I didn’t want to do an entire blog post all about our New Fence, not sure how many of you are interested! So I am including it on our Friday Favorites along with some major Memorial Day Sales! I wanted to share what our cedar fence looks like now it’s up, why we picked this type of fence, where we put it and what we paid. I can not even tell you how much I LOVE this fence. This fence means safety for our wild inquisitive Finn.
Also I feel the need to share this. The other night I was driving my daughter home from soccer. They have soccer practice in an area of our town that is not by Main Street or the beach. They have large, HUGE properties. We are talking minimum 5 million+! These homes have homes like mine, actually bigger than mine on their property for the property managers to live in. Needless to say it is a dangerous area for me to drive because the roads are narrow and I just want to stare at the homes and not the road. We drove by a brand new construction that was all white, black windows, large property, GORGEOUS! And instantly I heard a voice in my head say “what are you even doing showing people YOUR house.” I didn’t think, oh man I am jealous and I want that house. It was about sharing our little house with you. On that drive I gave up. I decided right then I was done. I just look ridiculous. I mean, I shared our little cape to 179k people on Instagram and look at our roof! I even had someone say “you need a new roof because it looks bad” (I can’t see that?).
I received probably five messages that night saying that you too have a normal home and appreciate seeing other normal size homes. I teared up over every message. We are here for each other, to give each other ideas and new ways to look at our homes, no matter the type of home we live in.
I was at book club the other night and one of the ladies said her husband put an offer on a much larger house, over budget. She mentioned going back to work to afford it (luckily she does like to work). But it stressed me out just talking to her about it. We should not be serving our homes. Our homes should serve us. Small homes and small apartments are expensive too! It is not about size it is about being comfortable, happy and content no matter where we are.
You might be reading this and have a 10,000 square foot home or a 500 square foot home or it could be brand new or 200 years old. The point is we are all trying to make our homes a refuge from the world, a safe place. And I think we can all connect with each other on that.
Still here.
“Not today satin!”
Moving onto….
Cedar Fence-
We did two gates on either side of our house and replaced an old fence that was falling down to the right of our house. And actually looking at the pictures now I realize we should have done the boxwood hedges like we have on the left of our house…hmmmm. Anyways. Live and learn. The shrubs would have cost a lot more (I think) and taken longer to fill in (trying to justify my decision). Funny how you see things differently when you take a picture! We went with this fence because we have a nice cedar fence all along the back of our house.
But the gates are the bomb! We didn’t want it to go all the way around the front yard, we want the kids to be able to use the cement alongside the house and we don’t want Finn playing in the front yard even if it is fenced in (call it overprotective or the fact that I don’t want to have to watch him 24/7….free play is good for us all). For a total of 8 fence panels, one small gate and one big gate we paid close to $3k.
The cedar fence will eventually darken to the same color as our back fence. I think we will leave it this natural color rather than painting it white. What do you think? If we do want to paint it we couldn’t even paint it for close to a year because the cedar needs to dry out and it is really humid in Connecticut.

Brooke, your words in this post are amazing!!! Too many people post pictures that are too perfect(staged) or share overly expensive items that aren’t even practical. When most people reading these blogs are your average person just trying to get ideas and make their homes a prettier, cozier place. That’s why I LOVE your blog. You’ve always showed real life with stains on the rugs and dishes in the sink. I couldn’t appreciate that more. Your home really is my dream home. It’s filled with love and laughter. It’s absolutely gorgeous and so cozy. I literally smile every time you post a picture of your home. And I know someday I’ll be able to make mine the same way-little by little. Thank you for sharing. By the way, your new door color is SO cute and I’m showing this post to my husband who wants a new fence for our yard. đ
I love your blog and your home. I can’t even imagine what it would be like to own a home that includes a cottage for the property manager! And, the taxes!!! I personally like the North East and go up as possible to visit our daughter but it’s an expensive part of the country and anyone who owns a home is very fortunate. She has so many friends who continue to rent and with high rents, of course it’s harder to save for a down payment. It’s hard when she sees what she could afford in an area such as ours. We can’t do everything we would like to do, at least as quickly as we’d like, and that’s frustrating, too. But doing things intentionally and not impulsively is my goal. I love your style and love that not every post is sponsored. I get frustrated when I see things I’d like to get but have to wait….probably like most people. Anyway, keep it up and love the new fence and siding.
