A lot of you have asked recently what products I use on my face. It kind-of cracks me up, because I am the most BASIC girl with face products. Honestly. So if you are reading this expecting some fancy creams and potions, wrong blog. I am the same with my make-up routine, basic. I love mascara, good eyebrows, a glowing face, blush and thats about it. I don’t wear powder or foundation. I just have always been worried I would break out, or makeup would slip off the side of my face and I would look ridiculous. So here I am writing a blog post.
But I must-have been inspired. Because about three months ago I was having some skin problems. Breaking out. It was actually nothing new, I always get a little break-out around that time of the month. But I was having breakouts all the time all of a sudden. It was really frustrating. I was trying everything to get rid of it!
I had started using a really expensive cleaner from a friend who works in the skin-care industry and I swore that made it worse! I decided to basically detox and use nothing. Except for a favorite face mask. But I was missing something.
I was missing a a moisturizer! I finally found something that not only moisturized my skin naturally but helped it to glow. I did discover a natural face cleaner too. Yes, a big part was essential oils. But I also do a couple other things that contribute to my better skin. No my skin is NOT perfect. But it is better than it was before. And how could I not be happy with that? Also I want to mention that all of my makeup and face routine is “natural” I am slowly working on it. But I wanted to share the process with you.
Below is the BEFORE (about 3 months ago) and the AFTER (yesterday)
I don’t have any filters on. The above photo was taken at night and the bottom was in the day. But you can clearly see how my skin has cleared up! The above I have no- eye makeup on and the bottom I happened to have it on. Let me share my skin care routine! Reminder- I am not a professional. I am just sharing what I do and what is working for me and my lifestyle.
I will also say that everything skin related starts in your gut. So if you are having inflammation then often it is gut related. So I started to use Progessence Plus, this has been the MAJOR game changer in my skin. Progessence Plus Boosts progesterone. I love this one!! It is known to balance the effects of estrogen dominance and promote regular cycles with fewer PMS symptoms. I apply this directly to my stomach (read more about that here).
My Skin Care Routine-
Charcoal Soap– I use a charcoal soap bar to clean my face every night and morning (from Young Living). “Activated charcoal will not harm your skin, which makes it a good addition to your cleansing routine. If you suffer from dry skin, use charcoal soap to replace harsher cleansers. For adults with mild acne, a charcoal cleanser can help prevent outbreaks“. Just get my washcloth a little wet and rub it on the soap. Done! (It is from Young Living- you can read more about that HERE. You can just buy it without being a member).
Indian Healing Clay Mask– Once a week I use this mask mixed with apple cider vinegar. My kids can’t stand the smell! Doesn’t bother me. It hardens and works like no-other mask! Find it HERE. It is deep pore cleaning with 100% natural calcium bentonite clay.
Shave my Face– about every two weeks I shave my face! It’s not what you are picturing. I use THESE tiny razors (dry, no shaving cream or soap) to get the hair off and it also removes the dead skin! Amazing exfoliator. I used to use a PMD every Sunday night. Which I do occasionally, but I feel like these razors not only remove hair they do the job of a PMD to get rid of the layer of dead skin. I shave my face, they use the soap then the moisturizer. Not your face hair does not come in like a man after or really any different than before!
Remove Makeup– I was using coconut oil to remove my eye makeup. After starting with my oils I realized and read more it says that coconut oil clogs pores. Jojoba Oil is a better option, doesn’t clog pores. But I am loving THESE makeup remover washcloths! Just water on the washcloth and my eye makeup comes right off!!! (the pink cloths in the photo were sent to me from @latesbykate HERE)
Mint Facial Scrub– I mix this scrub into my routine maybe once or twice a week. It smells amazing and cleans my pores a little deeper! Made with apricot seed powder, our Satin Facial Scrub gently lifts and removes dry, dead skin cells to reveal bright and even-looking skin. (It is from Young Living- you can read more about that HERE. You can just buy it without being a member, but it cost more).
