part of the email I received from Vanessa-
“I’m working, single mom, who works all.the.time – I roll out of bed and to my desk at 4:45 every morning to get a few hours of work in before my girl wakes up. I work at my desk in my bedroom, which never quite got made over into a functional space that still has a sense of calm after I unplug at night. Between 12 hr workdays and trying to be a present parent in the evenings, my room has been neglected and become just plain kooky dooks. It used to be the office until we experienced some big life changes, and I moved the master bedroom down from the top floor to be right next to her room. Thank you for offering makeovers, it’s always amazing to see the projects unfold, and for the always uplifting, positive, content you and your family provide! “
Bedroom and Office After-

We really wanted to give her a cozy, comfy bed and a space that she loved to be in to work all day too! I think we accomplished that! She is very happy with it all.

We kept her light fixture (that she really liked), it was actually my inspiration for the space! It is always helpful to start off with one inspiration item or inspiration picture. The light had some gold tones, which inspired the yellow, happy bedding!
Bedding

The bedding is all from The Company Store, a favorite of mine for bedding! I know exactly what duvet insert to order that will give that fluffy full bedding look. Same with the pillow inserts, having the right inserts will make or break your bed.
Bedding Sources-
- Duvet Cover- Damask Cotton Sateen– SO soft and comes in 3 colors
- Duvet Insert– I like ultra warmth because it is the fluffiest (we have this too and I don’t think it is too hot, neither does Kevin, but we do sleep with a fan)
- Sheets Cotton Wrinkle-Free Sateen– these are so soft!! I am going to get these for new bed too!
- Blanket- Gossamer Cotton – this is really light weight, I used it instead of a heavy quilt and also at the end of her bed in the rose water color for a layered look.
- Euro Sham- Stencil Damask Cotton Sateen– such a happy spring pattern
- Euro Sham- White Sateen– these are a go-to!
- Euro Insert- Feather Down– I like how full these are. They work great in a 26″ euro sham
- Standard Sham- White Sateen– another classic
- Standard Sham Insert– I order these in extra firm

You really can’t go wrong with white euro shams! Such a great starting off point for any bedding. And, with white shams, you can easily layer throw blankets to change the look for different seasons. I love these white soft sateen euro shams!

I did four euro shams for her bed. She wants to be able to sit in bed occasionally and work, more pillows for back support the better! Another reason I love these extra firm fluffy euro shams.
Paint Color-
I love a contrasting color for bedrooms. We went with Dead Salmon from Farrow and Ball. That is a name you won’t forget! “A subtle shade whose name refers to the flat or ‘dead’ finish of an aged pink painted at Kedleston Hall in 1805, Dead Salmon has a magical quality to it as everyone sees it differently.” We only had to do one coat of paint, because we used a nice quality paint with primer, Bear Marquee (we had it color matched). A bedroom is a great place to go bold. It really cozied it up!

Dresser and Lamp DIY

She already had this tall skinny dresser in the room. I gave it two coats of Mudpaint (color Manor White). Quick transformation! And goes with the bedding nicely too.

Another quick DIY was painting this $8 Goodwill Lamp and putting a new white lampshade on it. Looks so great in the room! I mixed some flour into the paint (weird right?! some said to use baking soda) and it gave the lamp base a really cool texture.

Office Space

This bedroom needed to do double duty! Vanessa works from home, in her bedroom, everyday. We wanted to make sure it was pretty and functional. She did go through and get rid of things before we came (which was SO helpful!!!!) Only keeping things she used regularly in her bedroom/office space.

She had a dark bookcase and a darker desk before. We got her a new white Billy Bookcase and put it on the opposite wall to add height to that corner. Otherwise the nightstand, desk and bed were all the same height. (She had ordered the desk and it was in a box, waiting to be switched up!).

We got her a comfy fur chair, diffuser on her desk, a stand for her printer, plant…all the essentials! Notice the beach art that was once above our fireplace? It is so pretty against this salmon wall.

My friend Brandi donated her time and organized this bookcase for Vanessa! She is so talented. Loved all her organizing tips.

She said to create layers on shelves for paper. Have “room to grow” with empty bins, one of the white magazine storage containers is empty.

I like how she put storage bins inside the basket to keep things organized!

This is her “mailing station”, so she can easily grab this basket and take it to her desk the next time she needs to mail something.

We even swapped out her dark roman shade for our favorite whitewash bamboo shade.

She couldn’t wait to jump in this cozy bed!! I told her this is exactly how I make my bed at home. And, walked her through how awesome the duvet cover is with the ties in each corner, to keep it all in place!

Happy we could do one last makeover while in CT! I can just imagine mother and daughter snuggling, reading a book in here at night. She text me after we left and said “The more time I spend in my room the more I love it and the more special all of these pieces are to me.” Makes my heart happy!
SO great Brooke! I love the wall color – and the springy bright feeling! It’s amazing what a room makeover does for someone’s spirits!!! 💜