Oh, please understand how very important it is that you just share your lovely little cottage. If people have unlimited funds, they will figure out how to make things fancy and beautiful. But…………………..the gal who has a smaller home………or a limited budget……..she is the one who NEEDS you to help her see that beauty is something that is attainable. The madness of all the “stuff” we want (speaking to myself here as well) distracts us (me) from the JOY of the moment, the appreciation of a small improvement, a small purchase, etc. We owe our hard working husbands credit for what they are providing, their faithfulness to go out each day to work, work, work. It is a noble thing to “live within one’s harvest” don’t you think?
Your blog is one of my favorites…..love your style!! There is such love and warmth shown in your house. I live in central Massachusetts in a lovely town with much history. There are many new large homes being built with very expensive prices.
Sometimes I ride by just to take a look. They are pretty…but At this point in my life I know what is important is the love that is inside the house. Your home radiates love…and I think it’s adorable too!! Please know that.
Your words touched my heart . I live in a small 1100 sq foot cottage and I LOVE every inch of it and the area I live in. Your home is filled with so much joy and laughter and family. The love you and Keven have for each other and your children and your home is much bigger then any stately mansion. One of my favorite movies is â Its A Wonderful Lifeâ and when Harry Bailey toasts George at the end and says â To my big brother George, the richest man in townâ , itâs because of his family, friends and all those that love him …. and thatâs what truly matters.
Your home is so lovely! I live in a home with 3800 sq ft. in Ohio. We moved her from a 100-year-old 1500 sq ft home in NJ. As newlyweds, we lived in 600 sq ft 4th floor walk-up in NJ. So Iâve been on both sides. I have 4 kids pretty close in age and was too busy in their younger years to give any thought to what I liked in home decor. I didnât grow up in a home with any style at all, so itâs all new to me. Iâll tell you that your small home has inspired a lot of design ideas in my large home. I always wanted a home that was a peaceful refuge from the world. Iâve adopted the Laura Ingalls Wilder quote âHome is the nicest word there isâ as my home motto and strive to make it true for my family. That goes beyond decor, of course, but it all starts with love and wanting to give your family a place to rest and love and grow into who they arenât called to be. So when you begin to doubt that people are interested in what you have to say or that your home isnât good enough, remember there are people like me who are so grateful they accidentally found you on Instagram while looking for something else.
As part of a family of 3 (hopefully 4 one day!) living in an 1100 sq ft home, your blog is one of my favorites! So many good ideas for making things beautiful & functional. đ
Gosh,…. how often Iâm reluctant to have people over because Iâm concerned our house is too small. We are a family of 4 living in an 1100 square-foot house – no garage or basement, so every inch has to be used wisely. I find I often struggle with coveting what others have rather than appreciating what God has already provided. I constantly have to check my motives when drooling over Instagram posts. Thereâs a big difference between inspiration and coveting! So, Iâm thankful to have found you because I LOVE your style, but more so because of your joy, love for family, authenticity and willingness to be vulnerable with âstrangersâ. (Funny how quickly Iâve come to think of you as a friend even though you donât know me.) Please know that your words and your posts arenât just inspirational from a design perspective, but that they also help remind us to find peace and contentment with our provision. â€ïž
Appreciate your post and your perspective. The reason I enjoy following you is because your life is real and you are living a life that shows contentment where God has you and I appreciate that. I follow very few people that I donât personally know on Instagram. Social media is a breeding ground for discontentment and I donât need that in my life. So I appreciate your humble approach to home decorating and caring for your family.
Your new fence looks great! I do have a question though. Iâve noticed that I donât see garages on the homes that you have shown. Are they in the back or do homes there not have garages?
Please your blog is my favorite of all, too many people are trying to make everything perfect, life and people are not perfect. You show us how to be practical and intentional with our designs, so many blogs are just about keeping up with the Joneses, not the way GOD intended us to be. You show us yo be happy with what you have and at Peace. Thatâs what you teach me daily. Love you and your blog. Please donât change. Love the shutters, fence and that roof!
The size of a house really doesn’t matter; it’s who is inside that makes it a home. I’m a Realtor and believe me the larger the house the bigger the headaches can be. You’ve done a beautiful job of making your house a home clearly full of love and memories.
