Laundry is actually a REALLY good place to start when examining the toxins in your life. Clothing, sheets, and towels that you wash at home come in direct and constant contact with your skin which is the largest organ in your body. The chemicals found in conventional detergents pass right through your skin and into your bloodstream without any filter! Sharing why “cleaning up” my laundry was the first thing I did and how I did it!
PS- we just added this stripe wallpaper to our laundry pool room and LOVE the happy change!!!
Laundry Detergents contain hormone-disrupting fragrance and fragrance binders (to make that scent last and last) that wreak havoc on your body and confuse your endocrine system. Now I use Thieves Laundry Soap! Thieves is probably the cleanest liquid laundry soap out there, and also has less environmental waste for the same amount of loads! It is 6x’s concentrated and free of toxic chemicals.

Avoid Fragrance-
Fabric Softener and Dryer Balls-
Did you know that most dryer sheets sold today contain Chloroform? It is on the EPA’s Hazardous Waste list as a Neurotoxic and carcinogenic!!! As an alternative and honestly more cost effective, I use wool dryer balls and drop one or two drops of essential oil on the ball. My laundry smells fresh, has no static and no toxins. I personally love to use lemongrass, purification, and lavender- to name a few!
A great natural fabric softener is white vinegar. A half-cup of white vinegar when added to the final rinse will soften fabrics and leave no residue at all. I have been adding vinegar to my towels when I wash them and it works great!
For white clothes I like to boost my laundry with Molly Sud’s Oxygen Whitener. I still add my Thieves Laundry Soap too. I keep my Scent Boost, Molly Sud’s and Epsom Salt in THESE Jars.
If you are looking for a scent booster, skip the store bought scent booster, with all the ingredients of words we can’t pronounce. Easily make your own natural scent booster at home! You only need 3 things. Epsom Salt, Baking Soda and Essential Oils. Epsom salt will completely dissolve in water and is just the ‘vehicle’ to get the scent into your laundry – it may also add a little softening as well. The baking soda is a natural deodorizer and helps keep your laundry bright! This is a MUCH cheaper option for boosting that scent.
Laundry Scent Boost Recipe-
- Epsom Salt or Sea Salt- 1 1/2 C
- Baking Soda- 1/2 C
- Essential Oils – 20-30 drops
- Combine all the ingredients well. Let sit to air dry a bit and then transfer into a glass jar with lid. THAT’S IT!!! Add 1/4 to 1/2 cup into your wash. Right into the drum with the clothes.
Laundry Hacks-
The above recipes are all the ways to get the most out of your laundry experience when you switch to plant based! For tough stains, I just dab some Thieves Dish Soap as my spot treatment. Has always worked so well for me!
Stay Organized-
We have tall cupboards above my washer and dryer in our Primary Bedroom. My favorite organizing item in them is this acrylic lazy susan! It’s tall so it can hold a lot but I can just spin to find what I need. Like dryer balls and lint rollers. Different compartments to keep items in place. We also have these see-through bins so I can clearly see what’s inside (forces us to stay organized, ha!) and then just easy to pull down. I have these glass jars for Molly Suds Whitener and for my DIY Scent Booster. Find all my favorite cleaning products HERE!

Laundry Dilution Hack-
I can use and stick to the suggested amount on the Thieves Laundry Soap directions, and it’s a small amount! But my girls are a little heavy handed. Sharing how you can double your Thieves Laundry soap to last longer!
DOUBLE YOUR LAUNDRY HACK
- 1 bottle Thieves Laundry Soap
- 1 empty bottle Thieves Laundry Soap filled with water
- 6 capfuls Thieves Cleaner Concentrate
- 20-30 drops Lemon Essential Oil
- Add all ingredients to a drink dispenser and stir (I doubled this recipe to fill this dispenser)
Keep your Machines Clean-
Knowing how to clean a washing machine is one of those cleaning hacks you may not think about doing until a smell comes from the laundry room! To get rid of smells from a front-loading machine, use soapy water or your Thieves all-purpose cleaner to thoroughly clean out the residue from the rubber seal around the door.
Then, pour 2 cups of vinegar into your drum, 1/2 cup of baking soda and 1 cap of Thieves cleaner. Scrub the drum well then start the wash on the hottest cycle. You can also put 1 cup vinegar into your detergent dispenser and run your washer on the hottest cycle.
In an ideal world, you should be cleaning your washing machine about once a month.
