Star Tile Bathroom Refresh and biggest house regret- Tile Mistakes!!

I have one big regret with our remodel. Tile, and it all comes down to installation. We remodeled our entire home about 5 years ago. We added a second floor, basically took every wall down to the framing. We loved a lot about the house, but cosmetically it was stuck in the 80’s and needed new electrical. All that being said there was a lot happening at once. Sharing my experience, in hopes it helps you! Also sharing a bathroom I just refreshed and fell back in love with.

First let’s talk about this cute star bathroom mini makeover, which made me like it a little more. The mirror I installed in here 5 years ago, I gave to a room makeover, so it needed a new mirror and a few things. Started off the project with this new white scallop mirror, it is perfect!

At first glance the tile looks great. But it has a lot of flaws, obviously really dirty here, but the placement of the stars was not thought out. My regret is assuming they would ask me or make sure that everything made sense when installing. I am sharing this so hopefully you don’t regret your tile too. Notice the stars on the very far shower wall, the cuts make no sense. And the placement on the floor, so random, and not in a good way. The ledge of the shower was the worst (we did fix that, see below).
We had a contractor, a “tile boss” and tile employees who were installing basically everything at once. Each installer under the same umbrella had different levels of experience. The installer in our bathroom asked me about every detail and we talked about doing four coats of sealant. He did samples for me and everything. The people installing our basement tiles just started without asking any questions, and I regret not making sure they had direction from us or our contractor.
Back to the mini makeover. We do not “need” a shower curtain on the glass, but want it for pattern, texture, color and it is a great idea if you have multiple people getting ready at once!
I layered two shower curtains here to create that ruffle on the top! I just folded and ironed the curtain to the height of the small stripe. Then used ring clips to clip it all together! So simple and it added the most fun detail!

Another Tile Regret-

Biggest tip is to go over EVERY detail with tile. Where you want them to start so they are no odd cuts. Placement, sealing, everything. Write it all down. Do not assume all tile installers or contractors pay attention to details. We need to re-do the tile in this plaid bathroom. It has looked this way from day one, at first I thought it just needed to be cleaned. Wrong. We have tried EVERYTHING. We are going to rip it out. Leave the subway tile on the shower wall. I will share that soon, we just ordered the new tile.

    That’s really too bad! I can’t believe the stars are not all going in the same direction! As for the ends where you just see little points, you’d think the installer would’ve suggested a solid tile to be a boarder rather than seeing the little points sticking out all around. My daughter is having a bathroom put in her home now and the contractor is a nightmare!! After her many complaints they agreed to rip out all the tile in the shower and send in a new crew to redo it. It now looks professionally done as one would expect! She wasn’t taking any chances with the floor and did it herself! It’s looks great!! Your taste is exquisite so I know it will all turn out amazing. Love all the textures, colors and patterns too!!