Houses, like people come in all sizes and shapes. What makes a house a home is the love and care the owner puts into it to make it warm and welcoming to guests and comfortable and livable for the entire family. Your blog is so lovely, not because of the size of your home, but because of the love and care you put into creating a special place for your family. Sharing that process on your blog is a rare treat. Please donât be discouraged. Your blog shines!
Brooke,
Everyday I look to see if you have posted pictures or a blog post. I canât get enough of the content, your cute house, cute clothes and other items. I love it all! Keep it coming!
Xx,
Brooke
Brooke, your post spoke to me today! Was that your intention? I’m sad you had tears over those heartless posts by others. I sat here this morning thinking of what I’ll do without my job that I recently left due to a bully in the office..(.oh how cruel others can be). It will be tough without me working and I’m a huge nest builder with my heart in the midst of trying to design and create a warm home for my family. I’ve realized over the past month that I’ve been home that I’m actually happy…happy to be here and enjoy the nest that I have..for once in my life I’m not running around trying to make that extra dollar and miss out on the grandson’s birthday party or not have the time to have others over for a visit as I was way too tired…..It’s the simple things in life that matter! Enjoy looking at those big homes for inspiration, sure, but Love comes in tiny houses! (song?) Beauty comes in all sizes and more money doesn’t make for more happiness or greatness by any means! I love your blog! Be you!!!! That’s your life’s mission…..Just be You!! Thank you for that! Bless you dear:0)
I Appreciate your posts and your home is lovely!
I always love reading your blog! It is so inspiring! I actually prefer a small cozy home to a huge one. I feel that they are usually so much more inviting. Keep sharing, inspiring, and keeping us all entertained with your positive and honest thoughts!
Oh man, I could have written your exact opening. I took my son to a birthday party a few months ago at a classmate’s lovely large house, complete with pool, tennis court, and horse paddock. He was so impressed with the fact that they must be billionaires to have that house. It was one of the few times I really got down about our own is a 1600 sq ft townhouse and Y membership for tennis courts and swimming pools. But we have people who love us and our little house and who will squeeze into every corner when we invite them over and fill it with love and laughter.
We have a house that is similar to yours, and I have loved making it beautiful again! (We have that exact same dang roof and it is not pretty. But we refuse to replace a roof just because it’s not beautiful. Sometimes function wins.) We originally bought it as a starter home, and now can’t bear to leave it. I love your blog because it gives me ideas to use in my own small space.
Its a double edge sword this internet/instagram thing. I love all the inspiration but I find myself getting really down sometimes after looking at all the ‘perfect’ squares. We built our home 4 years ago (1600 sf ranch) and its so small compared to all the 3600 sf 2 story houses on our block. But its what we can afford and its just perfect for us right now. Its so hard not to compare to others!
That is why I love your blog and instagram feed! I have done so many quick little update projects since watching your stories and those little things make me feel so good about how my home looks and the organization of it. They weren’t big money updates (peel and stick wallpaper in the laundry room, pantry organization, re-styling with things I already own!). I love love love your home and all the tips and updates you share!!!
@bluehouseonthecorner
I follow many bloggers on Instagram, I truly love them all but I donât have time to read their blogs. Yours is the exception to that. Every morning I wake up and check my emails. I see a Nesting with Grace blog post email and Iâm hooked, so the next 10 minutes or so I spend reading YOUR blog. I live in a 1,000 sq ft home that has not been upgdated for 20 years (luckily when they did update it 20 years ago they chose all nuetral colors for flooring, paint, and cabinets). We know we wonât be here forever so we arenât wanting to spend the money to update but we have learned to love every tiny inch of it. I think your blog/instagram/facebook group has made me fall in love with MY home even more! So please donât ever stop sharing because you have given me more inspiration than anyone ever has!
Never doubt your contribution to making the world a better place!
I love looking at giant homes too, it’s fun to see how some people choose to live. I do the same thing when driving around my neighborhood. But I am thankful to go back to my small, mostly manageable, home that meets my family’s needs. There are people in the world that would give anything to live in my small house. I’m thankful I have it.
I need your posts because I don’t know what looks good anymore. I’m not sure I ever knew! But I figure why reinvent the wheel. I count on you (because I like your style!) to tell me what to look for and how to do something. I don’t have time or energy to come up with it on my own! So thanks!
