5 Year Old Boys Room with Plaid Wallpaper & Puppy Posters

This week we gifted a bedroom makeover to our 5 year old nephew, Porter. We recently gave his younger sister, Evie a bedroom makeover after graduating from her crib. Oh, and let’s not forget their parents bedroom! So we couldn’t leave Porter without a bedroom refresh. And his bedroom turned out so good!!! Porter loves dogs and camping. We had found dog wallpaper that was really cute, but I was worried it would be too much of a theme, so we went with plaid wallpaper and accented with all the things he loves. We started with installing board and batten, then the room took off from there!

Bedroom Before-

Boys love the idea of a bunkbed. Why is that? Are they imagining fun sleepovers? Or, just a place to climb? What little boys don’t know…bunkbeds are the hardest of beds to make and keep tidy! After chatting with Porter and his mom, everyone was perfectly fine with moving to a bigger size bed that will last longer. Porter doesn’t share the room with any siblings so the bed wasn’t functional either. They haven’t lived here long so Porters room was simple and clean. I was excited to add his personality to the room!

Bedroom After-

So much color and personality! Porter was so happy. His favorite was the cork board we found thrifting for $5. Ha! I love that he was excited to add his own art to it and really make his room his own. Then, he said how much he loved his bed! It does look so cozy and inviting. All the bedding is from The Company Store.

Bed and Bedding-

For the bed, we wanted to upgrade to something he could easily grown into. Porter is tall and I don’t think thats going to change as he grows, he will love the extra space! I found this Metal Bed, we got him a full size, it’s nice and sturdy!

That Giant Dachshund Dog Plush Pillow is so cute!!! My sister in law found that, and it finished off the room! There are several different pup options HERE. The puffy marshmallow pillow pulled in the rug and firefly art!

The Company Store, a favorite source for bedding! Let’s break it all down-

+Mattress Pad– this is cooling and added extra padding to their mattress…a must!
+Fitted Linen Sheet and Flat Linen sheet– lightweight and breathable, these linen sheets get softer with each wash. On a twin bed I just do the fitted sheet, no top. + Linen Pillowcase with Standard pillow insert
+Quilt– surprisingly not heavy, lightweight warmth, adds amazing texture to the bedding look.
+ Duvet with this duvet insert– that duvet insert is my go-to a must for a fluffy bed!
+Linen Euro Sham with Euro Sham Firm Insert–
+ Linen Pillowcase with Standard pillow insert
+Linen Standard Sham with Standard pillow insert– +Cotton Blanket– this textured woven blanket adds some dimension to the bedding, I always like to have a throw or blanket at the end of the bed.

Linen is my favorite for bedding, I personally love the wrinkled, relaxed look!

Board and Batten and Wall Color-

I have a full tutorial here on board and batten. We did Porter’s boards 5’5″ high and 16″ apart. It’s really quit simple, and adds a lot of character/custom look without spending a lot. We usually just add batten (the small boards/trim work) on the walls, we do not put the board on the wall. Unless your walls are heavily textured (my sister did it on a wall with a little texture) or the walls are damaged, otherwise we suggest skipping that step. Saves us time and money!

We painted all the board and batten Downing Slate from Sherwin Williams in matte/flat finish.

Plaid Wallpaper-

Isn’t this Plaid Wallpaper so so cute?! It has such a classic look, they can easily change up art and accesories around the room as he grows and always keep this wallpaper. I had originally found this wallpaper that I loved, it has cute mountain forest designs on it. I was drawn to it because he loves camping so much. But, it was much more expensive and I didn’t want his room to be stuck with a theme. So happy I went with this plaid!

Camp Stools-

Not necessarily “Camp Stools” but they remind me of them! I wanted to pull in some brown accents and finish off the bed, these stools did the trick!

Art and Dog Posters-

This Firefly Art from Lindsey Letters caught my eye. We saw fireflies all the time when we lived in Connecticut. Not very common to see fireflies in Utah cities. Reminds me of calm summer nights. (I did 30×24)

After I hung the firefly art centered with the board and batten and the bed, I made a dog gallery wall around it. Porter loves dogs! I found this Dog Art and framed them in these frames. I also like these frames.So fun, the fun colors helped to make the room juvenile, perfect for a sweet, dog loving 5 year old!

Rug-

I found this Green Rug from The Company Store. I wanted to mix in a different color and pull in the firefly’s in the art! We did use a screwdriver and screw each corner down into the carpet so it stayed in place.

Nightstands and Lamps-

I went with two black Nightstands on either side of his full bed. Brought in color with these Lantern Electric Lamps, they are SO cute!!! I loved that they have a dimmer switch too.

That puppy diffuser was made for this room!!!! You can tap his tongue and his nose changes colors, becomes a night light. A diffuser is always a must-have for any room I decorate, sleep support, calming and wellness. Find the puppy diffuser and others HERE.

Schoolhouse Light Fixture-

Kevin commented, “changing the world one boob light at a time”. I don’t like them, it’s not personal. Sorry boob light lovers! Found this Schoolhouse Light and knew the white and black accents would look nice paired with the wallpaper. The scale is big, very nice!

Window Treatments-

We rehung the curtains that were previously in the room. Just hung them higher. There was plenty of space above the window to raise the rod higher, and you want the curtains to barely touch the ground. You would hem if they are too long or see if you can raise the curtain rod. The sun comes up on the window side of the room, they had already hung a blackout shade and this bamboo one. I like the texture the blackout shade added, doesn’t block out too much light.

Chair-

I shopped my sister in laws home. I knew she would have a chair or something I could fill in that corner space. Found this cute Sherpa chair (less expensive option) not being used in a corner in her basement, her mom had recently given her. Perfect addition, sherpa for a camping room and the white to bring the white down from the wallpaper.

Bulletin Board for Art and Projects-

Porters favorite item. I love how big it is, taller than him! Nice to have a place to hang posters, art and fun little random things kids collect. Even better is all those things have a place and not taped to the walls! I found ours thrifting but found one similar here with lots of different size options.

Porter didn’t have a dresser in his room before, because his closet he has plenty of space for all his clothes!
