Older Teen Boy Room- Plaid Wallpaper and Moody Paint Color with Shiplap Ceiling

My good friend Mike Bowen has been wanting to upgrade her son Liam’s room. Everything was white and just wasn’t feeling finished. Liam is a senior in High School and all around good kid! We really like Liam, and wanted to help Miko do something fun in his room…something that will last long after his teen years!

Teen Boy Bedroom-

The Bowens have a charming older home, with a lot of built in features I adore. Liam has built in closet and desk area, I couldn’t wait to paint it to stand out and style the desk.

And after! A masculine room to relax in! Painting the trim, doors and ceiling in **Tate Olive by Benjamin Moore** really completed the cozy look we wanted.

They had someone add shiplap to the ceiling. The shiplap is 5″ wide from Lowe’s. The supplies cost $500 and the person they hired charged $1000 for labor. It took the installer 1.5 days. Miko filled holes and ended for a day. And Kevin an hour to caulk so of the gaps. The first thing we did was paint the ceiling, trim and built in’s **Tate Olive by Benjamin Moore**. We did matte sheen on ceiling and satin sheen on trim and doors.

We wallpapered everything we didn’t paint! Miko found this small plaid wallpaper, and it is cute! In pictures just hard to see the pattern, looks like cream walls. But in person its a nice subtle plaid. I like this large plaid wallpaper too with a bigger pattern.

I found this dresser for $40 on Facebook marketplace. I always search items with the word “vintage”. Above is the Man in The Arena Quote. A jar filled with all Liams Kendama toy’s. And a white marble tray stacked with a plant, books and a small gold lamp that Miko was gifted, here is another lamp option.

My design plan had a black spindle bed (similar here)so we just decided to used the full size one Liam had! It was just too high, so we took off the box spring, made a big difference. I’m always most excited about making over beds! The new cozy bedding and earthy colors made such a fun and dramatic difference.

The big picture over the bed is of Liam’s dad skiing. Love finding art that has a meaning! We just printed it in matte, size at Office Depot. Then framed in this Poster Frame. These gold plug-in sconces next to the art added so much! We decided over the bed rather than next to the bed so he could have some light when reading!

Fluffy Bedding Favorites-

Mattress Pad– this mattress pad is cooling, a layer of comfort and protection
Sheet Set – started making the bed with these simple classic stripe sheet
Shams– simple block plaid design, opposite color of the duvet
Duvet Insert– my go-to duvet insert! I like that this duvet is organic, and very fluffy!
Duvet– I love patterns, this mini-check is fun and easy to use with other patterns!
Quilt–The quilt I used is out of stock, this one is similar
Sham Inserts– quality inserts make the bed! These are great for decorative pillows, and if you like a full fluffy pillow, you might like to sleep with too!
Euros shams–same color and pattern as the duvet.
Euro Sham inserts– I prefer really full, down filled inserts. These are a favorite.
I used a blanket (out of stock) for the ends of Liams bed in this plaid pattern. This is only a throw size though.

Stack of fluffy pillows he can sleep with or stack on his chair at night.

Rug I bought a while ago on sale HERE. I sized up from what they had an 8×10 to a 9×12, it fits the room almost exactly, I wanted the chair to be on the rug too. I didn’t get a photo, but we did have to cut out a hole for the floor vent, it looks like custom carpet, just stapled it to the floor.

Reading Nook-

We scored this leather chair on marketplace too! It was $100 and the perfect size for his window corner.

In between his chair and bed is a side table doubles as an accent table and nightstand. Liam loves to diffuse so we have a Haven diffuser and sleep oil, carafe for water, his scriptures, tic tac toe game (older) and a cute vase. Love this woven ottoman to finish the space off!

Desk-

I love styles opening shelves. I mainly used older items I had, shopped my home! You can too, use books, baskets, plants and fill picture frames with photos you love!

Across from the bed, on Liam’s big open wall we hung an oval Black Mirror, this Vintage Ski Jump Over Car art in this poster frame and mini landscape art Miko had.

This is Miko! I showed up matching her, which isn’t uncommon. These hats are the custom ones Kevin had made for my surprise party. Everyone loved the finished room, thanks to Miko for letting me help with this project!