I have only commented on line one other time in my life, but felt the need today. I absolutely LOVE your blog. Your house is amazing to look at and your tips are practical and inspiring. My house now is only slightly larger than yours and I’ve also lived in smaller. I love to decorate and nest and change it up for the seasons. My house reflects how happy I am and I don’t need anything bigger or better. I hope you realize there are many people out there like me that feed off your inspiration on a daily basis. Wishing you and your sweet little family a lovely summer and enjoy your new outdoor space as much as we enjoy looking in on you.

Brooke, please keep doing what you’re doing! My family and I live in a 2000 square foot 1980 house (that we love!). Before that, we’ve lived in houses built in 1925, 1911, and 1920 (we love older homes too but were ready for a more modern design now that our kids are adults and will still be living both in and out of our home for a while). Normal but lovely, cozy homes are all I’ve ever aspired to. I would not even WANT to live in (nor really even read about) huge, expensive homes. I mean, they have their place and they can be beautiful, but all I can think about is the cleaning, the upkeep, the expense of all that. Heck, part of me dreams of living in a van for the freedom to travel the country! đ
What you do and create in your home and family is so lovely, please don’t stop sharing it.
I see that sooooo many people have already weighed in on your post… but I wanted to share something with you: Just a few weeks back I saw a post that you shared with us about one of your projects.. I knew my dear friend would enjoy your post … as her style is so similar to yours…. Also, she is kind of side lined right now… having foot surgery after a fall… which means more time to browse… đ …. She and her husband are avid DIY ers and very talented in “Re-dos” and updates on their home…. having said all that….. she has fallen in love with your home and your many projects that you share !! She loves your gorgeous cottage home and so do I!!! Thank you so much for sharing !!!!!
Bless your heart! I love your blog!! And you are so right. Get thee behind me satin. I wish more people could hear your message. We need to bloom where we are planted. Happiness comes from within. Not from things. You get it and I am so happy that your message is getting out there. Keep up your good works. There are many of us who appreciate you and your lovely family and darling home. It is all about family and the love we have for each other. Happy Memorial Day Holiday!
YES! Happiness does come within and not things. FAMILY!! The WHY!
Dear Brooke, Your home, and your blog are just beautiful. I have never seen a home infused with so much love and care as yours ! And it’s really lovely , modern, and up to date. I love everything about it ! Did you know that only 4% of the United States can be considered “millionaires”. And only 20% of the United States makes over $100,000. per year ! (Yes, I am into statistics big time !). That means that although you drive by and see all those beautiful, multi million dollar homes, they are a teeny tiny majority of the US. The huge majority of us are living in everyday homes, trying our best to make them look good on a budget. And that is why your blog, and you, are so loved !
I Love stats too! Thank you for sharing this with me!! Truly helps to put it all in perspective!
And one of the things I consider when I look at those big houses is that they likely have the big mortgage to go with it. As I told my son when he commented on the “billionaire’s house” (see my comment above): we choose to spend our money differently. Yes, we could afford a bigger house but that’s now how we want to spend our money or our time or our resources.
yes, same here. We love not feeling trapped it is really a blessing.
Hi – I am pretty sure I grew up in the town you live in – we lived in a lovely wooded area in the norhtern part of the town with lots of those big, huge houses, but ours was just a simple 1500 sq foot cape with 2 baths that my parents built on land that was gifted to them in the 1950’s. My current house just outside of Boston, which I share with two teenagers, is smaller at 1300 sq ft and one bath. I am happy becasue we “use every room, every day”. There is no space wasted. Plus we don’t have to clean or heat or buy funriture for unused rooms! I honestly don’t know the purpose of those huge houses! I love your blog an d look forward to seeing your posts!
