My parents have lived in the home I grew up in since I was about one. Friends have come and gone, but they are just happy where they are. Their yard is great with a garden and bees and the location is very central to everything including family and work. But what wasn’t working was their entertaining space, it was very chopped up. And with how much they host, they needed a wall to come down!!!
Below is the photos of what their space looked like before. You would walk into a living room on the left, with a wall on your right separating an unused bedroom that they had two recliners sitting in. You can see how they took down the wall and opened it up! They added wood floor throughout too. When Kevin and I visited for Christmas we helped them finish up their hard work and pull it all together!
Thank you Hayneedle for sponsoring this post
Last week I shared how we gave their dark rock fireplace a makeover, but we just couldn’t leave the other side alone! Today I am going to share how we did a really quick mini update with some affordable furniture and Joanna Gaines peel and stick wallpaper. Everything we ordered was from Hayneedle! I loved that I could get it quick before the Holidays and it also was REALLY well priced for the quality and style.
If you look at the before photo and the after photo they look completely different, so much brighter! The wall color stayed the same, but the main focal wall and main large piece of furniture sets the tone for the entire space. Just changing those two things transformed the room! Starting with the main focal point wall is always a good place to start!
Wallpaper-
This was so easy to install!! It is from Joanna Gaines, sold on Hayneedle. It is pre-pasted wallpaper. That means is already has the glue on the back, you just have to spray the back of the wallpaper with water and “book it” (fold it on top of each other). The wallpaper comes with instructions, very easy to manipulate and adjust too. (Find wallpaper HERE– comes in other colors).
Console-
When I search online for something to put the TV on I don’t search for “tv console” I search for just a “sideboard” or “console”. I found this white console for around $350 on Hayneedle. It is the perfect height and width! Also loved the simple brass knobs. Completely changed the look of this room by going with white and something not as overpowering for a small living space.
Coffee Table-
Before they were using a large ottoman as their coffee table, it matched the sofa and chair and a half they had. It was all too “matchy” and really didn’t fit their lifestyle of hosting a lot of people and feeding them! Now with the larger round table it is another spot to gather around and even sit a plate of food on or grandkids to do a puzzle on! You really can find so many great coffee tables for under $150. This coffee table has a faux marble top and pretty gold base.
Chairs
The large matching set had a chair and a 1/2 that was way too big and deep for their living room space. It cut into the sofa. So I got them these wood accent chairs (in beige). They are really comfortable and modern. The wood on the arms matches their wood floors so nicely too. So very happy with these chairs!!!
We kept their current sofa because it works just great. It is really deep and fits my tall dad well. I just switched up the pillows! They had those 4 matching pillows spread out through the house, so I gathered them up and put them together to make more of a statement and contrast the sofa nicely. Before it had all matching pillows to the sofa.
Another thing I did was added two curtain panels on either side of the window to make the window appear larger. Before she had sheer white curtain panels that washed out the room, now the green/blue to contrast nicely with the wallpaper! The rug was hard to quickly get the right size. An 8×10 was way too big, a 7×9 would have been perfect. I ended up grabbing a 5×8 rug to finish it off before Christmas and it works nicely for now (only came in 5×8)! (this rug is similar and comes in more sizes than just 5×8).
Hopefully this mini makeover shows that little changes go a long way! In this space I spent around $1200 for the main pieces of furniture and wallpaper all from Hayneedle. It worked out perfect to get their home ready for the Holidays and all the hosting they will be doing in the New Year!
So pretty and fresh. What a way to start the new year! And the design is so you which is why I love following you! Great style!! And lucky parents.
It looks so pretty!! Can you show us what you did with the built ins on the wall next to the fireplace? Looking for storage ideas and my layout seems similar to theirs!
