Colorful Whimsical Christmas in our Basement 2024

Our Christmas tradition is to have Christmas morning in our basement, this is where Santa comes! Speaking of basement, one of you suggested I call it something other than “basement”, she said it is more than a basement! She said she calls their basement the lodge, because it looks like a lodge. Any suggestions? I was thinking Candy Land? The art over the fireplace is called Candy Land, and we do have a candy station?? I digress, back to Christmas morning….when we live in Connecticut for 6 years, we would come home to Utah every Christmas and sleep at my parent’s house. We love spending that time with my parents, so we invite them to sleep over at our house on Christmas Eve.

I wanted to keep our basement Christmas decor really colorful and fun to match everything else going on down here. Lola’s birthday is the day after Thanksgiving this year, and will be having her friend party at our house, so I wanted to also give this area party vibes! I think I accomplished it with tinsel and large paper ornaments!

Candy Land Basement Plan-

For our flocked Christmas Tree,I started with pink velvet ribbon tied in a knot (I attached to the tree with a bobby-pin). Then cut up leftover gingham fabric I had used for the curtain on our drink room! Next layered all my colorful ornaments. Most of the ornaments are from this collection, (this is a similar set for less) and I mixed in some vintage ornaments. Lastly, the icing on the cake, tinsel!

Our mantle is original, 1970’s and it is quirky, longer on one side than the other. I layered this flocked garland as my base and these berry string lights! I will say the color of the garland was feeling more sage green than the tree, so I added in pieces of white flocked branches from a broken flocked tree to add more white. And to give more a funky, nostalgic Christmas rather than country I added in tinsel!

I do use nails to keep the garland in place, I have tried command hooks and they don’t work for me.

The large pink accordion paper ornaments add a lot of fun too!! Plus the pink brings in the pink from the Christmas tree.

Feels like a Christmas party, just like I wanted!

This tree just makes me smile, and the kids love it! They kept asking if I would decorate for Christmas, they love to come home to things decorated!

I found a fun wrapping with a pop of pink, with yellow rick rack ribbon and pink scallop ribbon! My goal is to wrap presents as soon as I get them, some I will put under the tree, some will be hidden.
