*I partnered with my friends at Trove Editions on this post- all opinions are my own.
I am back to discuss ways you *could* be making your home look cheap! I don’t think that any of us are trying to achieve that look. But if you have something in your home that could fall under todays post. That is OK! I am here to help and offer some EASY fixes. If you are happy with what you have, even better! I am also dying to show you a change I made to my front room, might seem like a small change but it is BIG to us. Basically Swivel Chairs are magical!
Remember I had that big white sideboard in this room? Well it sold and I was so thrilled because I had big plans of getting two swivel chairs in here. Swivel chairs are possibly one of the greatest style of chairs. I am surprised that I have not owned one before. Especially in a small space.
My new swivel chairs are from one of the coolest shops. I actually met the owners when I used to be a furniture buyer. It is called Trove Editions. I love their mission statement and it goes right along with what we are talking about today-
“We offer an ever-changing collection of rare and vibrant finds….
INTENDED TO INSPIRE AND ENERGIZE YOU
We encourage you to make it your own, mixing in new elements with the meaningful pieces you have acquired and inherited over time.”
Isn’t that great? Mix in meaningful pieces. I feel like that is MY mission statement! See why this fits in todays discussion-
Back to that article I found that was titled-
“5 Things That Make a Home Look Cheap”
I clicked over immediately to see if I had any of those things. One of the things said that could make your home look cheap- Furniture Sets. This is what they said-
“I know it’s easy to go into a big box store and purchase an entire bedroom set, you don’t enhance a home by doing so. Furniture created and sold in sets suffers from tremendous mark-ups, it rarely works well in the space that it is intended for. Mixing and matching styles, fabrics, and woods is a creative way to decorate on a budget and also tends to make a home look fabulous. If you forgo the ease of furniture sets and use a little creativity instead, you’re likely to wind up with furniture that you love that is infused with quality and class, and nothing is wrong with that!” source
What do you think of that statement? Do you agree?
One of the best tips design tips for starting to decorate a new space is- to find one starting point and go from there. Find the rug or the pillow then build off it, creating a look that is unique to YOU. Find a store that sells unique pieces and frequent it often until you find exactly what you love.
I think a lot of people like owning something that no one else has. (Not me, obviously I don’t mind if others have what I have, it’s a compliment).
These are some of my favorite unique pieces from Trove Editions that will add some character to your home. And break up a matching set of furniture.
Barstools /// Swivel Chair /// Coffee Table ///
You can shop their unique finds online. For most items on Trove Editions, once a piece is sold out, it is gone! For now they can get more of my chairs. (they ship throughout the US right to your door and they offer free returns from their online shop). Find my exact chairs HERE .
Also if you do happen to have a matching sofa and loveseat then try putting your loveseat in a different room and add chairs or something unique with your sofa!
I hope that helped, especially if you are in the market for something new, this is something to consider!
Also you can always shop this room HERE.

Great home decor advice! When I replace my living room furniture I will definitely get swivel/rocking chairs. That way you can face the tv, or turn your chairs when company is over which may be better for chatting etc.. We paid a LOT of money for our matchy leather living room set, and it’s extremely comfortable, so we won’t be replacing for a while even though we purchased 10 years ago. Lesson learned on paying too much because our taste does change every few years if you’re like me. 🙂
Yes! They are the best!
Exactly- matching sets can be way over priced for sure!
I love the changes you made!!! Silly, but my favorite is the hanging lamp in the window seat. And I love that you took that from another room and didn’t have to buy anything new. But now I’m the crazy reader that wants to know what’s over by your couch where the secretary used to be. I can’t help it-I just love your house!!! 🙂
Oh my gosh you are the BEST!!! You just made my day. I will show that tomorrow (I know you won’t be able to sleep tonight;) hahaha!) xoxoxo
well hello, I am crazy reader number two! I too noticed the lamp and wondered what was ‘living’ in the secretary desk’s spot! The room looks awesome. Just those few changes make it look so much roomier. Love it!
Hi Sharon!! I LOVE my crazy readers so much! It feels so much bigger and easier to get into things. Funny how we hang onto things.
I am in my 50’s do have had decades to refine my collection of eclectic furniture. My #1 peice of advice is: No more than one piece of furniture from Target in your home! I have the advantage of age on my side and I can tell you that no matter how good/stylish/”in” you think that Target piece is – it is NOT! In a few years it will begin to show its origin – either in wear or style. The only piece of Target furniture I have is a storage ottoman, that is very functional, but after 10 years is falling apart. I know that to many of your readers 10 years seems like a long time, but it is not! For me, Target belongs in dorms and first apartments – Quality furniture should last at least 2-3 lifetimes!
They are trendy pieces, but they are inexpensive so if you love it and use it for a couple years then it did it’s job!
Did you paint the wall clock? I want to know the trick to the trade on painting furniture. I have tried and it turns out a mess. I like all white furniture so I want to paint an oak wood TV stand, a pine bench/storage and two bar stools. Im afraid it will look cheap when I am done. PS Love your house!
Yes I did paint it:) it was distressed and too cream for my house.
I think the trick is to use a paint with a primer in it. Chalk paint is another really good way and easy way to paint over wood. I wrote a blog post about it here- http://nestingwithgrace.com/mudpaintandchalkpaint/
I love the big green plant! I’m guessing it’s real??? Where would I get one here in Utah?? LOve it all
Hi! Yes it is real- Fiddle fig. I have had for a month and watered only once- so easy!
Some people score them at Home Depot or for sure Cactus and Tropical would have one!
I love the new chairs and chest in your LR! Although I loved the big white buffet but it was always the first item that I noticed. Not only is the new chest in scale with the room but now you have room for the swivel chairs, which I hope are as comfortable as they are functional. I hope you show more pics of the room soon…it looks like it just draws you in!
Thanks Debbie! I am LOVING this space! I will share soon- still waiting on a few more things to finish it up!! The chairs are SO comfy.
Where is that clock from!? This is the second time I’ve seen it around, and I love it!
I linked it here- http://nestingwithgrace.com/shop-our-home/ and I painted mine bright white
Hi there 🙂 I am searching for a swivel glider for our nursery. Do the trove swivel chairs rock at all or just swivel? I love them!
Hi! They just swivel, not rock. I love them too!