Glow Serum Moisturizer– Ok this is gold to me. I swear this is what has ready made face change. It has frankincense which- brightens skin, fights blemishes & promotes healthy, glowing skin also am anti-aging and wrinkle fighter!! Geranium- promotes cell regeneration & supports smooth, healthy skin. Copaiba- eliminates scars and anti-inflammatory agent. I mix that with Jojoba Oil, which is great way to remove makeup and balances the natural oils on your face. You can go HERE to get the exact recipe and find more about the oils I love and use.
My Makeup
I feel put together if I at least put on my eye makeup! I always try to put it on first thing when I wake-up. Just to get my day started. I like to wear mascara even at the gym- because if I get home from the gym my day just starts and I never do it. Not that you have to wear eye makeup- I just personally like it. When I am in Hawaii I never wear it, ha! I think a tan helps.
Eye Liner– I have been using THIS gel liner forever! This one little jar lasts me a year!! It is an ultrasmooth gel formula that provides the precision of a liquid liner with a silkier, softer finish. I apply it with THIS brush. Biggest tip is to get the brush wet before using. I also used to wear eyeliner on my top lid and bottom. Now I only do eyeliner on the top. I feel like it makes my face look younger (big dreams!). ***update I did switch to toxic-free Savvy Jet Setter Powder Eyeliner- so easy to use- but you have to use the Savvy Eyeliner Brush and get it wet before.
Eyelash Curler– I NEVER apply mascara before I curl my lashes. You can quickly run your blow dyer over it to heat it up (then test it on your skin first, to make sure it it not too hot). I actually used to always do that step, now I never do, lazy maybe, or I just realized if I hold it a little longer it works the same!
Mascara– I am a creature of habit. I just love THIS Mascara. I have tried natural mascaras, like beauty counter and just couldn’t get on-board. But I am open to trying others too.
Lash Boost– I swear by this stuff (find it HERE). I have tried MANY others and they did not work. It isn’t very “clean” so I don’t love recommending it. I have switched to my own DIY Lash Boost on this post. Castor oil is awesome for hair growth and also lavender essential oil!
Eye Shadow– I rarely wear eye shadow. If I do it is pretty light. I really like Savvy Minerals *not shown but it is the newest collection Sahara Sunset palette.
Blush– I LOVE blush and bronzer. I have tried all the fancy things and just go back to my drug store products! I use THIS blush and THIS bronzer. I use THESE basic drug-store makeup brushes for my blush. **Update now switched and ditched to toxic-free Savvy Minerals. I use Awestruck Blush and Crowned All Over Bronzer.
Powder– I use Savvy Minerals loose mineral powder (warm no 1). I love it! I feel like it has really good coverage without being too heavy. I recommend swirling it in circles as you apply it to active it.
Burts BB Cream– I occasionally use this when I have redness and want to conceal it. I like that is really light.
Glow Roller– I use this several times a day! Rub the roller on my cheekbones and around my eyes to highlight them and give a glow! I made two- one for in my purse and one for my makeup bag. I also will put frankincense right on my zits to help diminish them. (You can go HERE to get the exact recipe and find more about the oils I love and use).
Toner– I make my own all natural toner. No perfumes. I spray this on after I wash my face, it evens out skin tone. Or I spray it on before I go the gym and have no makeup on my face. It has changed my skin tone sooooo much!!! (I only use Young Living Oils– I know that they have no perfume or filler in them)
𝐃𝐈𝐘 𝐅𝐀𝐂𝐈𝐀𝐋 𝐓𝐎𝐍𝐄𝐑
*this recipe is for a 4oz bottle. Adjust your amounts per the size of your spray bottle
20 Geranium
20 Frankincense
1 tsp apple cider vinegar
Fill the rest with witch hazel
Eyebrows– My eyebrows are Micro Bladed– I LOVE them! Initial cost for me was around $400. But so worth it to me. I have ZERO eyebrows and they are super light. It is something that needs to be touched up about every year (cost me $250 for touch-up). So worth it in my opinion. It doesn’t hurt much at all. Some areas were more sensitive, but not bad. The only thing is you can’t workout for 48 hours after (some say 10 days). I actually worked out the day after but avoided heavy sweating. This is a time saver and also saves me from looking like a dweeb in the summer when half my eyebrow melts off!