Monica
Cute little Brooke – after reading all these nice and genuine comments I can only say DITTO! Everything they said! I do LOVE your uniqueness, your ingenuity, and (dammit!) all your smart organization (not my natural inclination!). Your style is so fresh, pretty and livable! I havenât even noticed your roof so now I have to go look and see what you were referring to đł. I know you are âfamousâ for your smart living in a small house but now you need to go refigure your square
footage with all that beautiful outdoor living! And oh my goodness, to provide freedom AND safety for that hilarious FINN! Iâm glad you canât paint the fence right away because you do need to live with it, let it age and see what you think. We left ours natural in the backyard and stained it white in the front. Looks darling with our white cottage, but the humidity and yuck we do need to power wash it more than we do, it might just become another maintenance job for you. (Lately itâs white and GREEN đ). I love your love for your family and life and your enthusiasm and sharing of all your ideas!!!! P.s. since we are getting to know ALLabout you, maybe we could have a big party and go with you to your next mammogram (oh wait, youâre not even old enough to have those yet!!). Enjoy your life and know that lots of us enjoy it along with you!!
Brooke, I just adore your house just the way it is! I think your roof looks great and everything else got that matter. Iâm bored of the perfect white modern farmhouse on my IG feed, you know the one with a huge kitchen, fancy appliances and a fancy mud room? I mean, itâs pretty but I personally find it boring! I love that you follow your own beat and do small things to make your already sweet house even sweeter! I live in a 1966 Tri-level home and I love that itâs unique! So please donât get down and know that there are folks out there that are really looking to regular folks like you for real authentic inspiration!
Oh Brooke! I’m so sorry you had a week like this! As someone who is also making a home from a small Cape Cod in the NYC suburbs, among neighbors in multi million dollar homes, I totally understand. But I love your blog and your honest voice for that very reason – we are all just doing our best to make a home for ourselves and loved ones. Keep on sharing your gift! xoxo
Love your home! And the fence đ we are thinking of putting up a picket fence as well with a gate over the driveway. I love our smaller home because it is a home filled with love. That is the most important thing! We homeschool and run a nonprofit and I wish I could get better organized! Thank you for sharing!
All my best,
Brandy
I felt lost with what to do in my house, I’m indecisive and not good at design, but I just recently found your blog and have felt so energized to make my house better for my family. My house is only a tiny bit bigger than yours. I was so happy to see a blog that had problems like I do with how to fit things in and ideas on how to make small and awkward spaces work. My husband says no to alot of things I had wanted to do and now I feel like I have someone in my corner and I’m slowly getting my husband on board! I have gotten so many ideas and so much done in the last month working towards making our house work for us and in turn it has made me happier. You are definitely inspirational to so many people. I find it a tiny bit humorous because I have shared my photos on your facebook group and end up feeling the way you feel about those houses because I feel so far away from where I want to be. You are not alone and please don’t stop because of a small house because you aren’t the only one in one! đ
Please don’t ever stop sharing your home with us!!! I need this in my life ha ha. Seriously tho, you inspire me soooo much. Not just in the home department but in the LIFE department as well! Seeing all the pretty photos of your home is just icing on the cake.
Oh thank you Amy! YOU keep me going!
I am so with you on this Brooke. Years ago when our kids were young ( they are 21 and 18 now) we were looking to move to a bigger home. My husband said we could afford it if I was willing to get a job. I told him I didnât mind getting a job, but I wasnât willing to give up being home for the kids just to pay for a bigger house. Then my mother in law passed away and we had the money for a bigger house so we put it to a vote. We could get a bigger house or we could take the money and travel. Needless to say we are still in our tiny (1600 sq ft) and the kids have some travel memories we will never forget!
LOVE this story. Thanks for sharing a part of you!!
You inspire me Brooke , love everything that you do in your house . I always look forward to your daily updates . We recently move in our new house and i would love to share and ask you for some of design tips . I already bought some of your recommendations in your blog and i just want to thank you for all your tips , you are a great help . Keep posting and being a inspiration to all .
Thank you May! Join our FB group!! Awesome team of people that help each other!
This post was very well said! I definitely agree, itâs not all about size especially if you love it! My home is 1074 sq feet and I adore it!!!
YES!
I live in a small home as well, about the size of yours but a ranch style. We raised two boys here and are still here. I don’t want to take care of a large home, but understand completely your feelings – the occasional feeling of inadequacy and the coveting of something grander. I love that you show your home as a work in progress – so much has been done and there are still things you want to do. So much more realistic, I believe, than so many blogs which seem to show an unachievable perfection. Thanks for all you do and share.
Thanks Jeannine! Yes, joy in the journey!
I LOVE your home and your posts! I feel that way all the time about my home, we canât entertain, our carpet up the stairs is hideous, I need a new light fixture here, etc. We had a small cape cod similar to yours and as the children kept coming I began to feel claustrophobic. We upsized a bit, nothing crazy or too expensive but I miss that house! Less house is less to clean too!
