If you missed it, we sadly had to remove 7 of our Spruce Trees because beetles attacked them (if you have Spruce Trees, make sure to have them sprayed!) There were three trees removed behind our little shed in our backyard. We decided since we now had the space, we would want a building for our home gym, and move it out of the garage, to free up garage space. We had plans drawn up, and submitted them to the city, so we could start building a gym! Keep reading the see the LVP we used, the cost to build the gym and more…
This is the area we had the gym built. Where the shed, trees and large rocks were. We moved the shed to another spot in our yard, along with the large rocks. We ended up having about 25’x30′ to work with!
Gym Now-
The front of the gym is 14′ and drops down to 9′ in the back. Overall the gym is about 25’x25′. This building cost us about $125k to build. Kevin is planning on doing some sports medicine and training in here too (he has a master in Sports Medicine, and has a workout app HERE). Our Architect is Wheeler Design.
The exterior is painted the same color of our home, and we did the same siding to match. Find details on the exterior of our home HERE. Pool and Pavers HERE.
Paint Colors-
Paint on Exterior– Blacktop from Benjamin Moore
Paint on Trim– Tricorn Black Sherwin Williams
Fence– Tricorn Black Sherwin Williams this gel stain (stain and sealer)
Lights and Doors-
We did matching polished copper lights to the lights on our home. The doors are from High Country Iron Doors, it is a new business, but same as the doors on our home too (contact is my nephew, Tanner Hansen 1-435-705-9693).

Interior of Gym-
Kevin’s step-dad was our contractor (he is retired now) but he did such a great job! We had them add shiplap to the walls, and do the same beams we have in our home. We painted the walls the same white we did in our home too, All White Farrow & Ball (our painter color matched it). Went with light walls so it didn’t look like a black hole from the outside since the exterior is black too.
Floors are LVP. We went with Stockbridge Oak Ridge Core, and love them (my friend Laila, has in her home and I loved them there)! We were going to do the same floor we had in our current garage gym (which we like) but I wanted a different look since it is open to our pool and backyard, wanted it to be lighter. I also like the option of using this space if needed for other things than just a gym. We don’t plan on dropping weights, we do tap the floor for deadlifts but don’t drop it from very high.
Also went with two ceiling fans, seemed like a practical idea for a gym!
Favorite Home Gym Equipment-
- Adjustable Bench– Adjustable bench is a great option and allows you to do so many more exercises than a standard bench.
- Foam Plyo Box– We have had this for a year, and love that it is soft, but holds the shape when you jump on it. Great for speed and agility training.
- Portable Speaker– Make workout more fun with a portable speaker, take with you anywhere!
- Fitness Ab Mat – We like how this makes it so our back doesn’t rub on the ground and get sore when we do sit-ups. Extra cushion and actually makes sit-ups a little easier.
- Resistance Bands – These are a great option if you don’t have workout equipment. Or, even if you do, a great addition! Kevin highly recommends bands for any level of fitness.
- Yoga Mat– this one is extra thick, great to use when you do lunges to protect knees and any workout on the floor you get extra support.
- Dumbells Rubber– Hex shape dumbells are the best, you can use them for pushups and more. Plus they stack nicely for storage.
- Kettlebell– You can really do most everything with a kettlebell, full body workout!
- Wall Mount Pull-up Bar– Pull-ups are on of the best total body exercises and bar can be used to attach bands to allow you to do even more.
- Workout Bands– Functional and a great way to vary your workouts, also so many uses.
- Kevin’s workout app is very affordable and a great gift for the person who expressed a desire to start moving!

Inside our Gym with Equipment-
This space is done! We have been working out here for the past week and are SO happy with it! I will walk you around each area….
We do have a wall mount heater and air conditioner in here! I am most excited for the heat, our garage gym got really cold. Also yes, you will see several plants in here, this space was screaming for it, with all the windows. Plus plants are great for the air quality!
We have had that clock from Rogue for a while. You will see them at all CrossFit gyms. It has a Tibabta timer along with a bunch of other settings.
Finn got the little kid weight rack and bar for Christmas one year. He mostly uses the bar, and the girls use it in workouts too! Also the tree rack for the weights is from HERE.
As far as cardio equipment goes, it is all right here. We have a rower, which is a great all over body workout and doesn’t need to be plugged in. We also have a Peloton Bike and Peloton Treadmill, really love both of them. The girls like to do the Peloton workouts occasionally, and Kevin and I do them too. We use all three in our workouts daily, just not following a Peloton class.
Most of our weights and rack are from Rogue. We like the large rig to do pull-ups on, squats and more.
I shared the art and banners we hung in here below.
Love the pop of color, without being too distracting from the view outside the gym with all the open windows.
We tried to keep the middle open to do workouts. Finn and I really love to jump rope too!
You can see we have a view of our pool and backyard from the large open windows, which we love!
I was most excited to have tall ceilings so we could add a climbing rope! I missed rope climbs at CrossFit, so we brought it here.
Kevin is really excited about this cold plunge situation! He has the Nordic Wave. The water doesn’t spill out, and the water covers his shoulders!
In this corner is an Audrey Ficus, we got the planter local at Cactus & Tropicals.
Hung this wall rack to hang towels on, it fit this vertical space perfectly!
Finn, so cute watching over his dad! I will not be getting in this, but Ella said she is excited for it after soccer games.
And this side of the gym we did the Lockers, which have one shelf inside. I liked them because they are 12″ deep and fit the space just right. We put things like a vacuum, a spot to hang a jacket, and store sports tape etc.
Also moved our Wesco trash can out here, I ordered a different color for our basement. And moved our Rubber Tree’s in here from our home office. They soften the space and add color, plus they can now grow really tall.
We hung a 65″ Frame TV with the teak frame out here and it looks like art! My friend Laila was over and thought it was art, since we used a photo I took of Cinque Terra as the screen saver. I put the TV box behind the Rubber Tree’s and tucked the cord in the shiplap.

It looks amazing! Love the white. So happy for you, especially the high ceilings for rope climbs. Plus it’s high enough to do muscle ups on the rig. You could even hang rings later on if you like ring work. Very fun!!! Thank you for sharing!
