Ceilings- Another Wall to Design- How I Designed our 8′ Ceilings

In a New York Times Article it said exactly what I believe, “When you’re decorating a room, it’s easy to obsess over what’s covering the floor and the walls. But what about the ceiling? It rarely gets much attention — beyond a coat of flat, white paint. And that’s a missed opportunity.” We have 8′ ceilings throughout our home and with shorter ceilings like that, they are very noticeable. They feel like the fifth wall in a room. We have added shiplap to several ceilings in our house, painted the ceiling a contrasting color, added wood beams and recently wallpapered our entry ceiling. Hopefully this gives you can idea to pay attention to the ceiling, beyond a flat coat of white paint!

Entry Ceiling Before-

We have sparrow wallpaper on our entry walls and it felt like they needed to continue to the ceilings. We thought about adding shiplap and paining it a color, but was worried how to trim around that rock wall. Seemed tricky!

Enter After Sparrow Wallpaper-

So we went for it and hung the sparrows on the ceiling!!! Makes me so happy, and all the kids commented how fun it is. The entry now feels like a cozy room to greet our guests!
We also painted the wood trim detailing in Hague Blue from Farrow & Ball (we had it color matched at Sherwin Willams in semi-gloss). It was a green before and I love the blue so much more!!! It really goes well with our vintage rug.
It wasn’t easy to hang the wallpaper on our ceiling, but I will say it was easier than I thought it would be. I personally think it was a two person job, especially for the longer pieces. Patience and a partner are the key to hanging wallpaper!
The Hague Blue and Sparrow Wallpaper continues around to the bedroom and bathroom doors.

Ceiling Shiplap Over Stairs-

Hope that gives you ideas on adding some character to your ceiling!
You can see a peek here where we added shiplap to the ceiling up the stairs and painted it to match our office bookcases in Sulking Room Pink. Again, just added some interest to a low ceiling, we did it over both sets of stairs.

Stripe Wallaper-

We added Stripe Wallpaper to our laundry room ceiling and love how much character it added!

Wood Ceiling-

This wood ceiling is original to our house, I loved this wood ceiling so much, we just softened the orange tones by pickling the wood (info here).

Patio Wood Ceiling-

We added cedar wood to the ceiling on our covered porch, love the texture it added and brought in the lighter color of the rock on our home. See how we did it HERE.

Girls Room Ceiling-

This is what it looked like before we painted.
And the after! The girls bedrooms both had shiplap on their ceiling, we had the same people who did our finish work do the ceiling. After living in our house for two years, we had it painted to match their bookcase, trim, and doors in Light Blue from Farrow and Ball. The ceiling painted the same color made it feel extra cozy.
I feel like the ceiling painted makes it more of a focal point and you can see the shiplap more.

Dining Room Ceiling-

In our dining room we added beams, with 8′ ceilings it made it feel taller. I would love to add shiplap between the beams, maybe one day!

Bunk Bed DIY- Bedding for bunk bed- twin bedding ideas-
Finn star wallpaper ceiling we hired someone to hang when I was pregnant with Finn. I was impressed Marcin, hung it all by himself!

Also we added shiplap to our office, this is what it looked like before without the ceiling painted.
The after! Adding shiplap to our office and painting it the same color as or trim and doors tied everything together with the wallpaper!

    I wasn’t sure when you said that you were going to paint the ceilings….but your instincts were right, and it looks beautiful! Same with the wallpapered ceiling. Love it all😍