Ordered the patio lights tonight, thank you!
agree! Cleaning is very manageable! Thank you!!
Great post! I am ALWAYS having to remind myself, bigger isn’t always better and not everything is always as it appears. I like having the privlage of working part time versus full time. My baby is only going to be a baby once and I’m going to soak it up every chance I get! There are more important things to life than materialistic items.
Hi Brooke-
I just wanted you to know how much your blog post touched me today. Iâve followed you for a few years and consider you my favorite blogger. đ The reason for that is your happy, energetic personality, your impeccable design sense, and that you live in a smaller home, just like me! Anyway, youâve always inspired me, and I especially needed to hear what you said today about feeling like you had to quit blogging because your home doesnât compare to others. Iâve struggled so much in the past because Iâve felt like our home doesnât compare too, and I have struggled wanting more than I have. The difference between you and me is I havenât been able to fix my house up very much at all.. but your blog post helped me see that my home matters, I can work to make it better as I am able, and we can thrive here. Youâve helped me find peace in the now as Iâve realized a move just isnât going to happen for awhile. (I would like more than one bathroom and a garage someday!) I just want you to know how much you mean to so many of us BECAUSE of your smaller home. We can relate to you, we feel you can relate to us, and we LOVE that you inspire us to be our best, right where God has us. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for the light and inspiration you bring to every part of my life!! Many blessings to you, and donât ever stop! đđ
Thank goodness you decided not to leave us!!! Not only do you inspire me with your home decor and little tips and tricks on everything, but your outlook on life and on how to treat people in this world is truly inspirational. You are such a beautiful soul and Iâm so appreciative that you share that with all of us đ
Brooke, I love your post! So honest and heartfelt.
But your down to earth real life everyday posts and blog are why I and probably most of your followers DO follow you! Honestly, we have a 1900 sq. Ft home. I love your ideas and tips to help make it the coziest, welcoming home for us and all that walk through our front door. Your ideas for our outdoor living space have also inspired us.
You have to be happy and content where you are and make it your own…. and that you have showed us is real and possible!. I love reusing and repurposing… it makes it more fun and even extra special!
Keep showing us your magic!! Nobody else out there I would rather be inspired by!
You are humble, loving, giving and an amazing mommy!! Thank you for sharing it all with us!!
While itâs very fun to look at houses and decor and dream about them, itâs not what really matters. I doubt anyone ever said on their deathbed, â I only wished I had a better houseâ. I like your blog. Keep up the good work.
Brooke…I love, love, love your home and appreciate all of your posts. WE are just a few years from selling our big house and getting a smaller one…… I am taking notes and am pretty excited for that day……..more time….less stuff.
I love your blog and Iâm glad you posted those thoughts you had. they are so relatable! Never quit we need people like you!
Oh I understand about the house comparison thing. My husband has coached in professional baseball for over 30 years. He in no way makes the big bucks…he makes the average American salary. So, we live in a small home. It’s cute and comfortable and I’m not sure I would want anything larger. The children are out of the house,so we downsized and there will be enough room for grandchildren when they visit. Anyway, because of my husband’s job, we are friends with famous athletes and sometimes we visit them in their homes. Talk about some big homes and in the most pristine neighborhoods, almost like a movie set. When we drive through those neighborhoods, I’m glad I’m not driving because I am looking all around at how grand and “perfect” the homes are on those pristine streets. Some of the homes I’ve been inside of look like a Restoration Hardware catalogue. We may visit for a day or two and then when we return home, my house welcomes me back with so much warmth I wonder why I admired those large homes so much. My little home may not be grand or in a pristine, movie set- like neighborhood, but it’s just perfect to me and for me. I’m thankful to God for that little cottage. By the way, your house is just precious. The love, not the decor or size, inside of our homes is what really makes it home.
Thank you very much for this Montee I love your words xxxxx
Hi Brooke, I love your posts, they are so encouraging and inspiring! Keep using your giftings!
Brooke, I LOVE your home, and your ideas and your creativity! And your relatability! Please keep sharing. Your blog is a ray of sunshine!
The fence looks lovely. I do love a white traditional fence as well. I would paint it.
