White Walls to a Cozy Blue Wallpaper Room

I met Dave and Jenny Butler through instagram! I had been following him for a while on his podcast and on his social media. He has a religious podcast (called Don’t Miss This) that I have always found to be exactly what I needed to hear, and they have sent such kind uplifting messages. I wanted to see if I could do something for them, and give them a restful space that reflected their interests and personalities. I asked if I could give them a bedroom makeover! Luckily they agreed, so I put together a plan and we got started! Sharing ways to make a large room look inviting and cozy.

Bedroom Design Plan-

Bedroom Before-

They had some great pieces to start out with! Loved their bed and nightstands. We just wanted to add some personalized art, cozy new bedding and set a cozy moody tone.

After with Dark Walls-

Dave and Jenny have a nice big room. My goal was to make it a cozy space for them! Choosing a dark color for the walls helps create a more intimate vibe in a room. I knew I wanted to wallpaper and loved this dark blue Wallpaper with a subtle floral pattern. (PS- it was really bright in their room when I took these photos, hard with makeovers because I basically have to take the pictures when I am there, even if the lightning isn’t the best for photos).

Big Fluffy Bedding-

A fluffy duvet and plush pillows is the perfect way to make your room look inviting and so comfortable. I’ve wanted to use this washed denim bedding for quite a while! It’s fun to see the same bed with a different look!

Fluffy Bedding Favorites-

  • Mattress Pad– this mattress pad is cooling, a layer of comfort and protection
  • Sheet Set – the one we used is out of stock so found one similar- LOVE a pattern on a set of sheets, and these are just so cute in the green. Plus it helps to brighten up the dark wallpaper.
  • Shams– I love the print on these, very vintage inspired
  • Duvet Insert– my go-to duvet insert! I like that this duvet is organic, and very fluffy!
  • Duvet– love this duvet! Looks like your favorite pair of jeans, with darling detailed stitching (my photos are making the color look a lot lighter, it looks just like the color on their website).
  • Quilt–a quilt for warmer weather, which is perfect on the end of the bed to grab as it gets cooler. Tufted stitching, super soft!
  • Sham Inserts– quality inserts make the bed! These are great for decorative pillows, and if you like a full fluffy pillow, you might like to sleep with too!
  • Euros shams–with king beds I always use 3 euro shams. These match the duvet.
  • Euro Sham inserts– I prefer thick, down filled inserts. These are a favorite.
 Above the bed is the French Watercolor, tied in all the colors of the room! Reminds me of Europe, the original dates back to the 1800’s.

Large Scale Furniture-

Lots of smaller items can make a room feel even bigger. Using larger nightstands and big upholstered beds will help keep everything grounded. I had bought a new blue upholstered bed, but once wallpaper was up the bed took on a whole new look! I loved the contract of the headboard, the neutral color and texture brought in a lot of softness. Their bed is older but I found this similar one.
The Shephard art is a favorite. I love how he is illuminated from behind. I knew Dave Butler would love the spiritual meaning behind it.

A Sitting Spot-

A sitting area in your bedroom is a nice way to relax before bed — and a nice way to fill up a little extra space! I used this Green Rug to define the sitting area and break up space to make it feel cozy! They had a light above this space that felt out of place, by adding the rug and making the reading spot feel separate, we were able to keep the light, we just swapped it for a longer pendant light. The length helped bring the space down to make it intimate.
I knew Dave and Jenny would love this art. I have this in my home and so do my parents. Flocks by Night was inspired by Christmas, but the dark serene colors of the sheep grazing by moonlight is a favorite to keep up all year long! I love how an oversized piece of art can do wonders to a large empty wall!
I thrifted that round side table for $10, it was perfect to finish off the two chairs.
Stack of books, vase for fresh flowers, and a mini jar for a secret treat!
Behind the chairs, I did a gallery wall. Collected pieces from over the years. The only art that is new is the “Be Still“, I picked for them without knowing that is Dave’s favorite scripture. Dave had dried flower in a gold frame, it’s an Edelweiss that he climbed a rocky cliff to get for his wife! So sweet (and Jenny pointed out very dangerous and would have rather he didn’t take the risk, ha!)

Add Textures-

I love curtains, they always soften the look of a bedroom. We raised their existing curtain rod (I prefer to go high and wide!) a few inches and added curtains on the smaller windows. Adding these denim blue window curtains made the room feel finished!
I loved the simplicity of this woven jute rug. I did an 8×10, but could have done a 9×12, but the way the room is it would have been off centered, both are great sizes for a king bed, depending on the room size.

Plants-

And don’t forget plants, which warm a space immediately! A diffuser and quality essential oils will make your room smell so good and will support you with sleep. We have a diffuser hidden in that older Crate and Barrel lantern!
Dave and Jenny were so kind, it was so fun giving such a sweet couple a cozy bedroom makeover!
