Vintage Typewriter Birthday Gift

We went to Utah for Christmas to celebrate with our family and friends. Then we went from there straight to Hawaii with my husbands side of the family. It was a Christmas gift from his Mom and her Husband. Unfortunantly my husband couldn’t go with us, it was a real bummer. He had to be in Florida for work. We had a hard time saying goodbye to him. His Mom helped me a lot with the girls and we were pretty distracted to be too homesick for him. My birthday was January 9th, we celebrated at a Lua at night and whale watching in the day. A pretty great way to spend a Birthday. When we got home last night my husband had my birthday gift waiting for me.

It was a vintage typewriter that he had found at a consignment shop and spray painted gold. I absolutely adore it. The main reason I love it so much is that his gifts always show how much he knows me. They show me that he put a lot of thought into them. I am never an after thought to him. I want to be more like him. He first went to Anthropolgie looking for a gift, he knows he can’t go wrong in my favorite store.

He saw vintage typewriters mixed in their gorgeous displays. He asked if they were for sale and of coarse they weren’t. Now the husband was on a mission, he looked online for one and most were about $300 minimum plus the shipping was pretty high.

Then he went somewhere he hadn’t been before without me, a consignment shop. Luckily the shop had just got some typewriters in and he snatched one up for $40. To me that shows it was meant to be! The owner of the store said that he can’t keep these type writers in. Being the nice guy my husband is he told him (after he had paid for mine) that he could probably charge a little more for them.

He got home and spray painted it in Rust-Oleum Gold Rush Metallic. He even touched up the light plates I had spray painted gold in our kitchen HERE. He said the type writer worked before he spray painted it, but really I just want to use it for decor. I don’t plan on typing letters on it. This is something that I hope my girls look forward to inheriting one day.

Our home is a collection of things we love.  I love that my husband feels the same way and wants to add to it too. When he got home from his trip to Florida and we weren’t there yet he said “it just feels like you.” I listened to a Pod cast on one of our flights about design it said “Our emphasis on design effects our life, our environment and our play.” I totally agree with that.
