Hello!
I have been asked a handful of times- “what is on the other side of your fridge?”
No? You haven’t asked that?
Well I am going to tell you, I am sure you are totally interested now.
It is actually one of the hardest 2’x2′ working spots in our home. It really is all about maximizing every inch in a small kitchen, actually a small home for that matter.
First I wanted to show you what inspired this space in our kitchen. I found THIS photo from Country Living Magazine. This home has a small kitchen too and a small home actually. I wish I had room for a little desk too…but what really inspired me was how they finished off the fridge with an antique door. It separates the space and really adds some charm. Now I wish mine was as glamours as their space. It is not. But it is really a practical space.
So I found a door. I was shopping with a friend of mine, Denise who came to visit us for the weekend. We were out antique shopping and I was thrilled when I found this door, because I knew exactly where I wanted to put it. We did have to trim it down so it was the same height as the fridge, but that was an easy fix. And give it a fresh coat of paint.
I strung string across the front in several spots and spray painted cloths pins in gold to clip the every changing and every growing art. (I used command strips to attach the door to the fridge to keep it from tipping over).
When we moved in we hung my Letter Organizer and Letter Bin. This is where we keep scissors, tape, batteries, wrapping paper, cards and all the stuff you keep in a “junk drawer”. It is the best to have this little station in our kitchen. We open it daily. It keeps us organized in a small home.
THIS light is another piece that is much needed here. Our home was built in the 1950’s there is not a light switch when you walk into the kitchen from off of the main hall. The light switch is over by the back door. We added a plug to this pendant light (like we showed how to do on THIS post). And we hung it right here to turn on for those late night snacks and for extra light over in this area of our kitchen.
At the end of the day we appreciate this little spot in our kitchen. It is all about making the best use of your space if it is a 1100 square foot house or 5000 square feet. Make it work and everything convenient.
Now you can say you have seen it all, I have no more secrets. Well maybe just a few, like what’s in our basement:)

This post just made my day. I’m totally guilty of being one of those who have asked about this side of your fridge. I literally have the exact same layout and am embarrassed to say mine has garbage cans on that side right now. But not anymore-I can’t wait to transform that little space of mine. Thank you for sharing and for the inspiration. My absolute favorite blog!!!!
I should I showed the before!!! There was totally a garbage on that side of the fridge. Now it it under our sink. I like it SO much better there.
And I appreciate your kind words:)
A door! Genius! I may have to do this in our upstairs mother-in-law apartment kitchen. I love a good built-in-looking refrigerator, + your vintage-looking cutie is adorable.
Thank you! I appreciate that:) Good luck with your project!
Hey girl- love the space! SO cool!
Thank you for sharing !!!!! Love this !!!!!!
Thank you for your comment!
We also own a Cape Cod House. Our kitchen is half our living room – the other half is the dining room. Our switches are also next to the back door. Why would they do that????? Hopefully we will have our ceiling replaced in the kitchen with wood, a couple of pot lights and hanging pendants over my butcher block and when they do that, I will also get a switch on the correct side of the kitchen. We had an energy audit done 2 years ago and they installed a LED bulb over our sink and we leave that light on all the time so you don’t kill yourself when you walk in the kitchen.
how exciting for you!! That is smart to do a LED bulb. Who knew!
Good luck with your changes!
Wow ! I had no idea how small your kitchen really was! I love how you make it so incredibly beautiful, it doesn’t always have to be bigger to look good!
Thank you so much! YES, when we have guests come they always say how it looks so much bigger in photos:)
What is inside the cabinet with the chalkboard doors?
It has wrapping paper- cards- pens- scissors- tape:) basically a junk drawer!
