Living Room and Painted Piano Makeover for Deserving Single Mom

I am excited to share this makeover today with you. About 4 months ago a sweet family in our community lost someone very dear. Jd, husband and father to five, was hit by a motorcycle right in front of his home. So heartbreaking. My good friend Kelly is neighbors with the family. I was talking to Kelly about the tragedy, wondering what we could do for Lindsey and her five kids, who are grieving. We decided to surprise them and makeover the first room you see when you walk into their home. The room that set’s the tone and feeling for what is to come. We wanted to give them a peaceful place to be.

Living Room Before-

This room is open to the entry with vaulted ceilings that connect to the rest of the main floor. They had a great feature wall that I wanted to highlight. And Lindsey had only one request, the piano stay in the room.

Living Room After-

First thing we did was paint the room in a beautiful creamy white, Cloud White from Benjamin Moore. I love how the feature wall is still a focal point, even tho there isn’t a huge contrast in color. We left the feature wall the original bright white. And peep that piano! Keep reading for all the details and sources.
Lindsey said in the 13 years they have lived here she always hated this room. She didn’t know what to do with furniture because of the shape of the room. And she said her even hated the large fiddle leaf figs, (yes, I gasped!), she felt they were in the way and an awkward size.
Lindsey 100% changed her view of this room after we spent a day there and even embraced the fiddle leaf figs!

  • Sofa– the price of $365 can’t be beat! We were impressed with the comfort and style
  • Patterned Pillows– such cute pillows, they have zippers, and we even left the insert that came in them
  • Rug– 8×10 $296 washable rug
  • Round Glass Coffee Table– $85, really so pretty and light airy look
  • Arch Floor Lamp– love the texture this lamp adds to the room and warm glow
  • Gold Mirror on piano– amazing mirror, reminds me of the Anthropologie one I have for a lot less $
  • Faux Fur Rug– added this to the piano bench, adds coziness and texture
  • Desk Lamp– I didn’t order this, but it would be a really nice piano light
  • White Planter– cute planter for a plant
  • Curtain Panels– we did two of these in four spots between each window
  • Serenity Prayer Art– this spoke to me for this sweet family
  • Blush Bungalow Art– gorgeous and brought in the colors in the rug and piano

Very happy with this rug! It can sometimes be tricky buying a rug online, but this Rug is a win! It was $296 for an 8×10 and it is a washable rug! It is light weight, so to keep it from bunching we put a screw right through each corner of the rug, right into the carpet. Keeps the rug in place, she can easily remove the screws if you want to move it or wash it.
There weren’t any curtains in this room. I knew that it would need some color on the walls and drama, curtains were just the thing. I used these Curtain Panels– we did two of these in four spots between each window. I like how the dark gray ties in the gray sofa on the opposite side of the room.
We used a regular curtain rod and just added these elbow connectors to each corner to make the curve.
Very impressed with this Sofa– the price of $365 can’t be beat! It is comfortable and nice modern style. The floor lamp adds the right amount of soft glow and texture.
I gave her some pillows I already had as a base and added in the Patterned Pillows from Walmart. Such cute pillows, they have zippers, and we even left the insert that came in them.
Went with a this Round Glass Coffee Table, I liked the modern simple look. Plus it is light and airy, important since it was right in the center where you walk in. Bonus, it is only $85, again from Walmart.
I hadn’t seen the room in person until yesterday when we went to do the makeover. From the photos I saw I thought the piano was a wood piano that she might not want painted. But when we got to the house, I could see the piano had been painted once before and was chipping in areas. Kelly and I immediately decided the piano needed a fresh coat of paint and in a fun color….
We took a risk and painted Piano in Behr Chalk Paint, Tinted in Dead Salmon from Farrow & Ball (they have the formula at Home Depot). We did notice she had pink in other areas of her home, so it wasn’t too risky! We love Chalk Paint because you can really paint over anything with it. No sanding required. After the paint dried we applied Behr Wax to prevent it from chipping.
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this gold mirror on the piano. Reminds me of my Anthropologie one and this Walmart mirror is a lot less money and I actually like it more than mine!
Added a faux fur small rug on the bench for some texture and to brighten up the piano. I have one too!
She had a matching sofa and loveseat in this room, I decided to break up the set and just leave the sofa. Two sofa’s facing each other not only add balance to the room, but create a great conversation spot!
And the fiddle leaf fig is gorgeous here, adds the right amount of drama and height.

My mother-in-law gave me this dresser and it fit this spot wonderfully. We put piano music in it.

    It is beautiful! It’s amazing what you can do with a room – you are so talented. I wanted to ask about the wax that you apply after the chalk paint. Does it need a certain amount of time to cure, or can the furniture be used right away?

    This room turned out great!! Tell me, which is more true to the colors of the area rugs, your photos or Walmart’s photos? I ask bc I really love the colors in your photos. The colors are great, but in the Walmart photo not so good for what I’m looking for. Thanks? I pray this family is finding peace as they move forward in their journey.
