I was excited when my friend Jen (who is an amazing designer and has a fantastic blog) told me to do the One room Challenge in 6 weeks!
She knew that I had just started on my kitchen remodel and could use a little push.
I love the eclectic feel and dark patterned floors of these kitchens I found on Pinterest. I am a big fan of dark floors in a kitchen. Even though they might (let’s be real, ARE) be dirty, it isn’t glaringly obvious. I also love that the floors are the statement and make white cabinets really pop.
For my own personal space I like to look at images on Pinterest and go back to see what images I keep pinning to see the look I am gravitated towards. It is also a great tool for clients and designers to narrow down the look a client is trying to achieve.
THIS is what we are living with now! We just moved into a 1950’s Cape in Connecticut. I really CAN’T STAND the kitchen. I have felt like I am camping the last two months. Maybe it is the linoleum floors or the fact that we don’t have a garbage disposal or an ice maker or possibly all of the above. The previous home owners had their dining table in a bedroom (that you have to get to by passing the bathroom, gross!) we are now using for our master bedroom. We have to be able to have an eat-in kitchen with kids and how much time we spend in the kitchen doing homework, projects and our favorite, eating!
I knew I wanted all white cabinets, they are timeless and my all time favorite look, I did white when we built my home in 2007.
I decided to keep the existing cabinets and have them re-faced. It is the most cost effective if you aren’t moving cabinets around. Cabinets take the longest so I knew that was my first step. I just googled “cabinet re-facing in Connecticut” and found this company. I researched their reviews and pictures of their work and had them come to get me a bid. I am very excited to see the finish product and to document the process of cabinet re-facing.
Here is my inspiration board.
This is what we are in for the next six weeks and what I will be posting and documenting-
1- Painting walls, shopping for everything and cabinet
re-facing process
2- New retro fridge, stove and oven installation
3- Adding some charm to my plain cream roman shades

4- Patterned floor tile installation and subway tile backsplash
5- New lighting and some updates with spray paint

6- Installing all my white dishes, table, settee, bookcase and new gold accents.
Oh boy! I can’t wait, I actually think out of all those things the icemaker and garbage disposal are what I am dreaming about the most!
I feel your pain, our kitchen is also from the 50s! Right now we are just making some aesthetic changes, and will do a major reno down the line. Looking forward to seeing what you do with yours!
Oh man! But do you have a garbage disposal?!;)
I love when you're ahead of the curve aka white cabinets in 2007! Can't wait to see it.
Ha! Yes, totally ahead;) I just have always loved lighter fabrics and light homes with pips of color! Thanks for reading!
From one camper to another… Yours will be way more epic than mine!!! Love your ideas
