Living in a small space has been a learning curve. I can move something an inch and be like…YES! why didn’t I do that before? Seriously. Small homes or small rooms for that matter have to be maximized, everything has to serve a purpose or it is out. I talked about this new Secretary Desk I found a couple weeks ago. As soon as I saw it I knew I had to have it in our small house. I had a small dresser by our front door before, I did like the dresser for storage but it was old and the drawers didn’t open too well- it was frustrating. So it got cut. I am not sure if this Secretary Desk will stay in this space (I have another idea for it). But for now I am LOVING the functionality of it. ** UPDATE- until 8-22 use code AUGUST to save an EXTRA 15% off to the already 30% off! HURRY!
The style stole my heart first then the functionality. You know I love brass and gold accents- the hardware is on point.
I am
kind of a furniture snob. All my years working for a high-end design firm (started when I was 15 years old!) has made me spoiled. I got a really good discount on furniture and accessories. So everything I ever owned were real quality pieces. Case and point- my husband has never had to assemble furniture until this Secretary Desk. When he started to do it I almost said “never mind, I am taking it back.” Just because I was super worried about the quality and it holding up. But after a couple of long hours of assembly…I really love it. It doesn’t look cheap and the drawers glide out so nicely! I added a small little lamp inside that can plug in out the back. I like that I can still be working on a project or paperwork and just close it up when my kids get home from school. I also like the Secretary in the front room so I can work if Finn is playing with toys in here. Rather than at the kitchen table where I used to work. (I use THIS little stool up to it, these are tiny…but fit in this space well and are actually ok to sit on).
What do you think? Isn’t it a great new piece in our small house? I am considering it in our master bedroom or even when my big white sideboard is moved out… I could do it there. So stay tuned! Click on other Secretary Desks below that I found to shop! You can find my Secretary Desk HERE.
Love it! Great choice for your space.
thanks Tracey!
The pink piano is so perfect and inspirational! Did you paint it and what color? Great concept! Thanks.
thank you! Yes we painted it:) I wrote a post about it here- http://nestingwithgrace.com/painted-piano-soft-pink-chalk-paint/
Wow! That looks great! It’s probably so much easier to do work in there, like you said, while Finn plays. And I like how you can close it up to save little hands from dragging anything off of it.
Thanks Clarissa! Yes, It is so practical for us!
Love the secretary desk! I have one, too and like you said, it is great to just close the lid and “clutter-be-gone”. It fits your space perfectly, and it is great that you have so many other places in your home that you can use it. I particularly loved the photo of your children playing with the empty secretary with their toys! They may have some ideas on its functionality and placement, too! Enjoy!
Looks awesome. I love the challenge of a small space–I don’t know if it’s from being a little girl with a playroom or playhouse or trying to get my Barbie’s house just-so…but I think it’s fun and so rewarding.
I have always loved secretaries and they come in so many variations to fit any style. Great choice. I love how your room has come together! Do you have a link for the small lamp with your marble base, the lamp shown is a cloche style? Thanks
yes! I just noticed I linked the wrong one. Here it is….http://rstyle.me/~a3KXq
I love a secretary desk!! We have 2 in our home. One down by our entry (I hung command hooks on the side that I spray painted copper for an extra place to hang jackets, etc. and make it part of our ‘drop zone’) and one up in our guest room, which is my office (I do work from home about 50% of the time). Aren’t they great? Although I should hang a ‘do not enter’ sign on my office one, since it’s also our guest room. It’s a tad messy. haha! 😀
I liked both this and the navy when you posted about them, but this color definitely looks awesome in your space. Enjoy!
I love it too! Those pillows are amazing! Where did you get them?!
Thanks! The white ones are from here- http://rstyle.me/~9I75u

One of the first purchases my husband and I made when we got married was an antique English secretary desk. We used it to pay bills, sort mail, and store our important papers and documents. We felt like real adults. Later on, we used it as an end table, accent piece, in various rooms as we moved, but always found a place for the secretary. It has now been in our daughter’s home for several years, being reborn as the family command center, now an accent piece, etc. We bought that piece many years ago, covered in grime and dust for $45. The value to our family is priceless. Enjoy your secretary for the function, and style it will bring to your home, and maybe some memories along the way.
I love that story! If our furniture could talk:)
That’s an awesome piece! I love secretaries. I was looking for one last year and searched and searched for one with a hutch on top to display books. Finally I found an antique one with lots of storage and painted it gray. I love that they double as desks yet are living room friendly and just look like a pretty piece of furniture!
It is hard to find antique secretaries. That is so great! I bet you will love it forever.
