A Room of Her Own: A Sweet, Girly Makeover

Seeing Ellie’s room for the first time, I’ll be honest, I was excited to tackle it! Ellie has a twin brother, and they’ve always shared a room, so this is her very first space of her own, decorated just for her, sweet and girly. The 90’s walls, tricky window angles, and soaring ceilings were a bit intimidating at first, but I love a good challenge… and this one turned out to be so much fun!

Ellie Bedroom Before

With a few thoughtful changes, the room completely transformed. The first thing we tackled was the wall rail. It sat low and visually made the 2nd half of the room seem so tall, so raising it was a must. We added beadboard instead, instantly giving the space more height and character. Even better? We painted both the beadboard and the trim the exact same color as the wallpaper base. It was color matched perfectly.

To keep the dramatic ceiling pitch and angled spaces from stealing the spotlight, we painted them the same color also. That simple move helped everything blend together and made the room feel calmer and more cohesive.

And then came the wallpaper… the final touch that truly brought the space to life. I am *obsessed* with this color combination! We also shifted the bed to face the windows, which completely changed how the room feels. Being able to fully walk into the space makes it feel more open and inviting.

A Creative Cabinet

I found the sweetest vintage cabinet on Facebook Marketplace, and while it needed some TLC, I knew it would be perfect for Ellie’s space.

We added a few extra screws for stability, replaced some worn wood, and filled in small holes with caulk to give it a fresh start. To tie it into the room, I lined the back and sides with the same wallpaper used on her walls (with a staple gun) and painted the entire piece a beautiful butter yellow. (*Hay* by Farrow & Ball).

Because crafting is what Ellie loves most, we wanted this cabinet to be both functional and personal. We added adhesive cork to the inside of the doors so she can hang her artwork and display her creations.

The purple ruffled baskets were such a fun find and match the room perfectly while keeping supplies organized. We also added a pleated storage ottoman to sit next to her cabinet, perfect for extra storage and a cozy spot to perch while crafting.

We finished off her new creative cabinet with a small cordless wicker lamp and a heart-shaped dish for push pins.

We also swapped in a white light fixture that’s a great scale for her room. I love the shades. They’re simple, classic, and add just the right amount of softness.

A Bed to Love

Ellie is absolutely loving her bed. She’s even excited to make it every morning. When something feels special, you naturally want to take care of it! The dark wood bed frame adds such a classic, timeless look and grounds all the soft colors in the room. The spindles are my favorite detail, they feel traditional and a little storybook.

We started with a waterproof mattress protector (because… kids, you know). It has a little extra padding too, which adds just the right amount of comfort. Next came the blue botanical sheets. Cooling, soft, and perfect for sleeping. On top, we layered the most buttery-soft quilt. It’s double-sided with a yellow floral on one side and a soft cream floral on the other, finished with the cutest scalloped edges.

For extra coziness, we added our favorite extra-full duvet inside a reversible duvet cover that matches the sheets, with a blue botanical print on one side and a blue plaid on the other. So cozy and fun to switch up! We finished the bed with layered pillows: two sleeping pillows, two quilted pillows in the same yellow and cream floral as the quilt, and two Euro pillows in the matching duvet pattern to tie it all together.

At the foot of the bed, I placed a long cushioned bench upholstered in a dusty blue fabric with soft red and pink florals. The ruffled skirt adds such a charming, feminine touch and brings a little extra texture to the space. It’s the perfect finishing piece. Pretty, practical, and a great spot for sitting, stacking books, or laying out tomorrow’s outfit.

We layered the space with a new jute rug finished with a blue scalloped border, which adds texture while tying in the blue tones throughout the room. Above the bed, we hung a folk art dove canvas. The soft blue tones were the perfect match for the nightstand, and the simple design keeps it from competing with the wallpaper. Such pretty art!

Bedside Details

Next to the bed, we chose a large blue nightstand. Ellie has a generous closet for her clothes, so this piece works perfectly for extra storage. The white floral drawer pulls instantly upgrade the nightstand and add a sweet, feminine touch.

I also love how tall it is next to the bed, it feels substantial. We finished it off with a larger, matching wicker lamp and plant for a bit of life.

And of course a diffuser, which is a must for me in every bedroom. I put the essential oils in this darling little trinket holder!

Cozy Window Seat + Mini DIY

We love a good window seat, and this one quickly became a favorite spot in Ellie’s room! We elevated the space with a plug-in wall sconce for soft lighting and added a custom window cushion to make it extra cozy. We hid the cord by paint and wallpapering this cord cover.

I had the cutest quilt with delicate stitched details that made the cushion feel totally custom. We pulled the quilt tight over the foam, stapled it to the underside of the wood base, flipped it over and just like that, we had a sturdy, darling custom window seat. Simple, budget-friendly, and such a cozy little nook for reading, crafting, or daydreaming.

DIY Window Seat Cushion

Plywood cut to size
4″ memory foam
Quilt or thick fabric (or a rug! We did that in my sisters kitchen HERE)
Staple gun + staples
Scissors

Cut plywood and foam to fit your window seat area.
Place the quilt (or fabric) on a flat surface.
Lay your memory foam on top. Then your cut plywood, making sure it’s centered on fabric.
Pull the fabric tight over the foam and wood, staple the fabric to the wood working your way around and keeping corners neat.
Flip it over, and you’ve got a sturdy, cozy, custom window seat cushion!
Relax! This is such an easy way to add charm and comfort, and using a quilt with stitched details makes it feel completely custom without the custom price tag.