Hope that was somewhat helpful! Let me know questions you have. xxxx

Thanks for sharing! I recently wanted to clean up my beauty and skincare products and found the detox market online. 1000s of clean beauty and skin products! My favorite clean makeup is Ilia. Their mascara and eyeliner is great, but my favorite product of theirs is their multi stick. It can be used as blush, eye makeup and even on your lips. It is amazing!
Brooke, thank you so much for sharing!! I’ve been slowly changing all my makeup and skincare products to natural. Since having my second child I suffered from pregnancy mask and hormonal breakouts. So I’m so excited to try some of your recommendations!! Since reading your essential oil post I’ve already started using frankense and can’t wait to order the others. So thank you again for the skincare share because I think you have beautiful skin!!
Thank you for all the info!
I absolutely can NOT use coconut oil on my face! I’ve been using the oil cleansing method for 10 years and love it though but coconut oil will break me out horribly even if it’s cold pressed etc… No problems with olive oil and jojoba. 🙂
I have the same reaction with coconut oil and anything even with coconut oil in it! I tried using a charcoal bar for cleansing but I broke out bc it has coconut oil in it. I’m so glad I’m not alone! So you use either jojoba or olive oil to wash your face? I have yet to find a natural cleanser that doesn’t break me out so I continue using my philosophy brand cleanser.
My chin has been breaking out a ton! Very frustrating. I’ve been using everything I can think of to clear it up however….I completely forgot about Frankincense oil!! I used to be much greener with my beauty products but have fallen off the wagon. This might be why my face is acting up. I’m making some of your Glow Serum tonight. Thank you, Brooke!! ❤️
I have fought blemishes my whole life and even went through 2 rounds of accutane. I’ve tried so many different prescriptions and concoctions. Finally, at the recommendation of several friends and my dermatologist, I started taking spiranolactone and it is 100% gone! The only other thing I use is a compounded cream before bedtime that has retinA, Alphahydroxy acid, and other skin brightenes mixed in to keep my skin glowing. THe acne was totally hormonal so no amount of surface products fixed the problem.
As one of your older readers (I’m 50), who is often told I have great skin, I thought I’d add a few recommendations –
There are things the “experts” tell you and there are contrary things you just learn from life experience. A big trigger of breakouts for me has been sugar. “They” say there is no connection, but practical experience tells me there is. I don’t know if it has something to do with the insulin, or how it works, but if I eat treats with a high volume of sugar (ie. jellybeans are a favorite) I have learned I will pay for it. So I mostly stay away from sugary snacks. Which is good when you’re 50 -lol.
I’m a fan of shaving your face. Millions of Asian women do it and they have gorgeous skin. It sounds weird, you don’t have to announce it to your friends, I don’t even think my husband knows, but I do it and wish I’d discovered it sooner.
I’m also a big fan of oils. A little goes a long way (I put a little on my hands, rub together, pat on face and then blot with a towel in the shower). Works far better for me than commercial moisturizers.
And lastly, I know we’re supposed to wear sunscreen, but it to this day makes me break out (even the stuff that’s not supposed to make me break out). So I discovered hats. Big hats. Looks a bit silly, but you will thank yourself later. 🙂
I am in love with the Pure Anada natural makeup line. I have been extremely pressed with their natural mascara. I am not associated with them in any way, I just use and LOVE their makeup!
I just adore your little cabinet in your bathroom! I haven’t been able to find a source or link for it – I would love for you to share where you got it from! Thank you in advance x100 🙂
Cheers – Megan!
It was vintage!! I will keep looking too!
Have you tried any of the Young Living Savvy makeup or the Art line? I love so many items Art Gentle Cleanser, Art Renewal Serum (smells delicious), Mirah Cleansing Oil to name a few. Not a fan of the mascara though. I’ve made a glow serum similar to yours and it’s great!
